Alsalaam aleikum and Eid Mubarak to all in the Capital District and around the world! :)...........

I know most of Albany will be fasting tomarrow BUT it seems to me the rest of the world isn't. I checked ISNA and they said no moon sighting. I checked with the Quran wal Sunnah website and they stated there was. I and my family are personally going to celebrate Eid tomarrow. In any case, I hope everyone had a wonderful- worship filled Ramadan. May you all have many more!

Ahh...It feels good to be able to  [] in the day again!  :-/

Most of the Arab world follows Saudi (and let's not get into that mess) and many follow global sighting (if moon is sighted or claimed to be sighted anywhere in the world it's eid). In N. America there's a Fiqh council of scholars and a Shurah of  the major organizations that decided the best way to determine Eid is to go by local sighting (ie N America).  So they collect reports the night before and then announce the findings. This way in theory all the Muslims in a certain geographic area (N.America) should be fasting and celebrating Eid the same day.

In my area, there's one masjid that refuses to do anything except follow Saudi, the other two follow the shurah, but one of them wants to have the prayer only in their masjid in multiple shifts and the other has already rented a big armory for all the Muslims.  These divisions are also starting to fall on nationality lines and is detrimentally affecting the youth.  What to do? No idea, just make dua I guess. :P

Not in my part of California, Belmont/Bay Area that is. We have it on Friday as per ISNA. I thought this year atleast it would be celebrated on the same day in the US. Wallahu a'lam.

Anyways, Eid Mubarak to everyone!

Sis Janna,

Here in Nairobi, the Muslims are divided over Eid again.  Some celebrated it today (Thursday) while some (I am one of them) will celebrate it tomorrow (Frdiay).

Those who celebrated it today are following annoucements in the Arab world, in particular Saudi Arabia.  The moon was not sighted here.  These divisions always cause rifts and misunderstanding.  And yeah, they fall on nationality lines.  Those who do this here all the time are the Somalis from Somalia while Kenyan Somalis (I am one of them) and the rest of the Kenyan Muslims follow what the Chief Kadhi advises.  At least this year, Ramadan was started the same day here in Kenya as was in most of the world.

And I agree with you when you say: "What to do? No idea, just make dua I guess".

Anyway, Eid Mubarak to all Mulsims regardless of which day they celebrate it.  Peace and harmony among us, INSHA-ALLAH.

Eid Mubarak!

Apart from making dua, sit down with these people and discuss these issues openlt  to why we have differences, thats the only way. Have some sort of roadmap to uniting the people and if there are differences then they should be based upon the Sharia, yet education should be given to all about the moon so when people do talk they are not ignorant and hurtful.

Another thing is the kufr see this as a further opportunity to create divisions amongst us.

I live a few hours away from Ottawa and we are all celebrating it on Friday except a few masjid's here and their who only follow Saudi. If the moon was sighted in Ottawa then why wasnt it reported to ISNA or the other organization that runs the moonsighting thin in toronto? http://www.moonsighting.com/moon.html
Because according to them
"The moon's conjunction is on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at 7:34 UT, i.e. 2:34 am Eastern Standard Time - 11:34 pm Pacific Standard Time on Dec 3. [glow=red,2,300]On December 4, the moon cannot be seen in North America nor any part East of it,[/glow] although the age of the moon is 17 hours at sunset on West coast, but the moon is going to be in the Southern Hemisphere and will not be visible on Dec 4. There will also be a solar eclipse on December 4th, further enhancing the chance of Eid being on December 6th. Therefore Eid-al-Fitr in the whole world except for some Polynesian Islands should be on Friday, Dec 6, 2002 insha'Allah. "

"Saudi Arabia has announced that the moon has been sighted and declared tomorrow Thursday as EID day. Those who follow Global Moonsighting will be celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr on December 5, 2002.

Hilal Committee of Toronto has declared Friday, December 6th to be the day of Eid-ul-Fitr as there was no confirmed moonsighting anywhere in North America. Those who follow local moonsighting will be celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr on Friday."

assalamu alikum,

Most mosques in ontario canada (and rest of canada) follow the shura council and are celebrating Eid on Friday.

I heard from a relative in ottawa that some people in the community (more than one) reported seeing the crescent.  They DID report it to the hilal committee, but the hilal committee was of the opinion that the crescent is impossible to visualize in N. America, (as per that of moonsighting.com) and rejected those reports/sightings.

