So what evidence is there exactly that women must wear hijaab?  (Preferably from the Qur'an)...

Had a heated debate with a good friend.  Lost miserably.  :)

yikes that u lost miserably !!! :( :(    The evidence from quran are as fllws:

Chapter 24, verses 30-31

And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male attendants free of sexual desires, or small children who have no carnal of women; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah in repentance, that ye may be successful.

Also in 33:59

O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when out of doors): that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.

sis u can read  the tafseer of the above ayat ....and u will find out what the Ansar women did when the verse was revealed.
MAy allah continu to strengthen our iman inshallah

I remember on the other board I had posted the evidence using only the Quran and looking at the Arabic words, but you know how bad this search engine is. :(  Anyways, I came across a website that had a little more detail then what I posted and should help you to explain in better to your friend.  Its really unfortunate that a lawyer lost the debate, hota hai. :)

Thank you both very much...

I read over the site, which is very thorough, and I'm guessing that  it comes down to the word "khimaar"...  I guess translating it as "veil" in English doesn't quite cut it.

Now, just to clarify...I am not a lawyer ;)  Nevertheless, I only lost miserably because I gave up ez.  (Yeah yeah, okay, that didn't even convince me.)
