Salam,

A couple of days ago I was reading an article on the web about the  signs of the Day of the Judgement and one of the signs it mentioned was that of the Beast that would appear with the staff of Musa (as) and the seal of Solomon (as).

I had heard and read about the beast that would appear but this is the first time I have heard anything about it carrying a staff and seal..

So I am just wondering, can anyone provide me with ahadith about this beast..Has anyone read any ahadith that can confirm the above..

I am also interested in learning the significance of the seal of Solomon from an Islamic perspective..so far all the info I found about the seal, from the interent, is from Israelite sources..

And I'm just wondering, is this kind of questioning discouraged in Islam? I remember one time asking about the nature and the story of Harut and Marut and I was told that I should not focus on that kind of stuff...instead I should focus on more important things..

Surah an-Naml:
82. And when the word is fulfilled concerning them, We shall bring forth a beast of the earth to speak unto them because mankind had not faith in Our revelations.

From Bukhari:
Book 041, Number 7039:
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) having said: Hasten to do good deeds before six things happen: the rising of the sun from the west, the smoke, the Dajjal, the beast and (the death) of one of you or the general turmoil.

This ayyah and hadith appears to be the only authentic and acceptable prophecy of a beast being raised from the earth.

I have found mention of a 'hadith' that speaks to this beasts' having the ring of Solomon, AS, and the staff of Musa, AS, but no mention of any isnad, or its authenticity.  For fear of those sites misleading any vulnerable Muslims, I will not mention them, but know that they are there and while some seem harmless enough, I only have recently begun to recognize the importance of leaving certain aspects of the ghayb or Unseen in favor of strengthing our amal in following the din of al-Islam, for truly it is that preparation that supercedes the advantage of any knowledge of the future.

What I do find interesting is that there are far more mentions of the Shia literature with reference to, instead of a beast, Ali, RA, coming back with Solomons' items, May Allah SWT protect us from any and all fabrications.

There seems to be a discrepancy with regards to whether or not it is Solomon's staff, or Musa's staff in many reports of the beast, anyway, hope this helps.

I'd leave it alone without finding any reliable isnads, and without any declarations by scholars of Ahle-as Sunnah about the authenticity of the reports of a ring and staff among the possessions of the beast.

I too would appreciate if anyone else had anymore information regarding this if my assessment is incorrect.

Regards,

assalaamu alaikum

I found this as part of the answer to Question 2281 on www.islam-qa.com:

Sign 8: The appearance of the Beast

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "And when the Word (of torment) is fulfilled against them, We shall bring out from the earth a beast to them, which will speak to them because mankind believed not with certainty in our aayaat." [al-Naml 27:82]

Abu Hurayrah said: "The Messenger of Allaah said: 'There are three things which, once they happen, it will do a person no good to believe, if he believed not before, nor earned good (by performing deeds of righteousness) through his faith: the rising of the sun from the West, the Dajjaal, and the Beast of the earth.'" (Reported by Muslim, 2/195).

Abu Umaamah reported that the Prophet said: "The Beast will emerge, and it will mark all the people on their noses, and this mark will last, so that if a man buys a camel, and is asked who he bought it from, he will say, 'From the man with the mark on his nose.'" (Reported by Ahmad and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, no. 322).

According to some reports, when the Beast appears, it will mark the believers and the kaafirs. As for the believer, it will make his face shine brightly, as a sign of his faith, and as for the kaafir, it will mark his nose with a sign of his disbelief.

The Qur'aan tells us that the Beast will speak to people, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "And when the Word (of torment) is fulfilled against them, We shall bring out from the earth a beast to them, which will speak to them because mankind believed not with certainty in our aayaat." [al-Naml 27:82]. This kalaam may refer to actual speech, whereby the Beast will address people, which is supported by the reading of Ubayy ibn Ka'b (tunabbi'uhum, i.e., tell them), or it may convey the other meaning of the word kalaam, to wound, which is supported by the alternative reading (taklamuhum, i.e., mark them by cutting them) reported from Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him).

--------
There is also a chapter on the sign of the Beast in Ibn Kathir's Signs before the Day of Judgment published by Dar al-Taqwa, London. And i'm sure i've read the hadith about the rod and ring in there too. However, the checklist made for that book shows that the hadith that i read were graded weak.
