What's a good computer?

Ok, I haven't bought a new computer in years, my AMD-ATHOLON 700mhz system with a 16 meg Voodoo 3dfx graphics card is getting old for the new games out there.  I don't think Unreal Tournament 2003 will even work with it.

So if I was to get something new what would you recommend, bang for the buck.  I never buy the highest end systems, cause prices drop so fast, and on the low end side, the price differences don't warry too much, so I'm looking for something in the middle range.

So the really important thing for me then is the graphics card.  So any iideas?  I'm kinda clueless on the graphics card, i guess there are really only 2 major players, nvidia and ati, but i heard ati sucks for games.  what about motherboards, go with via chipset or intel?

Bro, you've come to right place alhamdulilah  8)

The thing is, your 700 mhz Athlon system may still be usable to play games like UT2K3. All you need is newer video card.

From the beginning of the video card wars I have always went with Nvidia, and true enough Nvidia is #1 now. Your 3DFX card is pretty much junk because most of these newer games support T&L (transform and light) functions that the 3DFX card doesn't.

How much do you want to spend? You can go with the top if line GeForce 4 Ti4600 or the lesser GeForce 4 MX series. The Ti is the top of line, you can get ones with up 128MB of DDR RAM onboard, pretty crazy stuff if you ask me.

The only problem with this vid card, is the cost. Cheapest you can probably find it for is around $200 - $250   :o

But you can go for the one just below the Ti4200  which is going for around $100-$145  :)

CPU wise it really depends on what you're willing to spend. I'd go with AMD mainly because their CPU's are a lot cheaper than Intel's.

As far as motherboards go, go for a SOYO. Those are by far in my opinion for AMD based cpu's the best motherboards you can buy on the market.

Fry's has a deal going on right now, you get a SOYO Dragon Platinum mboard with an AMD 2100+ XP CPU all for $199.

Check out: http://www.soyousa.com/products/proddesc.php?id=176

for the specs on the motherboard.

Also check out http://www.fatwallet.com for superb deals on computer equipment.

Edit: Check out http://www.googlegear.com , they also have good deals too.

Thanks for the help guys, and I appreciate the offer brother Reciter, that was very kind of you, but I guess as Al-Basha pointed out my problem lies in my video card, so I will have to decline your generous offer.

Its kinda funny, the graphics card is more then the PC.  Kashif I heard that nvidia's mother boards are going to be really expensive.  What do you think about the motherboard Al-Basha?

I think for nvidia there are 3 types, the ultra, ti, and the mx, right?  and they have different series within those.

Salaams,

Before you buy any hardware check my favorite PC Mag, www.pcpro.co.uk, check out the A list on the site, look for the motherboard and for the Garphics Card. (The AMD motherboard on the A lisst is  good its got an integrated Nvidi Chip on it).

Hanif.

p.s. There was a rumour once that Pentium 4s had some sort of assembly carried out in Israel is that true or was it a rumour ?

salamu aliakom,

I've read several reviews on this chipset and it's worth buying just yet.

The nForce2 is equivalent to the Geforce 4 MX 440 series. So if you really want great frame rates for your games it would behoove you to get something like the Ti 4200 or 4600.

Nvidia is coming out with a new series of graphics boards, but keep in mind none of the games out there take advantage of the computations it can do.

For example, I have a GeForce 2 MX400 32MB RAM and I can play Jedi Knight 2: Outcast at 32-bit color, 1024X768 at about 60-70 frames per second. Not bad, at 32-bits of color. The frame rate goes down when I start adding in more than 4 bots but then again I don't usually host games.

Check out http://www.anandtech.com for good reviews on mboards and vid cards.

what about for digital video editing? Are these video cards as good, or is there a difference?

Sis Ele, Digital Video editing cards cost a lot more, if you want more info on those cards check out the above link I provided. There was also an article on how to upgrade your computer for Digital Video editing, if I find it I'll let you know.
