slm,

Safiya, if you look at the time stamp on your post and subtract it from 8:45 pm you'll get about 5 hour difference between US eastern time and london.

Hajree, as long as you have "Real Player" you should be able to click on the link and listen to it.

Urr, umm, I'm really sorry guys, we didn't really expect to start a half hour late, there must have been a gin in the transmitter :)  InshaAllah tomorrow, Wednesday, we'll be on again but at 9PM EST, and we'll try to be alittle more organized...by the way, thanks for the ideas ):(

So tune in tomorrow inshaAllah, if you can manage to stay up beyond 7PM ;) .  I think we'll be on for a while, at least a couple hours so for part we might play some Nasheed or "Life of the Last Prophet."  Did any of you hear the Public Service Announcement about Stereotyping, I love that thing :)  A special thank you to the kind Brits who stayed up past their bedtime,(unlike some people :) its good to know someone was listening :)

So please send me some ideas if possible inshaAllah....may Allah reward you.

slm,

I will tune in tonight insha'Allah, if someone like *cough* se7en *cough* doesn't throw me off track by saying the show will be called off :)

As for ideas..."Rebuilding the muslim community after 9/11" seems a very broad topic...maybe it would help, for organization sake,to break it down into sub-topics.For example :

1-What is our goal in rebuilding? Do we have a clear vision of what the community should look like? Are there lessons from 9/11 that could help us in conceptualizing our model community?

2-What are the some of the difficulties we're facing? What resources do we have and what are we lacking?

3-What's the action plan? What can be done nationally and, more importantly, locally to achieve that goal?

With #3 we need to come up with some concise and practical examples that anybody in the community can do with their respective skills and abilities. I do know that MSAs are very active but what about those who are no longer students? like employees and even stay at home moms :)

I think this is an excellent topic you guys chose, jazakum Allahu kheyran :)

salam

PS: BTW, what y'all discussed last night??

Bismillah and salam,

I tried but real player gave me a plugins missing sign. It doesn't do that normaly when i listen to audio lectures ,etc. What is up with that?

One topic i have been really trying to find more information about and finding nothing basically...is how to help people who were very affected. like laboogie mentioned her father, i know of a lady who had been in war and now she is always in panick attacks, many are paranoid, and a group of young men who were jumped in the street and one stabbed are shaken and spend most of the time inside now. What do we do when we don't have professionals to help them cope?

If the show goes online at 7pm EST , mmm that's like 4Am here, else it will be just after Fajr here, if the ISP doesn't act again. Dear bro's and sisters have you thought of recording it maybe so one can download it for those who wont be fortunate to listen to it live ? I'm thinking for those who are in Rwanda & Burundi ( that's like West of Kenya in Africa), yes some folks down there have heard of Jannah.org, there is a Yemen - Omani-Indian - Pakistani community  and they'll like to hear you all.

Again dear ones Jazak'Allah khayr.

slm,

Here are some topics i'd be intersted in:

-Unity and integration within the muslim community: A look at the sources of division(sectarianism, ethniticiy, immigrant vs US bred, born muslims vs convert) and possible remidies. Lessons can be drawn from the prophet's [saw] seerah as in the establishment of brotherhood between the mohaajereen and the ansar in madina.

-Da'wah : Finding creative and effective ways - such as Islamic radio/TV talk shows, exhibitions, hotlines as in the why-islam project, websites, and other similar approaches - to convey islam and muslim concerns and point of views to non-muslims.
Talk shows, in particular, can be used to promote Islamic books through book reviews.

-Islamic Philanthropy: Fulfilling islamic obligations of caring for the poor, weak, and needy through social projects that cater to all *irrespective* of religion, gender, and race. Possible projects include islamic free counseling services, clinics, refugee services, shelters, food distributions services such as meals on wheels, mentoring for at-risk youth, etc.

As Salamu Alaykum,

I listened to the show tonight, and you all are really well spoken.

Regarding the Sept.11 issue, why are we not discussing the prohibition against riba and the kind of business that was conducted in the WTC.  At the same time that we are denouncing the acts of those who flew the planes into the buildings, as it should be, would it be too insensitive or unproductive to also mention that riba is haram, and how it promotes injustice and oppression that leads people to make such places targets?  Several scholars have mentioned this fact, yet it is hardly taken up by people with the greatest opportunity to let others know about this.

