REVIEW- Frontline : Muslims

[slm],

I just wanted to start a thread on a program PBS had today of Frontline: Muslims. What did you guys think? I watched it with my folks and sisters and litt'l bro. It was interesting for me because I never really have had a glimpse of different Muslim countries like Malaysia, Turkey and Nigeria. I don't know how accuarte it was but it definatley covered the struggles Muslims are having in different places. I found the Malaysian's ladies struggle to get a divorce really frustrasting. The Muslim court there I think has some things they need to look over.

I think Frontline gave a good impression of Muslims, and maybe some people won't agree, b/c it focused more on different muslim nations that many people have not seen. It gave good explantions on different Islamic principles and showed how Muslims are struggling to make Islamic States the right way. I did have problems with the continual comments on how Muslim Women do not have to wear hijaab by some of the muslim women portrayed.

Overall I would say it was not the best, but it did try to give a glimpse at the struggles of Muslims in other countries.

Tell me about it.

Half the trouble non-muslims have with the hijab, is because so many of their muslim friends insist it is absolutely unnecessary.

I agree! When I heard that woman telling the students hijab is not obligatory in Islam my jaw just dropped! She mentioned that people shouldn't underestimate a muslimah's knowledge in Islam if they're not veiled but at the same time she shouldn't give the students the impression that she's a scholar. Oh well. But out of curiousity, what daleel do these women have that it isn't? ( other than that the show was great! )

I think what they say is that it is all in the interpretation.  Of course, they are relying on their limited interpretation.  If they were to pick up any of the books of tafsir (from any prominent mufassireen such as Qurtubi), they will not be in misguidance.  So, I think it is a case of not being exposed to the tafseer of the ayats of Ahkam (regal rulings) in the Quran.

[slm],

I think it was a good program. I was very impressed by the doctor sister in Malaysia. Did they show anyone from Indian subcontinent? I started watching a bit late. I am totally convinced that there are good muslims around the world in every nook and corner and I dont agree with a lot of assessment by some people who say Islam will rise from this place or that place, I think it will rise from all over at the same time!
