Fundimentalist or Fantic???

I did this similar post a long while back. Didn't get much of a response.
So thought I'd try it again.

I'm on the road and have had the privilage of meeting new friends,
both Muslim and Christian.  Two ladies I met who worked at the same
motel one Muslim and the other Christian and I had a wonderful
conversation. They have a wish to go visit Isreal together and show how
Muslim and Christian can get along together just fine. One stated,
"We'd proably get shot just for being together"

What is your ideas and thoughts on the difference between a fundimentalist and a fantic?

Two of my many ideas are:
1) One will die for their cause while the other will kill for it.
2) One will gladly with their heart share their faith with others while the other will force it upon others.

Now I know I mispelled a few words,   :(  if there is spell check on this posting board would someone please tell me, thank you

I think a fundamentalist follows the exact way of their religion...as it was revealed.

A fanatic messes with the tenants and follows the messed up version.

I don't like these terms!!! They are both concotions of the media "labelling" us and they both hold this negative vibe.
I just don't like them.
Me two cents  :P

Maliha :-)

PS: How about just "believers" and those lead astray? Or Mu'uminun and dhalimun? Or ....
Other terms that are used to refer to US *by* Us.

I agree with Maliha with  regards to labels.  These questions are almost offensive.  Both of these are terms are used in a derrogatory sense by westerners towards some Muslims.

Uh, why? It isn't the Muslims and Christians who have problems in Palestine. Actually, they work alongside, and many Christian peace groups come from outside to help the Muslims and Christians there.  If one was a Jew and the other an Arab Christian or any Muslim, that might be different... But then again, it might not.

Just sayin'...

I agree with others on "fundamentalist" and "fanatic" though. Fundamentalist doesn't really apply to us in the way *they* want it to.  It's just someone who follows the fundamentals of the deen.  Fanatic -- well, we all have a few of them in our family tree, don't we then?  But I can't think there's a good association for it.

I am posting this way cause it seems like everytime I get on this
web site after two or three times I can no longer post, this is
so weird, anyway I did not mean to offend anyone, these
terms are not used to discribe only Muslims,
folks use them regarding Christians and other religions.
My apologies, was just thoughts

Yeah, I got myself in a bit of a jam when my teacher asked me if I was a fundamentalist and I said yes, in the way a student had just said meant going backt to the basics. Still, the emotional connotations of the word surprised him a bit, then since he knows some about muslims, he said, how can you go back if Islam never went away? I said, well I don't mean for all Muslims, just the ones who aren't fully practicing. I think I meant going back in the since of trying to get back to the purity of the time of the Rasul(saws) and of the innocence of childhood.

Sorry for getting off track, but perhaps we should reclaim these words in the way blacks reclaimed the 'n' word or women the b---- word. It seems
empowering to be the one determining what you'll make words mean, rather than letting other peeps do that for you.

Fanatic comes from the word 'fan' or vice versa, that should help ya a little.

A fundamantalist is someone who follows the text of his/her religion exactly.  They do have a bad press because many of them try to force their way on others.

Well, like I said this was not to offend and I don't see anything wrong with the word. fundamentalist ... to me it means someone grounded, devoted and such. I don't see it at all in a negative light.

Fanatic???????? One could be a work fanatic, a religous fanatic, a food fanatic, a clean fanatic.

My mother is fanatical about house cleaning, I am one who believes a home should be clean enough to be healthy yet dirty enough to be happy

I truly like Sis Kathy's ideas
So if anyone doesn't like the word fundamentalist??????? Gosh thats ashame cause to this lady  :) that word to me means grounded, devoted and not swaying to outside influence.
As I said below one shares .. the other forces
one would die for the other would kill for and Sis Kathy really described it well in her post.
To those I offended I hope after you read what that word means to me you would feel complimented.

I'm still offended by the usage of these terms and the definition you are giving.  There is nothing wrong in dieing for the proper cause.

Allah's Apostle said, "Allah guarantees (the person who carries out Jihad in His Cause and nothing compelled him to go out but Jihad in His Cause and the belief in His Word) that He will either admit him into Paradise (Martyrdom) or return him with reward or booty he has earned to his residence from where he went out."  (Sahih Bukhari 9.555)

You should just drop these terms from your vocabulary as they are offensive and have a negative connotation in this day and age.

Hijab, Polygany, and 'Moslim' and Islam have negative connotations in today's society too.

I guess I should have been clearer, Fundamentalist and Fanatics are insulting terms used towards other Muslims.  Hijab, Polygany, and Muslim aren't insulting terms used towards Muslims or at least terms Muslims wouldn't be offended by if someone called them that.  Nowadays  Muslims are called fundamentalists or fanatics just for doing the basics like praying.
