I think that according to some fatwa i read by shaikh Qardawi that doing cartoons and drawing with the purpose of dawah and education for the kids is permissible, but did anyone ever read anything about depicting prophets in these things??

This is not an answer to your fatwa question, but an experience I had:

I wrote a series of "books" for my son about each individual Prophet. At the time he was 4/5 years old and I added pictures.

What I did was put a picture in of an Arab man with a washed out face and explained to my son that this is not what Prophet .... looked like but may have dressed similairly.

I also tried to get back shots to avoid the faces. Most of the time I avoided it if I could get a good 'symbolistic' picture.

from what I have learned and understood, there are three levels of opinion that I came across:

1. Depiction of the Prophets AS is forbidden

2. Depiction of the Prophets AS and the Sahaba RA is forbidden

3. Depiction of anything animate is forbidden

This is discluding toys for children, but it must be stopped as soon as they reach an age of understanding.

I personally would try to adhere to the 3rd one, that no one is to be depicted.  It is an insult to the Prophets AS when we attempt to say how they looked and false practices could come out of that.  As for your son, I am no scholar, so Allahu Alam, but I would think it was commendable that you took the faces out and explained very clearly to him that you were not depicted prophets AS but just a mode of dress. Allahu Alam, may He forgive me if I said something wrong.
