put your thinking caps on!!

okay, I have been holding off on posting this for months now, but now the
                     time is right.

For my exam project in college I have to make a short film from 2.5 to 4
minutes long. It can be about anything. I have decided to do something on
Islam. The only problem is - 4 minutes is waaay to short :o

What I have set up is a german revert woman who is willing to be interviewed.
I'll also have no problem (I think!) on getting someone to recite Qur'an,
pray, have little kids recite Qur'an...

My problem is, what topic should I choose that I can present in 4 minutes?
I was thinking of going along the "breaking stereotypes" kind of thing.
Where I have the revert saying how women in Islam have so many rights etc
and that Islam is basically totally misunderstood.
I think 4 minutes is way too short to do anything else eg the five pillars
of Islam, or a good general introduction to Islam..

So what do you people think? I really need some feedback here. My concept
(including list of required equipment and basic outline of film) has to
be in by January 14th. :o

And also, is there a problem with filming in a mosque?

                     TIA

*note: I tried many times to post this in the Kabob folder but it wouldn't let me open a new thread...

Sounds like oh-so-much fun.  Maybe once you're done, you can put it up on the net, and we'll all have a look-see.

What would be really nice is if you do something different.  I love the children idea.  Maybe you can go with that, and interview little kids asking them about A specific topic in Islam.  Something non-controversial maybe.

Whatever you decide, I really wanna see it.  :)

I dont understand much as I get it..Is this film for muslims? If not, you can try to explain why muslimwomen wear hijab or so with the ayah of quran. The kids to use is not good idea against non muslim adult public. Because they could say, kids has to obey the parents or so..BTW: the film is in german language? [wlm]

You could use the kids and interview  them about what islam says about respecting elders.......about the status of parents...quoting ahadeeth etc.
I'm sure adults esp. moms would be very interested and happy to hear what islam has to say about that ;D ;).......
All adults like to hear such things :-/

thanks for the replies.. :)

the film is for a non-Muslim audience intially, but the Muslimah who I will be interviewing wants a copy of it for her mosque and dawah center.

Islam has a very bad reputation in Germany. I think my main mission is to try to undo some of that by showing positive examples of modern day Muslims.

It will be in German with english subtitles.

I saw this ad for animal rights that I really like.  The concept is myth versus reality.  The one abt sharks is good.  The said Myth : Man eating animal  Fact : Eaten by Man.

So maybe u can do a montage of myths and fiction.  Eg Myth 1 : Show a cowering and submissive Hijabi Fact 1 : Get a Hijabi Doctor.  Myth 2 : Muslims are unfriendly and hostile.  Fact 2 : Show Muslim family welcoming non-Muslim guests into their home etc.  Best part is...u need minimal scripting heh heh.

Do I make sense ? If not..umm..thats normal  ;D

yeah.. that is a good idea.. only problem - I need to rethink my whole concept and get people to co-operate. I was thinking more along the lines of a straightforward interview, with insert scenes of mosque, prayer, Qur'an etc. It's easier to do and easier for the "straight thinking" Germans to understand  :P

as salaamu alaykum,

Four minutes is about the time of a commercial.. I don't know what resources you have at your disposal, but I think it would be sooo cool if you imitated the 'I am Tiger Woods' nike commercial.. with Muslim women of different ethnicities, backgrounds, ages, etc wearing different cultural outfits and styles.. and each of them looking directly at the camera introducing themselves..

"I am Saira Khan, 22 years old, a third year resident at Westland Medical University, and I am a Muslim woman."

"My name Leena Ramason,  I'm 15 years old, a junior in highschool, and I am a Muslim woman."

"I am Aliya Chaudhry, a litigator with Madison & Smith, and I am a Muslim woman."

"I am Tasha Johnson, 32, a stay at home mom, and I am a Muslim woman."

"I am Mariam Khan, 58, a retired elemetary school teacher, and I am a Muslim woman."

*voice over*:  700 million women throughout the world practice the religion of Islam.  Veiled in mystery, Islam is the second largest religion in the world and the most widely misunderstood.  What draws women to this faith?  Why do more women convert to Islam than any other religion?  Join us on a 2 minute journey into the world of... Islam & Women."

hehe.. sorry, I'm a bit hiper :)  too much  []

hope your project goes well inshaAllah.. let us know what u decide to do!!

wasalaamu alaykum :-)

I commend you for your efforts, and I don't know how to put my suggestion in such a way that it doesn't sound bad.  I always sucked at being verbally tactful.

Perhaps something involving men as well?  Most people get scared of the big beard thing, and the stereotype, in my opinion, of muslims as terrorists has to change wayyyy before muslim women as oppressed, although one can argue that through one, the other will come.

As well, although as muslims we come from many different opinions and interpretations, something we have to recognize and cater for, do you think that showing women and have them talking at length, even covered, might be a slight bit immodest?  For dawah, it sounds cool, but concern is there.  Perhaps consult a scholar to stay on the right track.  Remember the non-muslims see Islam EXACTLY how we portray it, so perhaps we should watch every last way we express it, and make sure, however we do it, that Allah SWT is pleased totally.  I just think back to an Oprah episode on Islam that crossed some limits and misrepresented true Islam.  I am sure as a filmmaker, you'll do fine Insha'Allah.

My advice is just a suggestion from what I felt, but some sisters might take it as an affront- I hope I don't have to start running now.

personally i loved se7en's idea, with the "I am..." deal.  It's very creative, and fits well into the 4 minute limit you have.  Focusing on women in Islam would be a good idea i think just because it is such a misunderstood issue.  i just think it would be a lot easier to be able to focus in on one main issue and throw in as much detail as you can, rather than trying to represent a more general picture.  jsut a thought, but whatever you come up with i'm sure will turn out great insha'Allah ;D.  May Allah reward you for your efforts!
