This is what I do. In the dining room windows i put cutouts of all the different phazes of the moon.

From the ceiling I hang a crescent and about a hundred stars.

In the corner we build a cave- for Lalaytl Qadr.

On the wall I hang posters about Ramadan and fasting.

I also made a large "quilt" with 30 pockets. It is numbered both in arabic and ?english. I put a small inexpensive treat in each pocket so Ali can open one at break fast. In one pocket i put a couple extra toys for unexpected children.

On the kitchen table I put placards with the arabic/english of duas o be said.

I also hang tiny little fanooses in the living room. Also in the chair I bring out my puppet Abdullah for the whole month.

Last year I made a door hanging that said Ramadan Mubarak and Insha Allah this year i want to cut out a siloutte of a masjid from plywood and drill holes in it to place lighting.... to explain taraweeh prayers.

now if i could only borrow your talents for decoration for work! :) i'm looking for stuff to hang on the outer walls of my cubicle as well as stuff to put inside the cubicle itself.

i love fawaanees! but where can i get them? they were the first thing that came to my mind but i didn't think i could get them short of ordering some from egypt!  it'd be nice to have a chain of little fawaaniis alternated with stars and crescents.

i'm also looking for some *good* posters about ramadan...in english!

keep the ideas coming insh'Allah :)

The door is open!

The fanooses lights i got at TJ Max last year in there x-mas clearance section. My table fanoose was also a TJ Max find.

One of the posters I got at a Teachers supply store- the rest we made.

On the serious side... when you have kids- ya gotta make it exciting and a learning opportunity for them.

We also make little duffs from oatmeal boxes and those foam felts.

We did!! It is called the Islamic Awareness Center! Keep us in mind for sadaqa /zakat. A brother gave us an apartment and pays the heating and electricity.

In it we have a prayer room, office, 2 classrooms and a reading room! Subhanah Allah, it is a dream of mine come true! So far we have had a mini Hajj- in forms and had many people and Muslims come thru. We decorate the local museums and malls for Ramadan, as well as do many speaking engagements at schools and churches. We are involved in inter faith groups as well as prison groups.

Mashallah, those are some really cool ideas sister Kathy! and congrats on the new center you've opened, May Allah reward you for all your efforts :)

I've been thinking about doing a little Ramadan poster on our bulletin board space at school for our Islamic Medical Association group on campus, so inshallah maybe i can incorporate some of these ideas. And maybe use them at our place too! i don't have muslim roomies this year unfortunately, so some decorations will help to make it "feel" more like Ramadan. they are super supportive though mashallah, and want to fast w/ me at least one of the days during ramadan inshallah :)

I want to make a semi-real cave this year. Any ideas on how to build one? Plaster of paris? But a cheap alternative? I heard something about Chicken wire.

Ali's is made of cardboard boxes and paper bags- sounds weird- but it looks cool!

This is sooooo cool masha'Allah. Here is a couple ideas which i hope you will like:

-decorate nicely the coffee tin box and slit the top and make it hte donation box for the masjid (or dawah center? :)

-Inside the Dawah center make a khayma/tent with different ramadan activities for children, that way you get the parents coming and make sure enough volunteers are there to do dawah to them.It can be used at other times for the university students iftar invitation. or the singles, etc.

-make a paper crown and buy fake jewels/shiny star stickers/or the shiny beeds. For each day the child fasts you add one to the crown which they can sport of Eid. If they are too young you do it by the hours or by the good deeds and listening well and cleaning and praying and things like that.

-some ideas for making the million stars: making them from popsicle sticks glued together then sprinkle the glitter, aluminum foil, cardboard box 3D one for the table, the plastic plates (these ones are good to write one resolution you would like to change in ramadan or increase in a certain Ibada, they have a special place around the hilal. or the dua you say when you eat at someones or at iftar, etc). you can make a bunch from construction paper all folded and make a string of stars.

Some examples of stars are here:
http://byroads.com/magazine/arts/stars.html
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/stars/

How do you make the paper fanoos???? there are ones with slits vertical but they don't really look like fanoos. is there a site or a certain way you do yours?

how did you make the cave at the end? THAT is sooo cool masha'Allah. do you read the Quran in there during Ramadan?
