A Taste Sweeter than Honey by Haroon Sellars A day of fasting is a day of caution Feeling fatigued from desirous exhaustion Pass or fail is a matter of the unseen So I must struggle on to keep my record clean A tune up for the soul much more vital than a car To clean up a sinful heart encrusted like tar It’s been a little while since I entered into this state I taste the bitterness of patience during my tasteless wait The sting of thirst settles in As well as painful memories of sin Realizing how much my soul has been ignored Realizing that true hunger is distance from my Lord Realizing careless words that cut like a knife Realizing I have never been truly hungry in my life Realizing I have much longer to go than I thought Realizing that purification is not a thing easily bought But it is a gift for the sick and diseased It is a gift from a Lord well pleased Like one searching all his life for a lost treasure Imagine living for one second outside of this pleasure! Oh how I hope that He is pleased with me when I return Oh how I hope to be shown my mistakes now that I might learn Learn to draw near like those that draw nearest Learn to make a place in my heart where His rememberance is dearest Thoughts crystal clear now to see the ways of error Reflection upon that Great Day its rewards and its terror! Clear is the way of the rejecters who have fled from His Light! Clear is the way of the reflectors who flow with insight Increasing in certitude of the Overwhelming Event! Increasing sensitivity to how time is spent Followers of the Prophets whose restraint gave them power! Manifesters of tawheed shaitan can’t devour Oh consumers of the haram! no surprise at how we’re behaving! Why isn’t the halal sufficient to satisfy our craving!? Are you a Muslim or a fool? Please accept this invitation to a pool Fed by a river called kawthar whiter than milk, sweeter than honey For those who’s Lord was Allah not sex, food and money! Rejoicing that the life of this world is a gonner Waiting for that first glance at the One full of Majesty, Bounty and Honor! How joyful all these thoughts as my heart seems to soften Surely I should fast more often! :-) |

Twilight Ramadan Fatima Seedat Lord! You are never more present Than the moment before we succumb to our elements Ramadan! You are never more needed Than when we think we’ve had enough I long for the passion of my thirst To linger past the hour That I recall the pleasure of the first sip That runs sweetly to where the fast nestled in my throat Month of purity Month of me Month of spiritual rhapsody Love! You are never more treasured Than the moment I see you leave my lovers eyes Ramadan! You are never more beautiful Than when daylight draws your veil I long for the certainty of your nights To spread to my days That I may continue my moon filled vigil so That my lips never cease His remembrance Month of purity Month of me Month of spiritual rhapsody Rose! You are never more beautiful Than the moment before you surrender to die Ramadan! You are never more precious Than in your closing hours I long that these last minutes turn to days That I may save the space of time That runs with the 'rosary' twisting through my fingers Month of purity Month of me Month of spiritual rhapsody |

[slm] Ramadhan: In the bitter sweetness of our nights. The blessings we can’t simply recount The beauty we can not begin to announce Hearts wrapped in the Mercy of the Divine Senses controlled Desires kept in line It’s more than just a fast The embodiment of an essence That ever lasts The canvas of the night Paints all our prayers The depth of our calls Whispering hopes and fears Winds of Mercy dampening All our tears Hardened hearts caved in Remembrance of all Grotesque sins Bleeding till dawn Weeping Forlorn Tasting the bitter sweetness Of an Iman forgone. We pray in the solitude of Our secure nights While true Mujahideen Are fighting for survival rights Reminiscing past victories From Badr to Al Quds Praises of Allah on their lips They keep marching through The revolving doors Of repeating histories Bleeding till dawn Weeping Forlorn Tasting the bitter sweetness Of Martyrdom so strong Fragrances of Jannah Whispering “Home Sweet Home”. The canvas of the night Paints all our prayers The winds of His Mercy Cradle our Hopes and Fears Auspicious days go by Before we know the Month has run dry Tears creep in the softness Of My sheets Have I fulfilled my part? Oh sweet Ramadhan Will I witness your Sacredness again Before my soul this Earthly body departs? Time waits for no one She is so hard to keep I hold this moment close As my soul begins to Weep For the sadness of our State For my brothers and Sisters dying For their faith For remembrances of His Grace For dying to submit Before death claims our Fate It’s the month of surrender The days to return Bleeding till dawn Weeping Forlorn Tasting the bitter sweetness Of a Ramadhan That tarries but a moment Before like yesterday's fleeting breeze She is finally gone. -Maliha Balala |
