Where's the place to be?

So this weekend I went to a family medicine conference in cleveland and they had a residency fair w/ residencies from ohio, PA, and the east coast mostly and it got me thinking about where I want to do my training. I think the biggest thing is that if i go away from home, i'd want to go to a place w/ a wonderful muslim population (not a bad way to meet someone too, eh?  ;))

Sooo, does anyone want to represent their hometown and tell me where i should spend 3 years of my life?

thanks!

p.s. i thought of the albany crew this weekend b/c the medschool in albany had like 20 students there :)

If you can manage to get a "Kebab King" with you  sis then Albany aint a bad place  :-/ .Jokes apart 'heard' that Albany Med is a decent place to do a residency.

slm,

I recently moved to the D.C area, and sniper madness aside, this place is actually quite nice, Alhamdulillah.  We have the most AMAZING muslim community here in northern virginia--the ADAMS center, and Alhamdulillah we just built a beautiful new mosque which is officially opening next week Insha'Allah!!!     And we have a lot of good places for residency up here..including some great universities.

Here, I'll break it down with the pros and cons..

Pros:

-GREAT Muslim communities (in Northern Virginia, D.C and maryland)
-Great schools and residency programs
-Convenient location---easy access to other cool cities--NYC, philly, etc
-Three  big airports--making it convenient to travel
-Cool things to see, museums, capitol, etc
-GREAT restaurants, and LOTS of halal options (kabob joints on every corner!)
-You will guaranteed see other Muslims every time you leave your home

Cons:

Expensive! :(
I heard baltimore is slightly less expensive, but probably not by much.

The further you get away from D.C the cheaper it gets..

Thats it!

Walaikum assalam,
Nazia

From what I've heard, most people in residency spend most of those years in the actual hospital and not in whatever town they're in, so maybe it doesn't really matter where you live. ;)

The best place I think would be one where as you said has a good muslim community, but not just in the city or town but within the hospital you will be working at since you'll be there a lot.

Take Houston for example. Not only are there lots of Muslims around (some might say too many :) ) but there is a good community of Muslims working in the hospitals there. I once met a brother during Ramadan there from Rice University which is across from the Texas Medical Center and he took me to one of the hospitals there and they actually had a masjid inside the hospital! Not like a room, but an actual masjid with all the fittings. There were like a hundred people there for Maghrib and they had a big Iftar afterwards. And most of those people were working there.

To have a supportive community like that within the institution you're working at is definitely a big help considering the amount of hours you'll be spending there I would imagine.

thanks for those who responded. ah yes, i do LOVE cleveland, hehe, but those winters that drag on forever.....i was thinkin it would be nice to be somewhere warm for a few years. but it would be reallly nice to be close to home and the wonderful muslim community here.

that's really cool when hospitals actually have a mini masjid inside their hospital. Cleveland Clinic has one too, which was super nice the summer i worked there. it was mostly brothers who prayed there.

although nazia's review of the dc area makes it hard to resist! There was a program in Baltimore somewhere that sounded pretty decent, i think the hospital was called something like Quaker Square?? hehe it sounds more like a shopping plaza to me  :-*  How is the cost of living in Baltimore? like how much would a one bedroom apt go for?

i've never been to texas...but it is warm there, so that's a plus! (can you tell how much i love living in the snowbelt? ;))
