Legacy of a Prophet: The story behind the movie
By a Unity Productions staffer

I would like, to share with you a little background of this wonderful project, how this movie became a reality. Michael Wolfe and Alex Kronemer, two American producers, in 1998, were on the same flight, from Saudi Arabia to New York, after attending a conference there. As faith had destined, they were sitting next to each other, on this flight. Alex was telling Michael about this person, who had written those beautiful books on Hajj and Michael told him, that he was that person. Discovering a common interest, the whole idea began to take a course, on which we all find ourselves today.

Our beloved Prophet, (PUBH), was very misunderstood, by the people outside our faith, so Alex proposed his idea to Michael, to produce a documentary on Prophet's life, as an answer to a strong and growing need, for presenting accurate information, about our Prophet and his teachings to the West. Then they contacted Dr. Shakeela Hassan, who is a Pakistani, living in Chicago in April 1999, with the idea of producing, this documentary on Prophet Muhammad,(PBUH).

In April, of this year, we had a fundraiser in Houston and had the pleasure of meeting Michael Wolfe, Alex Kronemer and Dr Shakeela Hassan.

Alex Kronemer is a writer and lecturer on religion and Islamic civilization.

He is a frequent speaker on religious diversity, Islamic awareness and cross-cultural understanding. He has a master's degree in Theological Studies from Harvard University where his research concentrated on the philosophy of religion and comparative religion. He is the co-founder of Unity Productions Foundation and co-creator and producer, of Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet.

In April, 1998, Alex acted, as a consultant and on-air commentator, in Makkah for CNN-TV News, during its week of live-broadcast coverage on Hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage with Riz Khan.

Michael Wolfe is an author and has published many books about Islam. Just to name a few are The Hadj: An American's Pilgrimage to Mecca (1993); and One Thousand Roads to Mecca.

Wolfe's work on Islam, has been widely reviewed, in the mainstream press, in Western Academic journals, and among Muslim scholars too.

In 1997, Wolfe wrote and narrated, a special televised Hajj report, from Makkah for ABC Nightline program by Ted Koppel.

Both Alex and Michael have become Muslims.

Dr. Shakeela Hassan, served her internship at Northwestern University and from 1961 onwards, was an anesthesiologist on the faculty, at the University of Chicago and now she is an Associate Professor Emeritus, at the University.

After reading, and seeing their work presented on television in April 1999,she agreed to serve, on this board, as their Fundraising Chairperson for this film.

Before accepting this position, she asked only one question, who will be acting the Prophet's part and Michael's spontaneous answer to that was, there shall be no actors or reenactments, Shakeela's answer was yes and she joined hands with them. On November 1, 1999 Unity Productions Foundation, came into existence as a non-profit corporation.

The mission, of this project is, to develop a balanced, fair and accurate journalistic material concerning the world's cultural and spiritual traditions of Muslims in order to help increase, understanding and tolerance. At the present time Muslims live in 120 countries in the world and in America we have Muslims from 80 countries.

Our hope, is to share an accurate information, about our beloved Prophet Muhammad, PBUH, and understand the impact of the teachings of Islam, as it is alive today, in our daily living in these contemporary times.

She went from state to state and after visiting forty states, with four thousand donors, she has successfully been able to raise, $3.7 million for this project.

Now you have heard, the great work, of these three wonderful people, who took this bold lead to make this movie a reality. Now it is our turn to join Unity Productions ‘Circle of Friends’, and spread the word in our communities, schools and Islamic Centers.

The message in this movie, is the Prophet's biography, combined by historical material, with the words and stories, of contemporary American Muslims. This will be of interest to a large viewing audience. I need your help in spreading the word, so please join us, to pass this message to as many people as possible.

Lets make it a great success, by getting the highest rating. The movie is aired on Dec 18 on PBS, which is Channel 8, 26, 22 at 8.00 pm. This movie is going to be shown on primetime, on 353 PBS Television stations all over the United States.

Thank you and may Allah's Blessing be upon you.

CAIR ACTION ALERT #356

NETWORK PRESSURED OVER POSITIVE PORTRAYAL OF MUHAMMAD
"Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet" Airs Tonight on PBS

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/18/02) - CAIR has learned that PBS is receiving
heavy
pressure from those who object to the positive portrayal of the Prophet
Muhammad in the documentary, "Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet," to be
broadcast beginning tonight on that network.

American Muslims and other people of conscience are asked to contact the
network to offer thanks for the decision to air the program and to urge
that PBS not buckle under the pressure being exerted by bigots and
Islamophobes.

