| [code]Get a Whiff of This. You'll Sleep Better Jasmine! New research suggests that people who breathe in the soothing smells of jasmine all night long will sleep better than others. Can aromatherapy actually cure insomnia? Reuters reports that researchers from Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia created just such a test for jasmine and lavender. Previous research has shown these two scents can help people relax, feel less anxious, and improve their spirits, all of which presumably would help them sleep better. The researchers monitored the sleep of 20 volunteers over three nights. Reuters reports that their sleeping quarters were infused each night with the faint odor of jasmine, lavender, or no scent. The added aroma was so minute that some of the participants couldn't even detect it. The hands-down winner was jasmine. While they were sleeping in the jasmine-infused room, "we found they were just laying there, as opposed to tossing and turning," lead researcher Dr. Bryan Raudenbush told Reuters. Not so with the lavender. In addition to sleeping more peacefully when the room was infused with jasmine, the participants said they were more alert in the afternoon and reported feeling less anxiety when they woke up in the morning. So WHY does jasmine soothe us into a more productive sleep? Raudenbush theorizes that as jasmine improves a person's mood, it actually causes physical changes in the body. Since you probably can't infuse your bedroom with jasmine, Raudenbush suggests using a jasmine-scented soap before bed or placing jasmine potpourri around the house. [/code] |
