A city boy, Kenny, moved to the country and bought a donkey from an old >farmer for $100. He paid up and the farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day.

The next day the farmer drove up and said, "Sorry son, but I have some bad news: the donkey’s dead."

Kenny: "Well then, just give me my money back."

Farmer: "Can't do that, son. I went and spent it already."

Kenny: "OK then, just unload the donkey."

Farmer: "Watcha gonna do with him?"

Kenny: "I'm going to raffle him off."

Farmer: "You can't raffle off a dead donkey!"

Kenny: "Sure I can. I just won't tell anybody he is dead."

A month later the farmer met up with Kenny and asked, "What happened with that dead donkey?"

Kenny: "I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars each and made a profit of $898."

Farmer: "Didn't anyone complain?"

Kenny: "Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back!"

Kenny grew up and eventually became the chairman of Enron!

LOL!

Okay that was REALLY funny.  And I have to tell you, I'm looking through this site at work (I know I know...talk about adding to the economic efficiency of CanaDUH), and the lady in the adjoining office had to come around to see what I found so funny.

She gave me a puzzled look even after I read it out to her.  Sigh.

pop quiz.

Can anyone explain why such a transaction - in principle - is not allowed?

Like bhaloo said.. it's a lottery, a form of gambling. And could it also be bay’ majhool ???

I found this and it sounded like it would apply to this situation since the ones buying the donkey tickets didn't know what they were really buying.

Question:

I have a grocery in which there is a product which consists of a carton in which are twelve boxes. This is called “Try Your Luck” – each box contains candy and a child’s toy, either a car, airplane, fan or train. Each box has a different toy inside. What is the ruling on selling these things to customers?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

In this kind of product the boxes are sealed and it is not known which kind of child’s toy is inside. This is bay’ majhool (selling something sight unseen), which lacks the necessary condition of knowledge of what is being sold, either by sight or by description. Hence it is not permissible to deal with this kind of product where what is being sold is not known, either by sight or by description, because it is a kind of deceptive sale such as was forbidden in the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him), who narrated that the Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade sales of deception. (Narrated by Muslim, 3/1153)