Did the Muslims forget what was going on in that building? RIBA!! Don't get me wrong, I have made it no secret that I am not necessarily torn over the WTC events, but more so over what was being conducted there and how it has gone by undetested by Muslims.

Lets just take a look at one hadith on the matter:
narrated by Ibn Majah and Al Hakim on the authority of 'Ibn Mas'ud that the Prophet, SAWS, said:

There are seventy three different types of Riba, THE LEAST OF WHICH IS EQUIVALENT TO COMMITTING INCEST, and the worst of which is equivalent [in sin] to destroying the honor of a Muslim.

(disgustingly enough, some translations of this hadith have been recorded to say 'marrying one's own mother' instead of just 'incest')

I mean, wow!  How lax have Muslims gotten in considering riba the kind of crime that it really is, and how just like terrorism, it too is a crime against humanity.

Lets take the example of what if the WTC was actually a sky rise top to bottom filled with prostitution in each room.  And lets say that some wacko-fundamentalist-Christian decided to do the same thing, saying in a suicide letter that 'God told him to do it because it was such a disgusting place of crimes against God's law.'  How many people would have thought, ' Well, that's true' or ' They were the main source of crime in the neighborhood anyway.'  I mean people would have been distraught at the loss of life, and the guys network and all that might have been investigated and what not, but it would not have initiated such a public outcry against Christians, and there are most likely people who would have agreed with him, saying good riddance!  Look what happened in the Mid East with that guy who was strangling prostitutes with head scarves, people actually sypathized with him; I did not hear of anyone criticising that or making it a human rights issue.

I am not trying to say that two evils make a good, but lets stop ignoring what was going on in that building, and recognize that with the kind of crimes committed in that building were possibly what led to its destruction, and nothing happens in this world or universe without the decree of Allah SWT, good and bad.  We are told in the QUran that what comes to us of evil, is from ourselves, and we cannot say that there was no evil going on there, in fact some of the worst kind.

I mean, are the Muslims going to try and defend the Christians when Isa, alayhis salam, returns and begins killing pigs and breaking crosses?  Are we going to turn around and then demand that he, AS, respect their property(the crosses) and not bring harm upon ALlah SWT's creation(the pigs)? Are we going to demand that he, AS, compensate the Christians for breaking their crosses?  I know that it may appear like I am just trying to confuse the issue, or change the subject, but there is a relationship here between a place of riba being destroyed, by whatever means, and Muslims not taking the opportunity to warn the world about the kinds of practices that were normalized within that building that are haram and prohibited by Allah SWT.

I was going to call in, but I figured you guys are trying to put on a show to attract listeners from Muslim and non-Muslims, and it sounds like you may have helped that one guy who called in asking about which books to read.  Perhaps, some of you may not see any sense in what I just wrote, and perhaps an admin will seriously edit it, but I am not trying to be insensitive, or contrary, just trying to understand why non of the Riba issue ever comes up when discussing the WTC events, and how Allah SWT's wrath could have something to do with the decree for those events.

Regards,

Qamar Akbal Kaan

good people on the air.

I wasn't able to make it to the studio, unfortunately, but I called in to the latter half of the program.  About speaking too fast, I'm sorry.  InshaAllah I'll do better next time.  (And I don't want to hear any grief about the 'tone' of my voice from the mafia, ok :P)

To the sister in Tennessee who called in, jazaki Allah khayran!  I wasn't able to catch your name.. but if you're a lurker on the board, we'd *love* to have you as a member, inshaAllah :)

Brother QAK, we did not talk about riba because this was a daawa program, and we wanted to focus mostly on the basic, core teachings of Islam - ie, tawheed, submission to Allah, etc.  We left out *a lot* of important issues dealing with September 11th because we wanted to focus on these primary things first.