A San Francisco Chronicle review of the documentary called it "riveting,
informative and inspiring." The reviewer said: "Muhammad: Legacy of a
Prophet" should almost be required viewing for non-Muslims. It sets the
record straight about a man who has been demonized by those who know
little
to nothing about the substance of his life or his message. And it makes
clear that Islam is a peaceful religion followed by people who are devoted

to faith and helping others, even if some adherents (such as Osama bin
Laden) distort its teachings..."

On the other hand, in yesterday's New York Post, Muslim-basher Daniel
Pipes
suggested that the network be sued for its positive portrayal of the
Prophet.

This is a letter from Dr.  Umar Farouq Abdullah (Chairman of Imam Nawawi Foundation) that was posted on another message board.

Our Dear Sisters and Brothers, as-Salaamu 'alaykum
wa Rahmat-Allah.

May you all be well. I am sure you will be watching
tomorrow night December 18th at 9:00 p.m. (Chicago
time) the PBS documentary, Muhammad: Legacy of a
Prophet. I have had the good fortune of previewing
sections of it and found it an excellent contribution,
which I am looking forward to watching in its entirety
tomorrow.

But I would like to urge each of us to write a sincere
word of gratitude to PBS after viewing the film.
Their e-mail address is www@pbs.org

Tremendous sacrifice has gone into this production,
and, as you know, it is important that PBS receive our
positive feedback. It would be unfortunate if our
community were to take such a major broadcasting event
for granted and make little or no response. We must be
wary that there may be among us certain short-sighted
fault-finders who will be offended at the slightest
shortcoming here or there in the documentary and
protest unjudiciously to PBS. Also, we can be sure
that there will be elements of the broader American
society that will voice vehement protest to PBS for
airing such a "pro-Islamic" educational program. With
these points in mind, it becomes all the more pressing
and, in fact, civicly binding that we voice our
support and appreciation to PBS so that in the future
our voices may be taken more seriously.

With highest regards to all,

Dr. Umar F. Abd-Allah

Hello all,

this thread has made me wonder: is it a tenet of Islam that Muhammed (pbuh) was a "perfect" person after he became a prophet or are there incidences of the human struggles still in him (lust envy greed etc.)? Just curious.

Thanks!

It is a part of the tenets of Islam to believe that the prophets are masoom (free of vices).  The principle is as follows (and is concurred by most of the ulema):

Hasnaatul Abraar, Sayyiatul muqarabeen.
The virtuous deeds of the pious are considered "sins" by those who are nearest to God.

For e.g.   Adam did not commit a sin, per say, relative to a common perception of sin.  People with high ranks such as the ambiya (prophets) are expected to live by extremely high standards.  Another e.g. would be of the prophet Muhammad (saw) when he overlooked (not intentionally of course) a poor blind man.....refer to the Tafseer of Surah 'Abasa .  May be others can expound on this subject.

Jazaakallah.

Wasalaam.
At the bottom of the applet there is a text box where you can write any text you want to say to the current channel or query window. You can pick up a certain color from 16 different colors of the colored stripe, or let the applet chose a random/highlight/gradient text from the Drop Down list. You can also set the text to be bold and/or underlined by pressing the "B" and the "U" buttons respectively. when your done editing your text click on the "Send" button (the one with the lips icon) or just press ENTER in order to send your text.
You can also send Action/Emotions lines by choosing it from the right bottom Drop Down list, above the "send emotion" title.

Re: [FAQ]  C H A T:  Long awaited, Long debated
trying to do da'wah (invite to Islam) with an influential Qurayshi leader. Allah immediately corrected him and told him not to worry so much about those who may or may not listen to the call of Islam (regardless of their status), as much as he should worry about answering the needs of someone who actually wants to learn about Islam. Had the Prophet (s) or any of his followers had the ability to, these verses of the Qur'aan would probably have been removed from the Qur'aan, but alhamdulillah, the Qur'aan is protected, and cannot be changed, by Allah's will. The Prophet (s) immediately understood his fault, and continued to repent for it long after. From that, he always addressed the blind man with a special title, something like, the One regarding whom I was reprimanded by Allah. This was his humility, salAllahu 'alayhi was-sallam. And look at the love of God for the Prophet (s), his name was not even mentioned when he was reprimanded, as he was deeply ashamed of any mistakes he made before God. SubhanAllah.

I think my point is, may Allah forgive me if I'm wrong, is that no one other than the Prophets were "protected" in this way by God (being corrected on the spot). Meaning, they had to uphold proper, righteous conduct, since they were the examples to follow for mankind.

Again, true perfection is in Allah and the Prophets were human. We do not elevate them to the level of God, nor do we worship the Prophets. We also do not believe they did anything that would tarnish their reputation, or the "reputation" of God, or the reputation of the message they were sent with. May peace be upon them.

Allahu'Alim. God knows best.
