Nine Parts of Desire ?

Assalamu 'alaikum wa rahmatulahi wa barakatuhu.

I was wondering if anyone had any information about the following.

#1 - You know the hadith that talks about the nine parts of desire for women? Is it true
that the full hadith runs something like this: women have nine parts of desire,
and one part restraint; while men have nine parts restraint, and one part
desire.

#2 - Does anyone know the commentary and interpretation of the hadith?  Is there a
commentary suggesting that men need more restraint to control their one desire, while women
need only one to restrain all of their desires???

Have you ever heard of this commentary? Or something like it? Am I completely out to
lunch on this?

It sounds familiar to me -- but I can't remember where I've heard / read it.  And I'd
like any solid information just in case I have incorrect or half-true knowledge.

Jazak'Allah kheir!  And Ramadhaan Mubarak!

wasalaam.

In the book itself it's cited as a saying of Ali RA, but there is no source.

This is a Muslim critique of the book: http://jannah.org/sisters/nineres.html

I am not sure of the exact source of the saying either, but it is attributed to Ali RA and it appears to be misquoted and incomplete because the narration really is, as far as I know:

"Allah created sexual desires in ten parts and gave nine parts to women and one to men and the equal part in shyness, nine parts of shyness to women and one part to men."

So in other words, the sexual desire and capacity for desire is greater women than in men but their hayaa is nine times greater than men; and men have much less sexual desire but much less hayaa.

If one takes the meaning of this and reflects on it, it takes on an entirely different meaning from the possible misquoted narration...

And Allah knows best...

Consider everything in Brooks' book to be a complete and utter lie.  If anything in there was ever true, it sags under the weight of her distortions, lies, misinterpretations, and embellishments.  Brooks' has displayed, in this book, and in other writings, her clear contempt for Islam and Muslims, esp. Muslim women.  Even other Western "Arabists" (or whatever we call them these days) have denounced her sensationalism. This is someone who thinks Muslim women's "liberation" will come through belly dancing in public.   ::)

Here is another review... some of the figures are wrong, I think, but I stand by what I wrote in general.
