| [slm], I hope inshallah everyone is doing well and is having a great Ramadan. I wanted to ask a question about something I saw during Tarwaeeh prayers. One of my friends and some other people i saw during Tarweeh had a translation of the quran with them and were reading along with the Imam while he said the surah during prayer. They were praying and looking at the quran at the same time. This year our mosque has started something i really liked which was before Tarweeh prayers each night they would talk about the Surah's they would read that day. So these sisters during prayer would look at the surah the imam was reading in the quran (basically looking at the English Translation of the Surah while they were praying as Imam was sayiing the surah in). Can you do that, it is something I have never seen before? Thanks and Wasalam, red |

| [slm] here's what I found: Question: What is the ruling on holding the Mus-haf in the case of one who is following an imaam in praying Taraaweeh in Ramadan, on the grounds that he is following the imaam’s recitation? Answer: Praise be to Allaah. Holding the Mus-haf for this reason is contrary to the Sunnah, for several reasons: 1. It prevents a person from placing his right hand over his left when standing. 2. It leads to a lot of unnecessary movements, such as opening the Mus-haf, closing it, and placing it under one's arm. 3. These movements are very distracting to the worshipper. 4. It prevents the worshipper from looking at the place of sujood. Many scholars say that looking at the place of sujood is Sunnah and is better. 5. The one who does that may forget that he is in prayer, unless his heart is properly focused upon his being in prayer, unlike when he is standing in a humble and focused manner with his right hand upon his left, tilting his head towards the place of sujood. In this case he will be more likely to remember that he is praying and that he is behind the imaam. Are prayers not accepted if the Imam reads from Quran during Tarawih prayers? Answer: Praise be to Allaah. There is nothing wrong with reading from the Mus-haf during night prayers in Ramadaan, because this will make the members of the congregation hear all of the Qur’aan. The Qur’aan and Sunnah indicate that Qur’aan should be recited in prayer, whether it is from the Mus-haf or from memory. It was proven that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) told her freed slave Dhakwaan to lead her in praying qiyaam in Ramadaan, and he used to read from the Mus-haf. Al-Bukhaari mentioned this in his Saheeh… Fataawa Islaamiyah, vol.2 – Shaykh Ibn Baaz (www.islam-qa.com) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Question: Is it permissible for a person to carry a Mus-haf which has footnotes (Tafseer or commentary) whilst praying qiyaam al-layl, and if he comes across a word he does not understand, he looks at what it means whilst he is praying? | assalaamu alaikum Sh. Suhaib discussed this a few years ago too. He said that if its necessary, the Imam can read from the mushaf, and also another person behind if there are no huffaaz to be able to correct the imam. But it isn't something that the members of the congregation should do. Kashif Wa Salaam |
