So men, how do you stay in shape?  Gym, running, swimming, martial arts, or something else?

If anyone needs any help getting in shape and being more healthy, I can help out.

If anyone has any workout or health advice for men, don't be afraid to post it here.

Of course I realize this will probably not get any replies due to the fact that all of us are in perfect shape already.  Heh.

Brothers, staying healthy is simple.  Just eat right and play a sport that requires a lot of running and moving.

Sports such as:

basketball
soccer
tennis
track/running
etc.

Swimming is another great way to stay fit.

Two meals a day with very little junk food along with a regular sport will go a long way to keep you fit and in shape.

Good luck :)

So do you move a lot when your good or bad or do you get often dribbled Bro ???

For me its martial arts, Ju Jitsu and Kickboxing really keeps me in shape. Two times a week and I've improved a lot. Insha-allah after Ramzan I'll be doing a lot more, I hope even to have some sort of daily blogger on my training.

Anyway, has anyone got any recipies for healthy smoothies ...???

Two meals a day?  No way, man.  Break your meals up into smaller portions and spread it out over five meals.  That way you maintain a high metabolism.

For smoothies...hmm.  The fun in finding good smoothies is experimenting.  A good base is a scoop or two of whey protein.  Add some juice, ice, and a banana and it should be good.....should be.

Let me be the first to actually ask a question here ;)

Here's my situation: I'm trying to lose some excess baggage around the waist area (aren't we all?) while trying to put on muscle mass. So I do weight training as well as aerobic exercise (usually the elliptical runner or the treadmill). My main question is regarding nutrition: If I eat less to lose fat, I won't put on muscle mass; Conversely, if I eat too much, it'll render my sweating on the treadmill useless. Do I need to strike a balance or should I not worry about eating less? What should I eat more of? Do you guys recommend any protein-supplements?

For Brother BroHanif: How often do you have ju-jitsu classes? Does it burn off enough calories to substitute for an aerobic workout? I'm thinking of starting Taekwando classes here after work, but only if it gives me a good enough aerobic workout.

Also what would you guys say is the most important part of your weight traning (if you do that)? Bench press? Chin-ups/dips?

JAK in advance.

Assalamu 'alaikum,

Bro Hanif, ur signature says "1 mile in 8.20 seconds". How is that possible? Maurice Greene is the fastest runner todate and he did 100 metres in 9.79 seconds (and 1 mile=1600 metres). Am I missing something?:). Check this out: www.mogreene.com

Actually, Tim Montgomery is the fastest person in the world right now (9.78 at the IAAF Grand Prix Final). However, with the timing differing in the hundreth of a second, it's all the same to me!

Bro Zahid,

First thing is first.  I need to know your age, height, and weight (If you are uncomfortable with this information being public, just pm me).

Second, you will need to take an initial measurement of your body.  People tend to focus on weight a bit too much.  So, what you need to do is measure your waist, chest, arms, thighs, calves, and neck.  I don't need these measurements.  They will be just for you to record your progress.

You will also need to measure your body fat percentage.  This is a great indicator of progress.  You may need to consult a physician or experienced personal trainer for this measurement.  Although there are home measurement kits, I think it best to find someone experienced in this procedure.  Also, when you measure your body fat percentage in the future, make sure to use the same person and/or method as in the initial measurement.  Comparing BFP results from two different methods can end up in skewed results.

Once I have your height, weight, and age, we can move on to diet and training programs.

Don't I wish! I can do a mile in less than 8minutes 20 seconds. Although nowadays I haven't timed myself, I think I'm much closer to 7mins.
How often do you have ju-jitsu classes? Does it burn off enough calories to substitute for an aerobic workout? I'm thinking of starting Taekwando classes here after work, but only if it gives me a good enough aerobic workout.
My routine is as follows:
I do Kodokan Kickboxing on Tuesdays.
Followed by Ju Jitsu and Group Fighting on Wednesday
Saturday sometimes another session of Ground Fighting

However, when I'm at the class I also sparr(fight) as well. The first 30 seconds are no problem, however, if you try and fight for 3 minutes or so you have a splendid work out.
Really, take my word for it I can run on the treadmill for 20 minutes or even an hour, however, after years of going to the gym there wasn't much improvement.
So I decided to do something else initally I started boxing and from there I realised how fit you need to be in order to fight for a couple of minutes.
I first started with TaeKwondo and boxing yet I thought I'm missing something, so I later tried Ju Jitsu and it really appeals to me.
As you ground fight, kick, punch, throw and use a multitude of defence and attack techniques you soon see the benefits of training hard. As long as you can have a bout with someone apart from the boxing bag them whatever form you take on whether you like fighting standing up or on the floor I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Train Hard, Fight Easy.

If you want any further info please let me know.

Does anyone here play Badminton? Here in the states it seems like the Americans either have no clue what it is or consider it a sissy sport. Back in High School a lot of the Koreans used to play it.

I used to play it when i was a wee kid back in Scotland then started again in high school, but after I graduated I couldn't find anyone that plays it.

Badminton in America is primarily a recreational/barbecue sport.  Usually accompanied with croquet and horseshoes.   I know you can find badminton clubs in many areas.  Maybe a search on the web for a local area club can put you in contact with some people who share your interest.

Just wanted to give a tip to bro. Zahid...if you drink any type of soft drink, don't anymore. I've noticed that soda really adds on the weight - even if it's diet. I'm sure you'll notice the difference.

Oh and I've played badminton. It's a nice game :)

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

My and my brother used to play regularly a few years back. Definately helps keeping you fit especially if you play a tough game of singles.

Ideal for the UK because you have to play badminton indoors ;-)

I think I'll be out of action for a while so I won't be able to respond on the board.  I should still have access to email for those who have it.

Kick boxing! thats how I do it. I take classes at the local masjid, offered by a convert. Boy is it tough. We have to avoid punching to the head though, and at the end of the class I get sore all over.
That was at the beginning though, and right now it is actually quite easy.

Ramadan mubarak all...

Easy, eat less, exercise more i.e. running once a week until you are sweating and swimming twice a week until you are out of breath, to tone the body try different variations of pull ups, push ups and sit ups all twice a week.

If this can be done in a group or class then all the better. Also nafl fasts mondays and thursdays.

Make sure the right technique is used which avoids injury and remember the training has to be hard work to get the maximum benefit.

It works for me very well alhamdulillah.

And don't forget the most important thing, discipline.  :)
