I work in politics!!! and I plan to run for office one day!!!
(hand shaking has become a problem. It's very important to American
politics.)

Covering the head is going to have to be very strategic and a slow
change.

I need to know more about how to pray. I know the movements, but what
am I supposed to be thinking about or reciting in my head while I'm
praying?

As you can tell, I have much to learn.

The main problem is "I  work in politics!!! and I plan to run for office one day!". This is not good.

As salamu alaykum Sister,

Masha'Allah welcome to the family.  Insha'Allah everything will come with time.  Insha'Allah someone else can recommend a good website or video for praying.  Do you have a friend who might be able to help you?

As salamu alaykum

Assalamu Alaikum waRahmatullaHi waBarakatuHu,

Welcome to the family :)
While performing salah, it is very important to concentrate and focus your heart. Imagine that you are standing alone in front of the Almighty Creator, Allah-u Subhana Wata'ala and you are totally submitting yourself to Him, Alone. Try to clear your mind of everything else and try to focus your heart. May Allah-u Subhana Wata'ala help you.
For the movements and the sayings in salah, here is a good website that shows the movements of salah and also has audio of the sayings. http://www.islam.com/salat/salatfinal.html
Insha'Allah it will be of help.

If you would like to know how to concentrate on salah more, here is s/thing maybe u'd like to read.

A THOUGHT ON SALAAH

Ihya Uloom ad-Deen, al-Ghazali

It is related of Haatim bin Al-Asamm that he said in answer to a question about prayer:

"When the time for prayer is at hand, I make a proper ablution,
go to the spot where I intend to pray and
sit there until all my limbs and organs are in a collected state.

Then I stand up to perform my prayer,
facing the Ka'aba between my brows,
the bridge-over-Hell beneath my feet,
Paradise to my right and Hell to my left,
and the Angel of Death behind me,
thinking all the while that
this is my final prayer.

Then I stand between hope and fear."

"I carefully pronounce "Allahu Akbar!"

Then I recite the Qur'an harmoniously,
bow in humility and
prostrate myself submissively.
I then sit back on my left haunch,
spreading out the left foot,
raising my right foot on the toes.

I follow this with sincerity.

Then I wonder whether or not my prayer has been accepted."

Assalamualaikum wrt wbk,

*sigh*

I must say that I DISAGREE X infinity^82973483 with the statement about working in politics, and hoping to run for office one day as being "not good".

Islam has given every Muslim political responsibilities. A Muslim is required by his Iman - faith to be truly concerned with the affairs and problems of the ummah - community, helping and defending the meek and the weak, fighting tyranny and oppression, and etc.

When a Muslim remains quiet upon seeing all of these it means that he or she is not truly concerned with the affairs and problems of the ummah!

so, let's re-evaluate. Is it still "not good" to take part in politics? run for office?

PS: ...perhaps I should start a new thread on political responsibilities of a Muslim? Has that been discussed?

Assalamulaikum sister,

As you said there is a lot to learn, for all of us, but inshallah
coming onto this website will assist you in your search for knowledge.

I would recommend this site

http://www.ummah.org.uk/software/cyber/

and also that you check out your local bookstore for more books and
videos to assist you in looking for more information.  If it a problem to
find a bookstore then try www.soundvision.com where you can find books,
videoa and CD-ROMS on prayer.

I wish you all the best.  May Allah (SWT) guide us all and keep us on
the straight path. Ameen

salam,

i agree 200% with somaira.....

how can one say that it is not good for muslims to be in politics... if u say this, that means that you havent heard about whats happenign to muslims because of governments!!!

if many muslims can get into politics, then alhumdulilah, there would be more of an islamic saying in desicions of the gov't....

So ..

Say you become a city official.  Ideally, the mayor!

Next up is a referendum to build a bar right next to the only Masjid in town.

The majority of the people living in the neighborhood (who are college students because the neighborhood is adjacent to main campus) seem to support the referendum strongly ...

What do you do?

My point is not that being involved in politics for us Muslims is bad.  But things aren't as simple as some people may think ..

Muslims have limits.  When you work in politics, you have to put the constitution of your state (or State) as your first priority.  If you don't do that, you're not going to last too long.  If you do, then you're in an extremely dangerous zone as far as Islam and Kufr is concerned.

Just some food for thought ...

Wassalamu alaikum.

Good Answer- we struggle with this everyday. Arsalan's post reminded me of this:

Even something as simple as being involved as a Board Memeber of a school, there are activities we are involved in- banking, bonds, school dances, etc... that I have to vote on.

One year there were 2 Muslims and a wife of a Muslim on the board. The vote for the yearly finances came up and our three votes would make the difference- in regards to interest, bonds and other harram activities which are common place to institutions.(a few board members were abscent)

I sat there with baited breath- I couldn't wait to see the CEO's reaction as the Muslim would "take over."

Allah who Allum- one of them voted wrong... I could not believe it!

Dear anonymous,

It may seem like alot to learn but you take your time and check different sources, some have told me it became alot easier when they did it with other muslims (ex. the lady started to come to the mosque and listen to it with us over and over again)

Islamway.com has about how to do the prayer
convertstoislam.org has great collection of articles, etc and even video of how to do it
sultan.org has alot of info on islam too

And also welcome to this board, if you have any questions i am sure insha'Allah everyone will be happy to help, and you can email me privately if you like to ask anything.

I strongly agree with you Somaira! Only if we take our responsibilities we will change the society we live in! Step by step, persistant, but lasting....
