Help against Maronite Christian

Salamu' Alaikoum

Ramadan Mubarak first of all.

My name is ***, I am a university student in Montreal, Canada. I recently received this
email ( the one i have attached below ) from a Lebanese Christian maronite friend of mine,
I tried to explain to him that this not true especially since it's written by free
thinkers and Humanists ( = non believers) trying to corrupt Islam, and that our religion is
truly one of peace and tolerance. I also told him that one can not go on quoting verses from
the Quran without putting them into context. But i know that he's too stubborn and has
these false images about our faith ( the ones the media feeds him ), and unless i get him
some detailed explanations  he will fail to understand. Can you also make sure he
understands that we have no hatred against the Christians and the Jews because i think that no
matter what he doesn't understand, so maybe if it comes out of the mouth

I would seriously appreciate it if you could "dissect" the forward i attached below and
then send me what the Quran truly means in these verses, and refer to me where i can find
these proofs to explain it to him. I could even email him your reply straight away with
all your work or even meet him face to face.

Now brother i know this is very demanding, so if you want just explain to me and to him
what the first couple of verses mean ( also refering to the context they're in & where we
can find them ).
Your help would be very much appreciated as soon as possible, because the more i leave it
the more he will think that i'm trying to trick him or something.

Jazzaka Allah Khairan especially in this Holy month of Ramadan.

Bro/Sis I deleted the rest of your post because it's the usual orientalist/missionary garbage that the haters of Islam bring out. The fact that it's written by Salman Rusdie should tell you something. He is quite clearly one of those anti-islamists. Each of those things mentioned can be explained in depth with time and effort. But do you have the time and effort and knowledge to do that with your missionary friend? Will he change his views? Will he become Muslim?

It's my experience that missionaries never change. They might change their view on one thing when they can't fight you on it anymore but then they just move on to something else. They can always find something about Islam to argue about. How do you argue with someone who will take everything out of context and looks at everything in a western modern day vacuum without the whole system? And something to think about is that there _will_ be people who know everything about Islam correctly but still hate it.  So given the amount of work we need to do in Dawah should we be concentrating our efforts on hardcore missionaries? I hope not.

Anyway if you still decide to proceed, a good place to start is with some good Tafseer books ie Ibn Kathir and go from there InshaAllah.

I am rather shocked that anyone could say this  -- It sounds like you are trying to tell us that it is a waste of time to share Islam with certain people.  After all, who are we to decide who is 'worthy' of da'wah efforts and who is not?  I just recently met someone who was a devoutly religious Christian, who coverted to Islam after someone explained Islam to her in a truthful manner  (She had spent her life asking God to show her how to become closer to Him).  Allah (swt) can open anyone's heart to Islam, if he or she chooses to seek a relationship with him -- his or her background before finding Islam is irrelevant.

Please remember that most people only have easy access to mistaken information about Islam.  (Think of the article that was deleted, for instance, and many of the books in public libraries are no better).  It is always worthwhile to try to dispel any untruth that we may find about Islam.  We may not be successful in convincing everyone that Islam this the true path (after all, Muhammad  [saw] was not able to do so either), but at least we can content ourselves with the knowlege that we did not deliberately ignore the falsehoods being spread about Islam, nor deem anyone unworthy of being exposed to the message that our prophet  [saw] brought to us :  Allahu akbar. La ilaha illa huwa.

It's never a waste of time to share Islam with people. You never know who will hear the guidance. But what I am saying is that our priority shouldn't be in spending hours and hours trying to convince someone who is trained to argue with you and is not open to what you are saying. Once you give them the message and they understand it the rest is up to them.
