HER Highness Shaikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Supreme Family Council and wife of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, on Thursday evening opened the first session of the sixth Sharjah Children's Consultative Council at the Sharjah Ruler's Court.

Shaikha Jawaher called on all families in Sharjah to enrol their children in the activities of the Sharjah Children and Youth Centres.

She said Dr Shaikh Sultan founded these centres to serve as cultural and educational platforms to nurture strong and independent young men and women. "We celebrate the future we share with our children today at the children's council. This session's slogan "together we will build the future" affirms that those who will build the future are ready and willing to take up their responsibilities and carry on.

"I am so pleased to be here among a group of children who are voicing their opinions and views in front of experts and decision makers. They have taken up this year's theme as standard towards constructive dialogue to find the best possible means to serve their community," Shaikha Jawaher said.

She stressed the need to examine the hopes and aspirations of the children, as expressed at the opening session by the children with confident voices and a clear sense of awareness. Shaikha Jawaher said the children seek out a future role that is an integral part of a journey which began with their mothers, their fathers and teachers, as well as all those who have had a hand in raising, nurturing and preparing them for the role expected of them, towards meeting the expectations of their generation. "Dear children, there are numerous children around the world who would envy you for having this forum. I urge you to seize this opportunity and use this forum to help and better your community. "However, your efforts will be successful only if you equip yourselves with knowledge and never stop the learning process. Schools and universities are not the end of your journey, they are only the begining. "The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave." Knowledge opens doors of opportunity and success, but knowledge alone without the guiding force of our values, ethics and morals cannot benefit our society, therefore, you must be armed with both virtue and science on your road to success," Shaikha Jawaher said.

She stressed that honesty, integrity, humility, honouring one's parents, respect for one's teachers and mentors, mercy and goodwill, are all virtues which will allow an individual to attain respect and prominence and the love of ones community.

"Never forget that cooperation is the most effective tool if one aims to succeed in building one's community on firm foundations. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Allah favours those who work together". "The words of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) must be your guiding light. Make this session's topic your motto, to be applied in every aspect of your life. You must be the best of companions to each other. You are united by faith, culture and country. Seek no other companions," she said.

Ihssan Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Children and Youth Centres, praised the democratic atmosphere at the first session. He said: "I am delighted to see our children, members of the consultative council, seated in the council hall, freely expressing their points of view, discussing current national issues and making good use of the principle of consultation (Shura), showing respect to others' views and democracy in debate."

Asala Salem, Chairperson of the Sharjah Children's Consultative Council, who hails from the town of Kalba on the east coast of the emirate, expressed the heartfelt appreciation of all the members of the council to Shaikha Jawaher and officials for their attendence of the opening session of the council.

"As far as we, members of this council, are concerned, we will preciously keep our promise to protect this gift and we give our word to act and work hard according to Allah's will and to cooperate so as to contribute to the development process of the nation and the fulfilment of its noble goals," Asala Salem said.