As for the time, we don't have a set time or day for this program.  InshaAllah we'll have one soon.  But until then, you're gonna have to deal with crazy announcements like this, though we'll try to post 'em up sooner inshaAllah :)

Sh Mokhtar's program comes on every Saturday from 2:30 - 3:30pm EST, and it is *excellent*.  Check it out inshaAllah :)

Sister Amal, Jazakiallahu khairan for your thoughtful ideas, subhanAllah, how long have you been living in the US...you seem know the problems we face as a community well :)  InshaAllah, I pray that we can build on the Global Community theme in future programs.

What we have here in the Madina is so badly needed out there in the real world:  a nice, peaceful place where young intelligent Muslims can get together to share knowledge, poetry, ideas and laughs.  For starters, I nominate Amal as our community leader :)

Ok, I have tons of thoughts about where to go next...inshaAllah I'll post more tonight.  But just so Anik doesn't kill me, here's a quick answer to some of your questions:

Window on Islam is on live in Albany, NY every Saturday from 2:30-3:30PM EST, and webcast simulataneously worldwide at this link:
http://www.wrpi.org/wrpi.ram (max 200 listeners)

This week Dr. Mukhtar Magraoui will be speaking on the topic of spirituality.  If you have any questions, please post them here anytime before or during the program, and my handy dandy assistant se7en will pass them along during the show...

As you may have noticed, things in radio don't always go as planned.  Lots of things change at a moments notice.  I spoke to Dr. Magraoui today, and looks like he won't be able to make it tomorrow, so again I apologize...we may just end up playing Life of the Last Prophet, or have a discussion.  (...and don't worry Amal, I didn't forget about your request :)

Hey Cara

hehe, you remind me of myself, cause i was a bit confused as well, but let me try to explain what i can to ya, so it can be a bit clearer :)

what has caught the jannah citizens' eyes is this talk show, where lightningatnite, se7en, laboogie, and many others attend...they talk about islam and i think the last two shows were about muslims after the september 11th incident and what muslims should to do and things like that, it's a pretty interesting show and the last show, we had some people call in, even our very own Amal here at jannah! ;)

now, how do you listen? it's really simple..well, wait, i take that back, it's really simple if you have realone player, if you don't, then it's a big hassle! you have to go to the realone site and download the thingy, but see the thing is...you have to pay monthly for this realone player thingy, but they have this 14 day trial, but you still have to give them your address and credit card number...i bugged this guy to find me a site that i could download it for free and i wouldn't have to give my personal information, and he found me one, but i don't know it! SORRY!!! but wait, if i gave it to you, it wouldn't have worked, because after i downloaded it, it didn't work, and i had to use his username and the poor guy had to give me his password too ;-D

so if i find that site or if anyone knows it, hopefully they will post it here for you...

BUT all this hassle is if you don't have realplayer, if you do have it, then all you should be do is just press that link lightningatnite put up in the thread and it should work for ya :)

now, what time do these wonderful talk shows happen? according to se7en, they have shows every saturday from, err, i don't know the timing, look above in these replies, it's in them :) and they also have shows periodically during the week and they will notify us a couple days earlier or that day even probably here in the Bebzi stand, so you gots to watch out for them :)

well, that was what i could help you out with! it's 1:30 am here, so i gots to catch some ZZZZ's :)

Take care and hope i clarified some of your confusion!

Asalamualaikum wa rahmatallahi wa barakatu :)
Bismillah,

Alhamdulillah, I've finally gotten a little time so I'll try to answer as many questions as possible:

____________________________________________

JannahRadio FAQ

1.)  What are you guys talking about!?!?!?!?  What is JannahRadio?

JannahRadio is a concept conceived of primarily by sister Hania, who dreamt about it one night.  It involves a weekly radio broadcast live on the air in Albany, New York, and world wide on the web.  The programs vary in length, depending on available airtime, and are hosted by se7en and laboogie :)

Seriously, the intention is to promote communication between the best and the brightest of our Ummah in the hopes of advancing the deen of Islam and building bridges across cultures, borders, and languages.

The program will act as a medium for the exchange of thoughts and ideas; a forum for advancing constructive and intelligent plans to restore Islam in our hearts and communities.  The hope is that by connecting our hearts, we will be able to overcome the monumental challenges that are facing our generation.

