Asalaamu Alykum,
Since I reverted to Islam I have wanted to wear face veil it is somewhat of an honor to wear it, the problem I have is I work at a government facility.
Also you don't see too many sister's in the Seattle area wear face veil. I feel very stongly about this and think it would make me stronger in my deen. Can anyone give me adivce? Thank you.

I just want to say first that I am not a scholar or an authority, I just want to tell you what I have come across.  I have also considered wearing niqab/face veil.  I have talked to my husband and many friends about it.  I read a book entitled Hijab that supports wearing it.  However, I want to let you know that it is not haram to not wear it, as far as I know.  I have friends who wear it and they said to think about it for a long time before you decide.  They started wearing it because they thought it was obligatory but now have been wearing it so long, they wouldn't take it off.  Another said after she bought it, it stayed in her home for two years before she decided to wear it.  My husband said that since I am a new Muslim of one year that it is best to concentrate on my Islamic education first than to spend energy on a much-debated topic like this.  I would suggest thinking about it for a long time because once you put it on, it is not good to take it off.  Pray istikhara about it and see how you feel.  May Allah guide us all, Ameen.

Assalamu 'alaikum wa Rahmatullah,
However, I want to let you know that it is not haram to not wear it, as far as I know.
There is a thread in this same forum Naseeha Corner on the topic "hijab", and bro. bhaloo has given a link that discusses this hijab issue in detail. There, after the discussion, they have reached this conclusion, quite convincingly I would say, that "Niqab is not Fard". However, the impression that I have been having ever since I moved to States ( and which is not very long but hardly 2 years) is that it is quite difficult to observe niqab here in the western world, specially when sisters are involved in professional work/jobs. It just came to my mind once that in Islam there are conditions like 'daroorah' or 'haajjah' under which things are usually lenient. So, I was just thinking that since it is not Fard to observe the niqab, why dont sisters make things easier for them. I mean, the times u are not working, wear niqaab as per ur wish, and the times while u are out working, just resort to hijaab i-e fulfilling the basics and 'faraaed'. But that's just a thought:). Wallahu A'lam and May Allah forgive me if I said something wrong (Ameen).

Wassalam.

Hmm...does that mean it's not permissible to wear it only in certain situations?  I've considered wearing niqab, but I know I can't on a permanent basis as yet since my parents wouldn't allow it.  As it is, I don't think I'm ready for it on a full-time basis anyway.  However, there are times when I sincerely wish I was wearing one - for instance when I'm having to interact with rather-too liberal brothers who cannot lower their gaze or speak respectfully (in various work for ISOCs & Muslim organisations etc) or when walking in a public place - even accompanied - in an Arab or Indopak country...a thousand eyes bore into your flesh, making you feel totally exposed.

I mentioned this to a friend who told me that if I put it on, it would be wrong of me to take it off...I don't know - is there an actual ruling/hadith that categorically purports an all or nothing approach to niqab?

Sorry I know it's probably a stupid question and that this is a classic topic...but none of the literature I've read has answered it...

Iam neither a scholar nor an expert but I would love to share some insights
which iam sure will help a lot of folks who are thinking of adding their valuable opinions  to this topic of veil/niqab ;)
CONSTITUTION OF THE MADINA  - ARTICLE III: Restrictions

No prolonged arguments about any issues that even the scholars of Islam over the centuries have not come to a consensus on! This includes controversial issues (i.e. meat, music, Mawlid, the Taliban, voting, Madhabs, bashing scholars, suicide bombings, Niqab, sunni/shia/sufi/salafi/jamaat/whatever debates).
Salaam Alykum,
Thank you everyone so much!!! I'm Inshallah I'll be going to scool to become a Doula (labor couch and instructor) this will hopfully allow me to wear niqab. I have worn my hijab up around my face and have gotten some intresting looks. I get those any way since I'm so fare complected people don't know if I'm a nun or Muslim. I'll have to check out some books.
I guess I just feel like I'm still not wearing enough almost like I feel that I'm not wearing anything and would feel better with my face covered as well.
Thanks again for all your info, take care.

Emily:

I would say where it when and where you feel comfortable wearing it.  If you can't wear it at work (and this can be true for women in Jordan too), then wear it to the masjid, or wherever.

I recently read an article where the brother chastised people who drive sisters away from niqab / niqabis, b/c they tell women "It's all or nothing!" in regards to wearing it all the time.  Since a sister might not feel strong enough or might not be able to wear it all the time, such an attitude might drive her away.

In Jordan, I wear the niqab in the downtown area (beled) b/c the men are ... not lowering the gaze, even if you wear jilbab and  hijab. I know it's *their* issue, but it makes me uncomfortable, so I wear it.  I've worn it a few other times as well.
