Mental Illness

I am just so worried about our Ummah.

Tonight I got a call from a Muslimah whoes daughter just had a severe breakdown.

What is freaky is that in the past two months, I have received the same call from three other Muslims. These four are severe enough to be hospitalized.

Is there something in the water? Four Muslims in our tiny community is alot!
How is everyone else's community doing?

I think it's understandable why some Muslims may be a bit edgy. Alot has happened recently. There is alot of pressure on us especially young Muslim women. Is there a support group for Muslims out there? Like a 800 # to call if someone wishes to remain anonymous. If not, someone with counseling skills should start one. It's greatly needed I think.

I can't really speak on behalf of my muslim community (cos there's a lot of muslim peeps here!) but I remember at uni, quite a few ppl were dropping out for reasons of depression and stress.  i think it's to do with pressure from work, studying, personal life, ambition etc.  I read somewhere about 20 somethings having a kind of 'mid life crisis' bcos jobs arent for life anymore, things are more uncertain than they used to be and such like which i can certainly vouch for!

stress and pressure affects ppl in different ways and sometimes it can be overwhelming.  it's how you react to stress that makes or breaks you.  I would think that support from family and friends is needed to help more vulnerable peeps thru any stressful times.  Talking about stress is the best thing to do so you dont have to carry it all on your shoulders.

i tend to agree that the anti-muslim and muslimphobes are a big reason why muslims are hurt now.

I enjoyed reading this dialogue with the Dr. Yusuf  Progler about the Mental Illness in the Modern World: The Cultural Connections:

I'm not too sure about that, I mean I can understand it being a reason for distress, but not for a mental/nervous breakdown.

Something thats been in the news alot (hereabouts anyways) is the increasing number of people that are being diagnosed as depressed. I don't think its something exclusive to the Muslim community, it seems to be a trend encompassing pretty much all of society. Kathy, there was an article in the October 21st issue of Macleans (its a Canadian magazine), it profiled a young woman with the name of Sarah Hamid and her case/situation and how it was just one of many similar instances. Let me know if you can't get ahold of a copy and i'll see if i can photocopy/scan it for you.

There's a lot of pressure, stress and uncertainty out there, and I can totally relate to that suffocating anxiety, like Nafisa said there's different ways of dealing with it, and ultimately its how you react to it that will set your course for you. But its hard, especially if you have tendency to keep things to yourself, internalizing your fears and uncertainty, which it seems is exactly what most girls/young women end up doing.

You have to be on the lookout, always aware of whats happening around you, letting people know they can count on you,  I dont know what else to say.

It Dont Matter, I dont know of any support groups, but I do know most major centers have some sort of set up that offers islamic counselling, its best to get in touch with your islamic centre and find out what they have to offer, and if they can't help maybe they can direct you to someplace that can. I know Sr.Shahina Siddique offers counselling, she's an amazing lady, she's based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, she's the first person that came to mind when 'counselling' was mentioned. I don't have her contact information, but you could probably get it through CAIR-Canada.