2.)  So, how do I listen?

Its easy, just tune in during one of the regularly scheduled broadcasts by clicking on this link:

http://www.wrpi.org/wrpi.ram

Try it out right now.  Do you hear anything?  If not, you either don't have the RealAudio player or are too cheap to buy a computer with speakers :)  To get the free RealOne player, click on this link(got that Hajree?) :):

https://trial.real.com/pt/order.html?ppath=rodnld120401a&language=EN&country=US&dc=115114113&src=020111r1choice_c1,011204r1trialdl

For more information on how to listen, hardware requirements, etc click:

http://www.wrpi.org/realaudio/index.html

3.)  What radio station is this?

Its WRPI Troy, 91.5 FM.  WRPI also has other good programs on as well.  Check out their Program Guide at:

http://www.wrpi.org/guide/index.html

I strongly recommend Democracy Now and Free Speech Radio News, which provide an alternative perspective of World News.

4.)  When is the next scheduled program?

InshaAllah, this Thursday, 1/17/2002, at 10:30PM EST, in other time zones:

Los Angelos:    7:30PM
London:          3:30AM
New Delhi:       9:00AM
Kuala Lampur:  11:30AM

It's entitled "Building a Global Muslim Community".  If you get a chance, please skim through Dr. Sulayman Nyang's article entitled "The Myth of Return & The Muslim Community" at:
http://www.as.ysu.edu/~islamst/sample2.htm  before the program.

5.)  How can I participate?

The best way is to not just listen, but get involved in the discussion.  You can call in, or I can call you, and patch you into the program.  Just message me your phone number and I'll call you(yes, even in Singapore!)  If you're feeling shy, just message me you're questions or comments and I'll bring them up.  Finally, try to read up about the issues beforehand.  I'll try to post relevant links when announcing the programs.

6.)  Why are you so unorganized?

Please accept my apologies :)  InshaAllah, if anyone out there(i.e. Sis. Amal) would like to help in planning upcoming programs, please let me know.  InshaAllah, if Allah Most Kind puts His Baraka in this, it may be beneficial.

Feel free to contact me at ahmadf79@yahoo.com if you have any questions.

Wassalam :)

I pray to Allah (swt) that this show is beneficial for the cause of Islam in this country, and educates both Muslims and non-Muslims about the Truth.  Insha Allah you guys can be an inspiration to other communities to start their own Islamic radio show, or at least to make more effort in the spreading this Deen of Allah (swt).

 Assalamu alaikum warahmatullah wa barakatuh,

The program was really great Jazakumullah kheir sis se7en,sis mona   bro LightningAtNite , sis Barr form singapore , bro khalid from england, bro arsalan from texas, bro iman and the rest were really awesome ...

I suppose to talk in the program but, i didn't know what is gone wrong. any way here it is my lil 2 cents

the brothers and sisters  who took part the discussion in the program mention alot points towarding getting a global muslim community but, my views are lil bit  different from the rest of the sisters and brothers (thougth i didnt'  listen the program almost half hours due to internet disconnetion)

when we talking about global muslim community is about connecting  our local community and make a link between other muslim  community around the WORLD.

in every where we divide the muslim community in 2 different kind of people

THE FIRST PEOPLE..

Poeple who try their best to be a real muslims and put ISLAM first in their daily life and aware the importance of brotherhood ..

THE SECOND PEOPLE

People who practise ISLAM partially and put culture or tribelism first  in their  daily life ..

in order to get our local community united and feel the sense of the brotherhood between themselves . we've solve 2 major problem

FIRST PROBELM

this problem is in the first group ,they know eveything and they are the ones who take the brotherhood messege to rest of the thier community  but, they dividing themselves into groups and alwasy looking for their differences instead of ignoring it.....

the only way we be out of this problem is to forget our differences and try to intiate a mutual respect between us and start a team work to achieve our common goals rather than our indivitual goals..

we cant' tell others about brotherhoods while we aren't show them a good example ...

