| salaam!! just curious on the state of the job market in california. any good jobs going in IT or is it just as bad as it is in UK? wasalaam |

| [slm] The job market in the IT field sucks in California, and its probably a lot worse then the UK. Other places in the US are better suited for IT like texas. |

| [slm] I concur with Bhaloo. IT situation is rotten here in California. It actually does make sense though because of the silicon valley, economy here isn't very diverse. I recommend looking for jobs in large companies that have been around for a while, and haven't had a track record of layoffs. In the UK try "Bank of Scotland", supposedly the 2nd largest bank in the UK? What kind of skills/experience base do you have? Kashif, any thoughts on this? |

| salaams Nah the situation in the UK is grim, don't bother coming here. The job market is quiet, my friend whos a contractor hasn't has employment for months. Other areas for work are now to become an IT teacher or research anlyst. | I believe the job market has improved slightly over the last month. This was after talking to friends who are graduating. Whereas in October they did not have any interviews, each has about 4 or 5 interviews lined up in December (now whether that translates into a job, allahua'lam). Incidentally, which fields in IT do the brothers/sisters here work in? Development/Consulting/Services? [wlm] --Zahid |

| [slm] I think all of you should quit. :-/ No in all seriousness, what a horrible to time to be looking for jobs or even to be employed in those fields: Those who don't have jobs, and then the rest of you who have minimal job security. I feel for alluh ya. May Allah make it easy on all of you. I hear they got some job openings at the ITU. Would be an interesting place to work. But unless you have a Masters, they won't give you a real job. And they'd probably make you trek down to central Africa or something. Good luck. SF. |

| [slm] Nah, nk need to quit the IT industry if you are working in it for the right reasons. Remember a lot of the ppl working in .COM were in it to make a quick buck, off of stocks or what have you. Unfortunatly the serious experienced ppl got lumped along with those ppl and ended up in the firing process. Also IT field is very vast, there are many niche sub industries that you can get into within the IT field. BroHanif, as for working for a bank I don't know what the hukm would be considering that you would be working on their computer systems and not on the money persay, Wa Allahu Alaam. I think there's a difference in working for a bank as a finance investment banker, versus a systems engineer designing their systems/software. |

So how can one say that if I work in one area it will be hallal and haraam in the other. You can't thats why most of the scholars that I have spoken to have said avoid working in that area. Another example, would you desing an online pornograpihc web site ??? No you wouldn't. Sure you woudn't get to meet the models but helping them promote their site via ones IT knowledege as a Muslim would not be acceptable to me. salams Hanif |
