Wait question:  Does this have to with swimming?  So you swim in Shalwar Kameez?

1...Explain crazy ideas: it could go either way.  Do they have a problem with you wearing too much or too little?

2...I dunno the rulings..maybe someone could help....but I heard that women must cover mid thigh to waist in front of other women.  And yeah I know, I get uncomfortable too....like sometimes at these all-sisters parties...it gets really awkward.  but I think that's just me, because there isn't anything wrong with it.

Wasalaam...

I have always understood that a woman's awrah in front of other women is from the navel to the knees.  In front of mahrams, the scholars disagree -- some say the same as in front of women, others say only the head and arms uncovered, others ......  (I won't continue the list -- I'll give you a link instead: The Rules of Modesty According to Five Islamic Schools of Law)  I'm not sure how reliable the author of this article is, but I figured the since he's only describing what other scholars have said, the article is probably ok.

As for swimming, the other day, I found a site that apparently sells swimsuits for Muslim women.  Unfortunately, it's in Turkish, and I can't read it.  :'( The web site is : http://www.hasema.com.  If you click on the cross in the upper left part of the screen, you get a selection of outfits available -- all with matching hijabs!!  (Even so, I think that the choice of fabrics is still a bit too flamboyant -- #1307 is the most subdued of the bunch!)  Can any of you imagine wearing this in public?  Unless there were a whole lot of other women dressed this way at the beach, I would feel a little too conspicuous.

Whenever I do go swimming, which isn't too often, I have a pair of nylon pants that I wear over my swimsuit -- they're actually meant for people who go canoeing.  They're great, because the nylon doesn't absorb much water, and isn't as close-fitting as leggings, even when wet.  For those of you in Canada, they can be found here.

BTW sis Anonymous, I hadn't thought of swimming in a Shalwar Kameez, but I think it's a good idea.  :)

Sorry I did write something about the problems with sisters in the context of
swimming...cept it seems I lost it in the process of posting! ;D Sorry...

Yes I have tried in a shalwar kameez...not that good an idea ;) Might give up swimming
altogether with these other sisters...I dont know...they definitely don't cover navel to
knee...and I dont plan to be wearing those outfits Leslie!  But they were amusing so jk ;D

Umm...SF's question..."crazy ideas" - ie on the one hand, my dad doesnt like me to wear
baggy stuff cos he says I look like a "tramp" (in the old sense of the word).  But if its
smart clothes then thats "shameless".  If I wear shalwar kameez I'm fat...but passable.
Except I dont have many shalwar kameezes nor can I be bothered to iron them every time I
wear them (if I don't I'm a "tramp" again!)  Then theres my bro who says I dress like a
"grunger", a "granny" and a member of the Taleban all in one!  And the rest of my family
have different ideas...(sigh) And I'm not even going to start on the hair/makeup
issues...the maintenance is too much!  Bear in mind this in INSIDE the house...

Note that none of them base their opinions on any Islamic rulings...it's just
culture/personal preference/etc...I just wanted to know what exactly I'm SUPPOSED to do...will have
speak to a knowledgeable person about it I think...(it's just that they take aaages to
get back to you)

Jk anyways.
