'Two arrests' in sniper hunt

The sniper killings have sparked a massive search

Police have shut down a major highway north west of Washington DC amid reports that two arrests have been made in connection with the hunt for the sniper.
No details have yet been confirmed about arrests or the closure of a stretch of the Interstate 70, a highway close to Middletown, Maryland, about 50 miles (80 kilometres) from Washington DC.

Police told reporters they were planning to hold a news conference on Thursday morning local time.

The reported arrests come after US authorities issued an arrest warrant for two men wanted for questioning in connection with the sniper attacks, which have killed 10 people in the Washington DC area.

Police said they were looking for John Allen Mohammed, also known as John Allen Williams, and his stepson. Officers said they were both armed and dangerous.

John Allen Mohammed is said to be armed and dangerous

It is believed the men may have information about the sniper attacks, but Police Chief Charles Moose warned "not to assume they were involved in the shootings".

Chief Moose also issued another direct message to the sniper during a news conference.

Yard searched

Earlier, FBI agents conducted a major search at a house in Tacoma, Washington state, which is 3,200 kilometres (2,000 miles) from the capital.

Mr Mohammed is believed to have served in the army at a base near Tacoma and to have lived in the house.

Fort Lewis, to the south of the town, provides some of the most intensive sniper training in the US military, correspondents say.

Let's talk directly - We have an answer for you about your option

Message from police
Local television has shown FBI agents and other officers searching the yard of a house in Tacoma with metal detectors and chainsaws, combing the soil and a large tree stump in an apparent search for bullets and metal fragments.

"It looks like an archaeological dig there with tapes running the full length of the yard," one resident said.

A spokesman for Fort Lewis base could not confirm if Mr Mohammed had lived at the address.

: Trail of terror

In another development, police are investigating a possible link between the sniper and a killing in Montgomery, Alabama, according to the news agency AFP.

A 52-year-old woman was shot and killed outside a liquor store there on 21 September. Another woman was wounded.

Folk tale clue

At the press conference late on Wednesday, Chief Moose delivered a cryptic message.

"You asked us to say, 'We have caught the sniper like a duck in a noose'. We understand that hearing us say this is important to you. However we want you to know how difficult it has been to understand what you want."

Chief Moose: another direct appeal to killer

The reference to a duck and noose apparently comes from a folk tale, in which a rabbit attempts to catch a duck in a noose but ends up thwarted by the duck, according to the Washington Post.

"Let's talk directly," the police chief continued.

"We have an answer for you about your option. We are waiting for you to contact us."

That may refer to the snipers' demands for $10m apparently left in a note at the scene of one of the shootings.

Since 2 October, 10 people have been killed and three others wounded in Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC in apparently random attacks.

'No expense spared'

The US Government has agreed to give $600,000 to schools in the area to strengthen security.

President George W Bush said local police would have "the full resources of the federal government" to help catch the killer.

"There is a ruthless person on the loose. We pray for a quick end to this period of violence and fear," he said.

Police confirmed on Wednesday that 35-year-old bus driver Conrad Johnson, shot on Tuesday morning, was the sniper's latest victim.

In their appeal for witnesses, police have stressed that any immigrants should not hold back information for fear of police investigating their status.

Chief Moose has offered to set up a private post office box "or another secure method" for the sniper to contact police.

...this

Assalamua Alaikum.

I think its good that they caught the sniper, if it truly is this man, but I think as an African American Muslim, this is a bad thing, for us especially.  Things have already been a little tense since last year with America and its Muslim population.  This only makes things that much more tense.  It only  puts more fear and paranoia in the hearts of the kaafirs.   Its really sad, but not great.

"Bad" is an understatement.  I could think of about 50 horrible phrases I would like to say right now.  But I won't.  May Allah help me remain polite and civil.

Funny how as soon as they had to refrain from referring to Muslims who cause trouble as "Muslim Terrorists", along comes a man causing trouble who's name is "Mohammad."  (Undisputably a Muslim name.)

