Asalaamu Alaikum ;-) Just to give you some background to this, the President of the Halal Food Authority (HFA) came to our Masjid just over a year ago. At the time, he said Tesco wanted to run a range of Halal meat but he didn't want to give them the go ahead because he was worried about the impact on Muslim businesses. But he did say that unless those Muslim butchers, who currently sell Halal meat but know full well it isn't Halal, got their act together, he would give the go ahead for the supermarkets to start selling it. It appears that time has come.
SAFEWAY LAUNCH HALAL RANGE [17/10/02] Safeway has become the first supermarket in Britain to offer customers a full range of Halal meats, including lamb. The Safeway own-brand range comprises seven lines each of lamb and chicken and carries the approval of the Halal Food Authority. Customers can choose from a selection of products including chicken pie, chicken breasts, thighs and legs, drumsticks and wings, legs of lamb, mince and chops among others. The range has been developed by Afzal Siddiqui, a fresh meat expert at Safeway, who is the country’s first Muslim supermarket buyer of Halal meat. Safeway approached the Halal Food Authority early in the development of the project and together have developed a policy to ensure that the range adheres strictly to Halal rules laid down for the preparation, delivery into store, display and sale of Halal foods. The policy includes the use of an HFA-approved slaughterhouse and packaging plant. Masood Khawaja, President of the Halal Food Authority comments: “Muslim customers of Safeway, for some time were longing for Halal authenticated and verified lamb, meat and poultry. The Halal Food Authority is proud to endorse these products, which are fully audited with documented traceability from, slaughterhouse to the store. "Whilst shopping for their halal meat and poultry ay Safeway, customers will purchase with confidence, enjoying added assurance of quality, pricing and presentation.” Mike Ware, Category Manager, Fresh Meat, said: “This is an important development for Safeway and we are very proud to be offering an own-brand Halal range to our customers. We are delighted to have worked closely with the Halal Food Authority throughout the project.” The range was officially launched at Safeway in Stratford, London on Tuesday 8th October 2002. For more information about the range or the launch please call Lynsey Sizer at the Safeway Press Office on 020 8756 2767. LAUNCH OF HALAL MEAT AND POULTRY IN SAFEWAY STORES Supermarket chain Safeway plc took the initiative and introduced authenticated halal meat and poultry and launched it from their flagship store in Stratford, East London. There are nearly twenty stores up and down the country that would initially serve the Muslim customers. The launch was on 8th of October, with a slogan Hello to Halal, in the presence of members of the trade and other dignitaries. The Halal Food Authority is endorsing and auditing meat and poultry from slaughterhouse to portioning plant to the participating store, with full authenticity of halal and traceability assurance from Safeways for all their labelled products that carry HFA logo. In other words slaughterhouses are separately endorsed for halal slaughter, portioning plants are endorsed for portioning and packaging. All establishments are audited and inspected by the HFA contractually for validity and compliance of Shari`ah rules together with halal and relevant rules of meat hygiene and HACCP in vogue. As Mr Masood Khawaja, president of the HFA said at the launch, “ the endorsement and halal approval is from slaughterhouse to the store”. Safeway have been given special instructions and guidelines for how to handle this unique pre-packed meat and poultry at all stations, how to display and orientate staff for segregation from non-halal meat and poultry. All providers would be monitored in line of term of procedures and compliance. Muslim customers are invited by the Safeway for suggestions to enable them to improve product line, cuts of products and size and weight of packaging. 11th October 2002 http://www.halalfoodauthority.co.uk/front.html |
