BANGALORE: Software king Bill Gates is about to invade the city, and how. On November 13, the Silicon City's developer community will connect with Gates in what is being billed as the biggest such meeting in this part of the world.

Bill Gates, the chairman and chief software architect of the world's largest software company, Microsoft Corporation with revenues touching $28 billion, employs more than 50,000 people in 78 countries. In Bangalore, he will be employing his famous verbal flourishes and engaging 2,500 of the finest software minds, in what is likely to be an enthralling cerebral joust.

Masterminded by the Nasscom (National Association of Software and Services Companies), the event will not be short of big names. Among the VIPs will be Karnataka Chief Minister S.M. Krishna.

Kiran Karnik, president, Nasscom, told The Times of India that this exclusive rendezvous is part of Nasscom's agenda to help Indian developers capitalise on emerging opportunities in cutting edge service lines and technologies such as Web services and bioinformatics.

Says Anant Koppar, CEO, Kshema Technologies, "Meeting and listening to Bill Gates in flesh and blood would mean getting an insight into new areas and emerging technologies __ we definitely can have an insight into the future."

As Microsoft's chairman and chief software architect, Gates works with the company's development teams to turn great ideas into innovative software and services.

"He is an icon and the most successful entrepreneur in the world __ definitely a great motivating factor for budding software entrepreneurs," points out Rajiv Mody, CEO, Sasken Communications, a software firm that specialises in high-end development.

Bala Mahadevan, head, marketing, Digital Soft, says: `This proves that India is not just a remote destination for offshore support services and is in fact a part of long-term strategic initiative of giants like Microsoft."

Gates' address will be followed by an interactive duel during which Anup Gupta, chief technical adviser to Gates, and Collin Png, Asia director for developer evangelist, will take select questions from the audience. Som Mittal, Vice Chairman, Nasscom, will moderate the session.

``I believe there will be a lot of inspirational value listening to a person like Bill Gates __ he made entrepreneur a magic word," says Anees Ahmed, CEO, Mistral Software.

In S. M. Krishna's words: `` When about one third of software developers are in Bangalore, this is the place where he can speak and inspire them __ and almost all of them are young."

Incidentally, Bangalore is home to 65,000-70,000 of the 2,00,000 developers in the country. No prizes for guessing why Gates sees this city as his preferred window to the region's software world.