 SECOND PROBLEM

this problem is betweent the 2 different categories of the people we mention above ...
the second category thinks that the first poeple make DEEN a very strick and they use DEEN to achieve their own indivitual interests and they dont want to listen to them even if they listen they want to fellow what they are heard from them ....coz, they always critise themselves and misunderstood between them..

the only way we can be out of this problem is to show them kind and respect and try to convince them that what we are telling to  them is only for their own benefit  and be patient for them coz, they dont' know the important of the brotherhood ...if we do this and show them our patience , they will listen us and they feel the important of the brotherhood and understand brotherhood between them and other muslim community around the world.

When we achieve this it is very easy to unite the tribal African muslim community lives in east africa and the latino muslim community lives somewhere in America , when their members meet a place like MADINAH COMMUNITY .

Wa alaikum salaam ....

Br Kashif said a while back that we tend to meet a lot of Muslims but rarely do we ever get to know them well and invite them round to dinner etc.

Obviously maintaining family ties is important but there has to be a role in maintaining and *strengthening* community ties as well. Like I said very big topic.

Nope bro, i wasn't managing a radio station, i just did a couple of shows on there. I think the idea of having an Islamic radio station - even if it is broadcasting intermittently,  but regularly - is something that should really be investigated. You can reach people via radio who may hardly have any other contact with Islam. Housewives, mothers with young kids, busy fathers, etc. You can just leave it on and listen to da'wah being given.

We've spent way too much money on masajid i think, and its time to think about spending the money on other resources for our communities. I can now get in my car and in 10 minutes, i can reach up to 15 masajid, yet not one Islamic school or other Muslim resource? With lots of du'aat now growing older and maturer and having their own jobs and their own money to spend now, we need to learn from the mistakes (albeit unwitting in many cases) that earlier generations of Muslims made in the West.
Now, where were you Mystic, Merimda, Bhaloo, Saleema, Cara ???  I am wondering why you chickened out ??? :)
Too many things on my mind right now.

But I am curious, what conclusions did everyone come up with after the radio show?  what benefit did you derive from it?  was there anything beneficial you got out of it?  if so what impact did that show have on your life, what changes are you going to make?

OK OK I promise, if you all want me to I shall call in next time. (and if I remember)

I may be quite an up front person and at times opinionated but sometimes I'm also shy. :)

It was really so good to hear some of the voices of those, whose posts I read.

Salam,

My friend's mom passed away Thursday :( ( may Allah shower her with mercy and grant her Jannah and ease the sorrow of her family)..I was at my friend's house Thursday night to 3azi.

But I did get home in time to catch the last part of the program..I heard br Arsalan and sr. Betul..Even though I only caught a bit of the program I thought the discussion was interesting. You all delved into some really important issues which are rarely discussed in public..

I don't know if I would have the guts to call in..I can see myself messing up.

Salam,
merimda

as salaamu alaykum,

This is a little late, but I just wanted to say jazakam Allahu khayran to all the listeners and participants on the program.. in particular sister Barr, brother Khalid, and brother Arsalan with their killer accents :)  I learned so much :)  And also sister Amal for her attempts to call in :)

Sister Mona and Brother Imran are both from the local community, and do a lot in terms of daawa mashaAllah.

InshaAllah before the next show we'll try to have some clearer announcements :)

Lightning and brother Imran are downstairs working on getting the tapes online as we speak :)  So inshaAllah they should be up soon :)

take care all..

wasalaamu alaykum :)

Salam :)

Ok Ok Hajree, you got me man :)  I know, its officially 3 hours late, but here's the RealAudio. :)

Barakallahu feekum for everyone who helped out with this.  MashaAllah, I've heard from some people who had listened and enjoyed the program.  Please forgive us for the many errors we've made.

Brother Kashif, you should definitely work on getting a program going out there in the UK, it will be very beneficial, inshaAllah...plus it'll mean brother Khaled doesn't have to stay up all night to share some of his wisdom on the air :)

Hanif, Explorer, I'm sorry I'm so unorganized.  One day I'll learn how to plan better :)

Cara, I'm so mad ):(  You were listening and you still didn't call!?!?  And Merimda, you too ???  Ok next time, don't be surprised if your phone mysteriously rings during the show... ;) :)

Here's the first program we aired last week, Rebuilding the Muslim Community...
