The Muslim month of fasting or Ramadan starts next week.

But some young Muslims and non-Muslims are already learning more about it through the 4th Respect Ramadan campaign.

If the Chinese drummers kicking off the campaign are anything to go by, this is the first time non-Muslims are included in the campaign to learn more about the Muslim faith.

Like Caroline and Joanne who will be sharing what they have learnt with their schoolmates.

Ms Caroline Francis, student at CHIJ St Theresa's Secondary School, said: "Before I didn't know that people had to fast and one of the reason they fast is to attain God consciousness and become pure."

When Muslims break fast after sunset, in keeping with the tradition of Prophet Muhammad, they actually eat dates, fruits and appetisers in a meal called an iftar.

Shereen Naaz, a Muslim born in the month of Ramadan reflects upon its significance.

Ms Shereen Naaz, student at Ang Mo Kio Secondary School, said: "Fasting month holds a very special meaning for me because that is the time when I feel my whole family actually bonds together. We wake up for sahoor together, we break fast together."

To further this sense of awareness, MUIS will be organising discussions on contemporary Muslim issues with Muslim leaders.

Mr Maarof Salleh, President of MUIS, said: "They could also be sort of a bridge with activists from other groups, other non-Muslim groups."

And such an awareness will go a long way in enhancing inter-racial interactions.

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister of State for National Development, said: "We live amidst each other. More importantly we depend on each other. In that kind of model, tolerance is to be built on knowledge, understanding, respect and ultimately trust and confidence."

Apart from this roving exhibition, there will be more chances to learn and interact at a Ramadan camp for youth of all races.