I don't know how to express my anger in an articulate fashion, so I'll just stop right now.

Wasalaam.

Gun in suspects' car 'matches sniper's'

The car has now been towed off for further tests

Ballistics tests have matched a rifle found in the car of two men arrested in connection with the Washington sniper attacks with the weapon used in the killings, according to a report from the US.
The hunt for the sniper who terrorised the US capital and its suburbs now appears to be over after the arrest of the two men found sleeping in a car.

The two men have appeared in court - one of them, former soldier John Allen Muhammad, was charged on firearms violations.

The state attorney in Maryland's Montgomery County, Douglas Gansler, told a radio station: "There is a strong feeling these people are related to the sniper shootings."

Asked if he believed the sniper was still at large, he said: "No".

Later, the Associated Press news agency quoted a unnamed law enforcement official as saying a rifle found in the car with Mr Muhammad matched that used for the 13 shootings blamed on the sniper.

Former soldier

Federal officials said the firearms offence charge was a way to detain Mr Muhammad while more evidence was sought in the sniper case.

John Allen Muhammad, 41, and his stepson John Malvo, 17, are African-American in origin.

John Allen Muhammad was an "expert marksman"

Mr Muhammad is an "expert" rifle marksmen who served in the army for 10 years, according to the US Department of Defense. He was deployed during the Gulf War.

He is also known to be a convert to Islam.

The arrests came only hours after a nationwide hunt was launched for the two men.

Officers are thought to have been pursuing leads in Alabama when the news broke.

The police are investigating a possible link between the men and a robbery at an Alabama liquor store, in which one woman member of staff was shot dead.

Reports suggest that a fingerprint of one of the two arrested men had been found at the scene.

'Case solved'

The state attorney for Montgomery County and the US attorney for Maryland are scheduled to meet on Friday to discuss filing criminal charges.

A senior official in President George W Bush's administration is reported to have said that the FBI was "reasonably sure" the case had been solved.

: Trail of terror

Correspondents say the day's events could be the major breakthrough in the case and could provide great relief to the people of the Washington area.

The men were found sleeping in their car

Warrants were issued for the two men on Wednesday.

Then early on Thursday, police converged on their vehicle - a blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice - on Interstate 70 in Frederick County, about 70 kilometres (40 miles) north-west of the US capital.

"Shortly after 0330 this morning, a tactical response team arrested two individuals from that vehicle who were sleeping in the vehicle, who were taken into custody without incident," said Major Greg Shipley, a Maryland state police spokesman.

The Washington Post, citing police sources, say investigators found a hole carved in the car which would enable somebody to lie in the back and shoot without being seen.

House search

Earlier, FBI agents conducted a major search at a house in Tacoma, Washington state, 3,200 kilometres (2,000 miles) from the capital.

Mr Muhammad is believed to have served in the army at a base near Tacoma and to have lived in the house.

Fort Lewis, south of the town, provides some of the most intensive sniper training in the US military, correspondents say.

On Wednesday, FBI agents spent hours at the Tacoma home, eventually carting away a tree stump from the yard and other potential evidence.

The stump may have been used for target practice, and law enforcement sources said they believed it might contain bullets or fragments.

My sentiments exactly.

I had a feeling it would turn out this way, every time there was a shooting CNN and MSNBC were tripping over themselves speculating about "possible link to al-qaeda" and I as soon as I saw the name Muhammad I knew they had got their wish.  Although they are reporting that he was/is a member of the NOI, average joe american doesn't know or care about the difference, because Muslim= terrorist.

Now u will see in all the reports "convert to Islam" feature prominently.  Not "convert to the Nation of Islam sect"

May Allah have mercy on Muslims in America during the sacred month, it's gonna get ugly.

I am not surprised.  Infact, expected it.  It is typical of American media and American perception of Islam.  Possible link to Al-Qeada?  Oh please!!!
