Who can wear a Hijab?

Hello,

I am not a muslim, however I belive in the modesty of women and I admire the hijab worn by muslim women.  I am a Christian and I want to begin wearing a hijab, would that be offensive or dishonoring to muslims?

I think its really cool that you are considering to wear Hijaab although you aren't Muslim. May God continue to guide your heart (Amin). In Christianity and Judaism, women are also encouraged to cover their heads, so I don't see any problems with it.
You might get a few questions about being Muslim and stuff, but i'm sure you can handle it ;)
Take care,
Sis,
Maliha  :-)

Hi!
I agree with Sis Maliha,I think you should go ahead with the hijab idea.Is not Mary nearly always depicted with a covering over her hair? Here in our country it is a common practise of the older African women to cover their hair even though majority are not Muslim.May God make it easy!

Salam,

wow Sis. Zahra, Ive never considered that before...your right most pictures that depict Mary do have her head covered...in fact all the biblical characters have full robe clothing...hmm. That is so suprising for me, i don't know why, just b/c  i have never considered it before.

I think it would be great Sister if you wore hijab, if you believe strongly in women dressing modestly!

The fact that Mary is always covered and other biblical characters may be useful in explaining to other people the reasoning behind hijaab. Sometimes even with the explantions i give other people they find it extermely difficult to understand. It may help asking them why Mary and other characters are always covered in pictures.

I think that's really admirable. I also think it takes a strong woman to be able to wear the hijab!
Anyways, I saw a program that there are orthodox Christian women from Syria who do wear the head veil because Mary (raa) had worn it.

Masha Allah!!! I never thought I'd hear this, but I am impressed. I don't think that we have any 'copyrights' on the hijab so everyone and anyone wanting to wear it has the right to do so. I think that being a woman gives it to you.
I just hope tthat you will find it easy in this day and age to be likened to a muslim.
Best of luck
Rameeza

P.S. I hope that many of our sisters who have not worn hijab yet will be inspired by this lady.

Hi,

CAIR ,(an muslim/human rights advocacy group), once sued on behalf of a christian woman who worked as a bus driver and wanted to wear a head scarf but the school district wouldn't allow her to.

she said that the Bible says that women should cover their hair. (and i looked it up in the Bible and it did say that). so all the power to you!   :-*

Peace, theLordshandmaiden
(btw, the translation of that into Arabic is a common Muslim name = Amatullah)

That's beautiful that you're considering wearing the headscarf, as I'm pretty sure it's practiced within all the major Abrahamic traditions (maybe less so now with non-Muslims). Go with your heart. Modesty is a part of faith. We didn't actually come up with it (as mentioned, earlier people of faith wore the scarf, as well).   :)

"(Remember) when the angels said: "O Mary! Verily, God gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honour in this world and the Hereafter, and will be one of those nearest to God." (translation of the Qur'aan, Surah Al-Imran 3:45)

I live in Kenya (East Africa) where lots of women wear headscarfs.  Not headscarfs are not necessarily hijab but the cover the hear completely hence is considered dressing modestly.

Most of these women are Christians and they go about their daily life with no problem.

I hope you will feel good after trying the hijab.  Be couragous and go ahead.

All the best.

God Bless each of you who have given me so much encouragement.  I am excited and so is my husband.  He is supportive of my choice to cover with the Hijaab and Kameez.  I admire all Muslim women who are not ashamed to declare allegence to their belief without fear.

Amatullah
Thank you sister for that :-)

Dear Sis Handmaiden

Islam is not a religion.  It is a way of life.  It is a call for the soul.  It is universal and it is not grounded in time.  Islam is not equal to Arabisation.  It is equal to the perfect path for humankind.  All humankind.  Thus, its teachings offer nothing but good for everyone, including covering up.

I will make a special du'a that u will be strong in your efforts and may u be protected and enriched by this act.

Peace.

Handmaiden:

As you know, covering is part of your own tradition, and is mentioned several places in the Bible (NT and OT from what I understand).  It is b/c of this that Christian women covered for centuries, and why women of the Amish / Mennonites / Hudderites and other traditions (some Orthodox, some Born Again) cover.  In fact, there are Christian women's headcovering businesses on the 'net, and resource centers, as well as a few e-mail groups (there is one for Christian women only, on the page below, and there is another for Jewish, Muslim, and Christian women on Yahoo! I think it is called "Covered Women for God" or something like that)

Christian Women's Headcovering Directory

I've seen several Christian women covering in the US.  :)

i too think it's great that you want to wear the hijab Sis Maiden... mashallah you really are an inspiration to all of our sisters that are contemplating wearing it as well.  I really think hijab is a great liberation for all women, regardless of what your belief is.  Its benefits are endless, and as you wear it you will discover them and enjoy them as well.  Inshallah I hope God will guide you and give you the strength to follow your heart!
