[slm] So Al-Basha has convinced me to go with a TI-4200 - 64mb AGP GEForce 4 graphics card, but what about systems. I was looking at processor pricing and looks like AMD 2100 is the way to go, but what aobut motherboards? There are so many different ones out there and all these confusing memory models, DDR2100, DDR 3200, ack, its confusing. |

[wlm] Well I would go with a SOYO or an MSI for AMD cpu's. I personally have an MSI K7 Turbo, nice simple motherboard supporting up to 1.5Ghz with AGP, 5 pci onboard sound, usb 1.1. The newer mboards come with a slew of features like onboard RAID level 0 and 0 + 1 USB 2.0 10/100baseT onboard AGP 8X DDR 400 ram slots UDMA 133 controllers Really depends on how much you want to spend, but like I said stick with SOYO or MSI and you can't go wrong. DDR has gone through 3 or 4 iterations of speed, the highest being DDR400 (also most expensive in the DDR line). I'd recommend getting an mboard with DDR400 that way you can purchase slower DDR ram and then when DDR400 goes down in price you can upgrade. CPU wise, the Ahtlon 2100+ is fine. |

Assalamu Alaikum, From what little I've read it appears to me that beyond the 1 Ghz range, intel has scored higher on benchmarks than AMD (how significant this is, I don't know), although I do not know about prices. Also from the basics that I know there are 3 types of RAM and each type pf RAM had its different motherboards. They are SD, DDR and RD RAM in ascending order of speed (ie. SD is the slowest and cheapest etc.). What you decide to buy depends on what you plan on using the PC for. But SD is the mainstream (at least here in Pak) and should do most of what you throw at it. But DDR is a good balance between price and performance. RD is just raw power but pretty pricy. (AMD probably has similar configurations.) I've seen people who have bought 128MB DDR and they are getting along just fine (although I think you should have 256 MB). Personally, I recently got a new PC and asked for 512 MB RDRAM on an Intel 850EMV2 motherboard (2.0 GHz processor). Al-Hamdulillah, it hasn't given me any problems yet. Coincidentally, I also bought a GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB. I bought the one branded by Leadtek Winfast (9/10 Review.com) and, Al-Hamdulillah, it is going good as well. |
