[wlm] I learned html a long time ago and just do all my own coding, which is a hindrance I think because there are alot of great programs that will do all kinds of things for you, easier and faster so yeah learn dreameweaver!! :) |

[slm] I think your better of learning html before you begin to use dreamweaver because there is alot of things you can't do with a program that you can do with bare html. [wlm] |

AsalamAlay.com, Peace and e-Greetings be upon you. A long time ago when the world was flat and I didn't have white hair... People would hand type out HTML and create webpages on their home computers and then use an FTP program to upload their webpages to a webserver and then test and retest until their website was half decent....In the process they'd be able to raise a zillion dollars on the stock market as long as they added the words 'dot-com' at the end of their company name... Today, there ain't no more zillion dollars, but you can still have a cool website! One way to create the next Jannah.org is to use a CMS. (jannah grins as she read the word 'next'...) A 'Content Management System' ? Or 'CMS' for short. " Whad dat? " ....you say? Simply, if you can handle a hotmail account, you can run your own fully blown professional website... Without being that technical kind of programmer person. Think of it as a 'website operating system'. You 'install' your 'CMS' onto a webhosting company's webspace which you either rent on a monthly basis or get for free from a friend's server etc. Once your CMS is uploaded and installed and active, you then go about 'managing' your content. that is, adding articles, stories, weblinks, book reviews, photos, pretty much whatever 'content' you'd like on your website, and you choose to present it in a way that you suits you. You can customize your CMS'd website until you're happy with it. I use CMS software to run almost all my websites. And so do the following Muslim Websites: www.Bahraini.TV SistersInIslam.net Sisters.Islamway.com As far as Dreamweaver, Adobe GoLive, Frontpage, they all cost Money and time in learning and bloatware on your hard drive. I use the PostNuke CMS version .714. It's free: NO $ It's open source. Like linux vs Windows. It's PHP, but you don't hafta be a PHP programer to use it. Okay, enuffa da sales pitch, if ya want s'more info, post below. aiite? ~ HiMY! ~ |

Bismillah Assalam alaikum warahamatullah Jazakum Allah khairan all :) i have the same questions where we can download CMS ? can we stuff a site using CMS in a 5 MB space ? for sister deen :-) i don't think u can use CMS in geocities because geocities don't support php, so u have to use only HTML and you can use Java Script i think if you want a real web site try this link http://www.netfirms.com/ ( i wish i saw them before.... anyway it's all a naseeb no? also i saw this guy on IRC before and he said he will give free hosting for islamic web sites jadmadi@jadmadi.net is his email ( jordanian bro i think) as for the NEXT Jannah.org i think sis jannah :-) that you shouldn't use this kind of ready made web site, i mean they all look the same just go and visit them first on the upper left the "enter your name and password" thing, then under it a place for the visitors to vote on silly things then the "there are currently 0 user and 0 visitors on our popular website" i mean it became really like a uniform or something what makes Jannah.org a special web site is it's homemade taste, with those butterflies and the waterfall and the mammalist and all this things, i mean it's like a personal website with all the content of a big islamic reference...... since the first time i visited Jannah.org (and that's before i visit the madina) the site really inspired me and i said to my self i want to make something beautiful like this.. so please don't use those things that the other websites are using and the most important don't make a free jannah.org webmail..why? i sent my answer to you the power of your du'a |

[slm] I'm a newbie here but I hope I can help as much as possible. As for your first question, you can download a free CMS from www.postnuke.com or www.phpnuke.com . Personally, I use www.postnuke.com for my www.qiblaa.com site, but it is mostly for personal prefereance than any other reason. Unfortunately, I don't think you could use CMS programs at the geocities sites. You need a Mysql databse to make sure it runs. That means you may have to get your own web host that support MySql and PHP4. Just ask any host provider, they will help you with these technicalities. It would help if you had some technical assistance when using CMS. Not absolutely necessary, but useful to have. Otherwise, you could just download a dreamweaver alternative from www.download.com. LAst I heard, aracnophilia is a program worth looking into.
hmm.. frankly i'm using a pirated copy of dreamweaver ...i don't know if it's haram or not ( i don't use a pirated arabic programs), but it's the only way to learn or we have just to throw our computer's away from the window, i mean all the software here is pirated Windows Office VB Macromedia everything
Assalammu'alaikum Bro.. I used to have pirated stuff as well on my computer and a program which I borrowed from a friend... I think it's a quite common practice among students....BUT then it got me thinking.... Isn't using pirated stuff the same like using softwares without legally paying the correct price....or using something without the developer's permission.......in a sense, isn't it like stealing something? I may be wrong but logically that would be haram in my view.....that's y I've removed those programs from my computers...and trying to save money to buy them... that's why too ...I don't d/l mp3s too.... unless the creators explicitly allowed us to d/l it.....it's one of those grey areas i guess... but as muslims we're suppose to stay away from those doubtful matters, rite? ;) also.... I'm a computer science student...and I know how much blood and sweat it takes to create a program....even if it's just a simple program.... or guis..... when we have programming projects, my friends and I would usually end up staying up in the computer labs from say 1 pm until 8 am the next morning..only taking breaks for praying or dinner....and that can go on for ages every day... fixing bugs in programs, figuring out algorithms, etc... it really drains us mentally & physically....not to mention the stress... that's y I've learned to respect ppl who develop softwares... it's not an easy job.... I think for most of us .. the problem is price... here, in Australia, we're pretty lucky there's a cheaper software price for academics (i.e. for students or uni staff).... i think u might want to ask if they have cheaper price there as well if u buy in bulk or something.....or u can opt to just pay for the extra license if u want to install the software in another computer... also...nowadays..there're a lot of those free open source programs so that's another alternative... Allah knows best...goodluck! Wassalam. :-) |

Assalamu Alaikum, HTML is really much easier than you think. If you want to learn (which I suggest you do) then you should check out www.htmlgoodies.com or www.webmonkey.com. These sites are really good. If not, then I recall seeing NetObjects Fusion ver.2.0 downloadable for free off the web. I got my copy with a cd on .net magazine, but I think you'd be able to download it. Oh of course the download would be huge in the many megabytes. And I'm sorry I can't give you the URL, coz I don't know... you'll just have to try your luck at google, Insha-Allah. Wassalamu Alaikum, Uzer |
