hand movements in salaah

salaamu alaikum

I was wondering after the intial takbir [saying Allahu Akbar while
raising our hands] in the prayer, do we raise our hands after that at all
before ending the salaah.  I see some people do it before going down for
ruku' and sujood while others don't.  Is this something that is sunnah
or fard or is there a diff of oppinion in the schools of thought?  And
what's the significance behind the hand movements?

thank you

walikum assalam
well its  called rafaidain  , that is people raise their hands before
and  after ruku there are a number of a hadith which  relate this aspect of salath and i think the three madhabds adopt it
but according to the  hanfiya school of thought they dont consider
it as a  part of salath and they have thier own reasons for that

So my advice is do what you feel you ought to
do it in the light of quraan and  sunnah
But never miss a salath thats the  most important thing

I personally ascribe to the Maliki Madhab, and I raise my hands with each takbir, except those while sitting.  It helps me to concentrate my hearing, sight, and attention on the Qibla and my salaat, for each time I raise my hands, it closes off those things to my left and right in my field of vision, it muffs any noise that may be bouncing my direction (as I live in the city), and it arrests my focus in understanding that there is nothing greater than Allah SWT or more worthy of my attention at that time of all times.

Insha'Allah....

Here are some ahadith regarding raising the hands:

Book 3, Number 3.5.17:

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Salim ibn Abdullah from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messengerof Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to raise his hands to the level of his shoulders when he began the prayer and when he raised his head from the ruku he raised them in the same way, saying, "Allah hears whoever praises him, our Lord and praise belongs to You." He did not raise them in the sujud.

Book 3, Number 3.5.19:

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Sa'id from Sulayman ibn Yasar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to raise his hands in the prayer.

Book 3, Number 3.5.21:

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Salim ibn Abdullah that Abdullah ibn Umar used to say "Allah is greater" in the prayer whenever he lowered himself and raised himself.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to raise his hands to the level of his shoulders when he began the prayer and when he raised his head from the ruku he would raise them less than that.

I have actually had an imam discourage me that I should not raise my hands in the salaat, but certainly all truth rests with Allah SWT alone, and I do not reject what is clear to me from where the scholars themselves take from.

It appears agreed upon though, not to raise the hands in sujud for takbir.  I would warn against being confused however by people who may be ailing and sitting for the salaat, as it may appear they are raising the hands for sujud, but in fact are not.

Insha'Allah, may Allah SWT guide you and make you comfortable in your salaat, and may Allah SWT be well pleased with you in your concern to adapt any sunnah.

Regards,

QAK

Wa alaykum as salaam, the question you posed is more of a hadeeth issue (i.e. as to the authenticity of the hadeeth regarding this topic) than that of differences of opinion amongst the fuqaha. First of all what has authentically been reported on behalf of the messenger (sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam) as narrated by ibn Umar who said:

"I saw the Messenger of Allaah (SAW) raise his hands up to his shoulders when he started the prayer, and when he went into ruku` and when he raised his head from ruku', and the son of ibn Umar added in his hadeeth, 'and he did not do that between the two sajdas", and in another narration related by Al Bukhari "When he (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) stood from the sitting position,he (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) would raise his hands with this takbeer sometimes"

So that makes it 4 times during the salah we raise our hands:
1. At the beginning takbir, which you all the madhaahib agree too,
2. When you are about to make ruku,
3. When rasing from ruku, and
4. When raising up from the first tashahud, (and the last 3 instances is where the differences comes in)

Hence, you find imam Bukhari wrote a whole book with many narrations called "Raf'al Yadayn fee salah" in refutation against those who do not see it as part of the sunnah to raise ones' hand the the places aforementioned. This is to such an extent that al-Haafidh (ibn Hajr) says in ‘al-Fath’, "Bukhaaree mentioned that raising of the hands at ruku` and at rising from ruku` is related from seventeen of the Sahaabah. Al-Haakim and Abu al-Qaasim ibn Mandah mention that from amongst the ones who narrate it are the ten promised paradise. And our shaikh Abu al-Fadl al-Haafidh (i.e. al-Iraaqee) mentioned that he investigated the narrations from the Sahaabah and they reached fifty (Sahaabah)." And as-Suyuti said in ‘al-Azhaar al-Mutanaathira fee al-Akhbaar al-Mutawaatira’, "the ahaadeeth of raising (hands at ruku) are mutawaatir from the Prophet (SAW)".

So, inshallah this should be sufficient evidence to convince one as to what the sunnah is in this situation. However, there still remains one very important question: how come is it that many people do not raise their hand in these mentioned instances?
Well, the strongest proof the have to support this position is the hadeeth of Azib and ibn Masood. As for the hadeeth of Azib that is found in the sunan of Abu Dawud, he said, "I saw the Messenger of Allaah (SAW) when he started the prayer raise his hands to near his ears, then he did not repeat that."

Related by Abu Dawood and ad-Daaruqutnee and it is from the narration of Yazeed bin Abu Zaid from Abdur Rahmaan bin Abu Layla from him (i.e. Baraa`). The Hadeeth Masters (Huffaadh) have agreed that his saying, "then he did not repeat that" is mudraj i.e. this last part of the hadeeth is what Yazeed added to it". Thus, scholar such as  Uthmaan ad-Daarimee said, reporting from Imaam Ahmad, "it is not authentic", and likewise al-Bukhaaree, Ahmad, Yahya ad-Daarimee and al-Humaidee declared it da`eef.

As for the hadeeth of ibn Masood that is narrated by At Tirmidhee and which is more known: ‘ibn Mas`ud said, "shall I not pray with you the prayer of the Messenger of Allaah (SAW)" so he prayed and he did not raise his hands except the first time.’. Many scholars declared this hadeeth to be weak, al-Haafidh ibn Hajr said in ‘at-Talkhees’, Ibn al-Mubaarak said, ‘it is not established with me.’ Ibn Abee Haatim said from his father that ‘this hadeeth is a mistake’. Ahmad bin Hanbal and his shaykh Yahya bin Aadam said, ‘it is da`eef’, and al-Bukhaaree quoted this from them and followed them in their verdict. Abu Daawood said that ‘it is not authentic.’ Ad-Daaruqutnee said, ‘it is not established’. Ibn Hibbaan said in ‘as-Salaah’, ‘this is the best narration that the people of Kufah narrate with regards to negating raising the hands in prayer at the ruku` and at rising from it, and it is in reality the weakest thing to depend on, because it has defects that invalidate it’"
So with all of this it is established that the hadeeth of ibn Mas`ud is da`eef and the likes of it is not used as proof. Imaam ash-Shaafi`ee said, "it is not permissible for anyone who hears the hadeeth of the Messenger of Allaah (SAW) to do with raising the hands at the commencement of prayer and at going into and rising from ruku`, that he leaves emulating his actions (SAW)"

Thus, this should inshallah help to direct to that which is closest to the sunnah. Know that however raising the hands is not fard except for the first takbeer and the all the others ar "sunnah", but one should always try do do them thoughout his salah for as ibn Jubair said "It is the thing the beautifies your salah". Some scholars have even said is from the distinguishing signs of the people of the sunnah. I tried to keep it as simple as possible, inshallah this may be of benefit and Allah knows best.
