Don't let machines rule your mind- Sheikha Jawaher
[By Eman Al Baik -Sharjah, October 10 2002, Gulfnews ]

Technology and technical knowledge must be used to foster youngsters' love of history, heritage and a sense of belonging, Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, stressed yesterday.

She was speaking at the Sharjah Women's College during a ceremony to honour 30 new members of the Rumaysa Society.

She called on the country's daughters to be committed to the UAE's values while acquiring modern knowledge and being open to other civilizations.

"Technological knowledge must be used to let others know the Arab nation is the cradle of civilization and knowledge. Technology should be used in a sound manner in the service of the community, religion and Arab heritage," she said.

She urged UAE women not to permit technology to steer them in a direction contrary to society's values.

"Do not allow the machine to rule your minds lest it enslaves your time and makes you forget your obligations to God, family and community. Beware of attempts to make women a tool for those whose minds and hearts are troubled, and whose will is feeble. Be strong, proud of yourself and convinced of the path that rests on Islamic principles," she urged the students.

"Similarly, Dr Sheikh Sultan has recently appointed two women – distinguished by their contributions and service in the economic and social spheres – to the Executive Council, thus confirming his confidence in women and the value of their role in the development of the community," she added.

Dr Farid Ohan, Director of the College, said in his speech read on his behalf by Sheikha Amal Al Qasimi, Head of Public Relations, that the honouring ceremony of the second inductees for the Rumaysa Society is aimed at producing for society a great example of their namesake and determined supporters.

"The society has been named after a great woman of Islam, Rumaysa bint Milhan, who is known for her faith, courage, fortitude, personal integrity, leadership and excellence," he said.

The Rumaysa Society of Sharjah Women's College was established to recognise and honour students who have demonstrated superior academic performance, outstanding personal integrity, excellent conduct and great potential for leadership.