My question is, if the shura council had already made up its mind that there is *NO* chance of seeing the new moon in N. America, why even bother with individual reports, if they are going to discount them anyways???  Personally, I think the whole Eid date dispute is deeply rooted in political differences.

But let me just remind posters that we are all human and are inherently bound to err.  So maybe those sightings in Saudi Arabia were not real crescents, and maybe they were.  What do you do, the individual comes infront of the committee and swears that he saw the moon. They take that report into account. It is not like they are delibrately trying to mess up the Hijri calender.

So, insha'Allah, let us not be drawn to those ethnic dividing lines, and trust 'ulee al-amr', and give others the benefit of doubt (70 excuses!!).

Eid Mubarak!

peace.

I can't understand why they rejected it, thats crazy.  I was surprised the announcement came out so soon, when it was barely dark out here on the west coast.  I think what needs to happen is that from different masajids around n. america we need to have people that know how to sight the moon.  Then they report back to ISNA HQ if their is a moon sighting.  if someone in their community says their is a moon sighting, the local representative verifies it and then reports it back to ISNA.

Actually if we are going by a calculated llunar calendar thursday is the 1st of shaawal, check it out on www.islamicfinder.org.

Assalamu Alaikum Mohammed D;

Two liable witnesses and three underage witnesses (kids- Approx 11, 13 and 10 or something) saw the moon on Wednesday around 4:40.

Usually our community follows the sighting only in NORTH America- (ie whatver isna/ the fiqh council say) however, when  the two witnesses saw the moon, they were bropught into the masjid, made to say the shahadah, the qasam ( that they saw the moon), and were asked several questions about the specifics of the moon (such as the height, size, opening, thickness, times, place...etc.) This 'cross-examination' as I call it was done by a group of knowledgeable brothers from saudi, who were all satisfied, then at the mosque (i was there-- it was soooo cool), the imaam and five other brothers did the same thing in a closed room, and then a third time in front of the ~1000 ppl congregation... all were satisfied- so the imam couldn't reject the sighjting and declared it eid today.

They contatcted isna last night (ISNA Toronto)-- I don't know where that went though.

It's all good-- eid mubarak today or tomorrow-  remeber the ikhtilaaf (difference of opinion) in this ummah is a blessing- lets treat it as one :)

Any more questions ?  :-*

Wassalamu Alaiakum

My trustworthy neighbour has told me today that our brothers/sisters saw the moon in Riyadh(Saudia Arabia) on Wednesday for four minutes. Insha-allah I'll try and confirm the report later on. Perhaps brother Haniff could help.

Most of Australia celebrated Eid on Friday.  There were a few masajid which followed Saudi and who celebrated on Thursday, but the majority celebrated on Friday.  The moon was definitely sighted in my community here on the east coast, on Thursday evening, it was verified by the Imam and then it was reported to AFIC (Australian Federation of Islamic Councils).  What usually happens, is we try and sight the moon on the east coast, if there's nothing, then we wait for sunset in the central states, nothing, then we wait for the west coast.  There's usually a 1 hour-2hr difference between the east and the west coast.

For us, if the moon wasn't sighted on Thursday then we would have had to fast Friday and celebrate on Saturday.  Apparently it was a very beautiful crescent and very easy to see as the sky was very calm and clear.

Eid morning was awesome, the prayers were held on the grounds of the local Islamic school and the turnout was huge.   I think the official head count was about seven thousand people, but it seemed like a lot more.

Hope everyone else had an amazing Eid and got lots of eid presents and "Eidy".  Here's mine to all of you --->   [] [] [] [] []

I so agree that we need a chai smiley!   Whatever your fancy, have a bebsi or a cha on me!  Eid Mubarak!

When i read these posts I started laughing .....i thought that their was division  and disagreement about the day of Eid only in my country( since this happens every year) !! Some celebrated it on Thursday and some on Fri !!  ::) ::)

Its disheartning to see the ummah of Muhammad (saws) arguing as to when is the day of eid !! One must always look at the Sharia and evidence from the sunnah . As 1 of the posts indicated this is a good way for non muslims to attack us and say we are not united

We must make dua so that their is unity of the ummah and inshallah a day will come when the entire ummah will celebrate eid the same day !! :)
