Salatul Istikhara

I was wondering about Salatul Istikhara. After you have done it, how do you know if you get a "positive response" or a "negative response"? Does it come in a dream, or is it a kind of inclination or feeling that you get towards one choice or the other? I ask this b/c I prayed istikhara last night, but so far, I don't feel like I've gotten a sign. Is the lack of a response the same thing as a negative response? I made sure to not already have any biases in my feelings toward one choice or the other as I made istikhara- I tried to be receptive to whatever Allah was going to tell me.

So what should I do? Keep waiting? Pray it again?

jazakallah khair :)

Inshaallah you should wait a couple of more days, maybe a week or two.

Scholars have said that it can be either one or the other.  Personally, the last time I prayed Istikhara, my answer was given in a dream 3 days later.

Assalaamu alaikum,

You should continue doing istikhaara until you have gone through with the decision. You are asking Allah swt for guidance, so whatever decision that you make, which is by Allah's help, would be the right one. Indications of what to do might come in different forms including feelings, dreams, signs, sudden change in events, ease/difficultly, contentment in heart, etc. Personally, I have never experienced dreams or major signs. Usually it is just peace and contentment and feeling in the heart that the decision I make would be best for me. It is sometimes confusing but one has to be patient and continue with the prayers.

Anyway, this subject has been discussed a lot before. Check the back pages of the forum.

Wasalaam.

Assalamualaikum,

Perhaps making salatul istakhara again may help? I know of an instance in which one made salatul istakhara, did not get a response, redid it a couple of times, and afterwards received a response..

acha, well hope that helps.

take care :o)

Asalam u Alaikum Wa RahamtuAllah,

Yeah i agree with Brother Asim that keep trying. My sister performed
salatul-Isthikhara recently and it had to do something with a city in Ohio , subhanAllah she saw it written everywhere. So it can be dreams , signs and a strong feeling etc.

assalam u alikum

Isthikhaara means seeking Allah's counsel .The prophet
(p.b.u.h) has taught us to seek Allah's counsel in all
matters.
The essence of Islam is 'submission' to the will of
Allah (swt),as taught to us by our beloved
prophet(p.b.u.h).The same essence hold good for all
aspects of our religion,including istikhaara.
To best understand the essence and basics of
isthikhara, try to ponder over the meaning of the text
of the prescribed dua,(in english).WE seek Allah's
help through his knowledge ,omnipotence ,magnificient
grace,in any matter we need to decide upon.
the prescribed method is to read two rakaths of nafl
prayer and then supplicate to Allah with the
prescribed dua.As to how we receive guidance,it may be
in the form of a dream,(not neccesarily),a strong
feeling towards one of the options,we may be
automatically driven towards the right thing
,sometimes we may not get any positve feeling towards
anything but we may end up deciding something
and as a result of istikhaara done with ikhlaas Allah
will bless us in whatever we have decided.
whoever seeks the counsel of the creator will not
regret it and whoever seeks the advice of the
believers (mashwara)will feel confident about his
decisions.
"AND CONSULT THEM IN THE AFFAIR ,THEN WHEN YOU HAVE
TAKEN A DECISION ,PUT YOUR TRUST IN ALLAH"(TRANSLATION
FROM A VERSE IN THE QURAAN)

hope this will be of some help, may Allah make things
easy for you ameen.
