Br. Abdul Basir is the only person that I know of on this board who is 'employed' in the field of medicine. Perhaps, now, the brother is in right place at the right time :). I remember from one of his posts that he was supposed to be in Saudi Arabia for 'Umrah during the second 'Ashrah of Ramadan. May Allah(swt) accept his deeds and grant all of us the opportunity to visit His House (Ameen).
There is a sister too on the board who is studying medicine but I have no idea how far she has reached in her endeavours. May Allah make it easy for her (Ameen).
As for me, I am still cramming the books like crazy these days to get through my exams and get an employment in field of medicine, InshaAllah. Dua's requested, please:)

Wassalam.

hehe, no seriously, i'm in my 3rd year of medschool, alhamdulilah, i'm on OB/GYN right now and man is adoption lookin good  ;D  delivering a baby looks like the most painful thing in the world! No wonder it's like a jihad for women and that all your dua's are answered inshallah. hehe,  now that i know that, i should ask the women to say a little prayer for me  :-/

I'm with you on that one.  I volunteered at a refugee hospital in Themiddleofnowhere a couple of years ago....  And the week I spent working in the delivery room was even more horrifying than any other...
Actually the two days I spent working with the dentist was probably even worse....he spent the day doing minor procedures on people's mouths without any anaesthesia  ::)

Turned me off becoming a doctor....(the world should be grateful)..

Har har har...as if I would. I can unintentionally say some stupid stuff but to voluntarily insult meself on public board ? nuh uh :p I spell my suffixes with an -s- and not a -z- so I don't often use American lexicography...if any  :-/

Also off topic - My Arabic Prof recounted an incident to us.  He was in Syria once and was at a cafe drinking tea (is that all u do there ?) and along came this couple and tried to order something in Arabic. Well it soon became obvious that they are not native speakers so they made many mistakes that were ...uhhh....startling.  Finally after much clarifying and whatnots, the cafe guy said in English "Please speak in English.  U are making me embarrassed by what u are saying."

Till today me Prof refused to tell us wot exactly they said. Grrrrr

Just found this thread! hehe, sis Barr, my version of bimbo is the same as yours! I would never have thought of the other meanings,  ;)

Yep, another medical student here...2 more years of med school to go!

Ruqayyah, sis, I went thru Obs and I can definitely relate!  I enjoyed the babie once they were born though, so maybe Paediatrics is more my field! :)  But seriously, learning to deliver a baby was DEFINITELY one of the most useful skills I acquired this year, and one that can come in very handy let me tell ya!  A friend of mine ended up single-handedly delivering a baby in the supermarket last year, cuz the ambulance would take too long and he was the only "medical" person around...(btw, what the woman so close to her due date was doing out shopping is another mystery left unsolved!:)  )

About the prayers of the almost-not-pregnant-anymore women- I had a really young (16yrs) first time mom, whose husband works at the masjid here, and she was expecting twins, and they were waaaaay premature, and I didnt even get to ask her for Duaas, when she said that I shouldnt worry, becuz Allah will help to me to well in this course, and I'd become a great doctor, inshaAllah! We were crying together at that point!

Another really powerful Duaa came from a Muslim granddad, who I snuck into the ward to be able to say the Athaan and Iqaamah in his granddaughter's ears.  The nurses would not allow it, and her dad was just too nervous to do it, so we had to distract the nurses and sneak grandpa in there...it was 2am, so I dont think anyone would have noticed anyway...

ok, Obs stories aside. I have to start making notes for my Ramadaan diary for today...:)

Wasalaam

Can you meds who have taken/are taking USMLEs recommend some good books for preparation? I need to send it to someone preparing for it in India.

I took a Kaplan course and the 4 books that they gave us were good and very inclusive. it's a bit overwhelming to sit and read through it yourself which is why i was glad i took the course. the professors went quickly through the material and hit on the high points.  The High Yield series of books (i think that's what they were called) were pretty good for a quick synopsis of what you need to know.

oh also, First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 is EXCELLENT :)  I used that book as my "set of notes" so to speak. I would add in extra stuff that i thought was important into that book and used it as my quick review book towards the end right before the test.

best of luck  :-*

Ok so this post make me rethink about having kids any time in the near future ;). But somehow everyone here seems to do epidural. Doesn't that have side effects a few months after the delivery?

:) Interesting topic...Just would like to add that I'm in my first year in nursing and I can't wait to see the real heavy duty stuff! :) ( I know...I'm odd! lol) .......Anyways, DUHA...I've had the epidural and I don't regret it. ( I had no side effects) Just a little advice though for those women who want to take it for the first time.....whatever you do, do NOT look at the needle! :o :-/

Another good studying tip i forgot to mention was to do as many questions as you can! The Kaplan Q Bank is excellent, b/c the setup of the program is exactly like the real thing. so you don't have to worry about adjusting to a whole different format in which the quesitons are in.

I know that in India, they have Kaplan centres that offer kaplan courses and materials, so that should help, InshaAllah. I dont know how much do they cost there, but, perhaps, if u are in  North India, u can get the copies of notes (although Kaplan is copyrighted stuff, but u know that back in our countries they just make sure that they 'copy it right':)). South India, its difficult to get the notes there because amazingly the states there are kinda strict in observing the laws, rules and regulations. That's what I heard from my South Indian friends here. Wallahu A'lam.
Board Review Series is not available for all the subjects but for Physiology, Pathology and Behavioral Science only (atleast in Pakistan, wherefrom I got my books to study). But they definitely are good review.
The High Yield series of books (i think that's what they were called) were pretty good for a quick synopsis of what you need to know.
Yup, they are called 'High Yield Series' and they definitely are very good.
First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 is EXCELLENT
No doubt about it. That's not only the First Aid, man, I am telling u, that's the Last Aid too. Very concise book and a must. U have to have it and the last 3 or 4 weeks, just rely on that, InshaAllah.

U bet! Its a pool of 2000 questions available online. The website is kaplanmedical.com. They charge $99 per month to access it but its worth it.

Reminds me of the time when I saw delivery for the first time in my life. Shivering, sweating........completely shocked!, and after that I was holding all my firends and was like," That's it man! No marriage, no children, can't let the woman go through such pain". Wanted my mom to be with me that day, but unfortunately we were in different countries at that time. Couldn't even talk to her to tell her how great she is and How Great the Creator is. Wallahi, yaa'nee, u guys gotta see a delivery to appreciate what do these women go through. I had also seen episiotomy being done on that patient, and it was so stressful just seeing it, can't ever imagine doing it with my own hands. I have done/seen a lot of butchery :)( I mean, surgery), and surgery itself , specially orthopedic surgery is my passion but seeing a Normal Vaginal Delivery(NVD) and cesarian sections was an exceptional experience.
SubhanAllah, and the circle of life goes on, millions come in this world every day and millions go out, but yet the feeling is so vague what happens after death...................May Allah preserve our eeman (Ameen).

Wassalam.

Thats the time you realise that 'jannah is under  mother,s feet' the delivery of the baby is such a cool thing one minute you are in control and the next you dont know  whats going on and there is the baby in your hands i would be so scared that it would slip and fall  :o but obgyn was fun
peads was a pain children cried too much, everything looked the same in dermat, you couldnt see anything in ent esp E, I was  sacerd about optho
didnt want the eye to pop out, psych was fun guess long term one would slip into la la land, ortho was gory :o reminded me of a carpenter and his drill bit ;), surgery was exciting but my fingers were too fat for it ;) so i guess I might just settle down for good old medicine  :) If I reconsider doing a Phd in epidemiology
