| [slm] Russia opposes attempts to create global Islamic state - Putin uploaded 22 Dec 2002 Russia's fight against international terrorism in Chechnya has become part of the world's resistance to attempts to create a global Islamic state, said Russian President Vladimir Putin. "This idea, a sick idea, is no different from the one once used by the fascists," he said. He made these comments during a live broadcast on several television and radio channels. "These are criminal elements, with whom we should be tough and consistent," he said. Speaking about the reasons for Islamists' attention to Russia, Putin said: "Firstly, there are a considerable number of Muslims living close to each other, and they thought they could simply fool those people. Secondly, until recently they believed that Moscow, at least in the early and mid-1990s, that Russia was easy prey and they could take the first step towards realizing their goal here." "They not only want to create a caliphate on the territory of Russia, they want to create a global caliphate.
