Listening to quran

As-salam-ualakum. I pray everyone is in Allah's grace and mercy.  Amen.  I was wondering about the proper ettiquete for listening to quran.  Specifically, how about listening to the quran over the internet(or tapes or CD's) while working.

I know you are supposed to pay full attention to quran so is it bad to have it playing while I am working and may not be able to pay full attention the whole time.  Is it better not to play Quran in that case, or is it still ok?  Just wondering since I don't mistakenly want to commit sins inshahallah.

Jazak allah khairun,

Wasalam,

AA and Welcome!

I asked the same question to my Imam once.  He said you should NOT do this, based on the ayat of the Quran that says :

"When the Quran is recited, listen to it attentively"

He also said listenign in a car is OK, because you can concentrate.

Asalamu Alykum,

SubhanAllah, I have just started tajweed classes with this wonderful sister who studied under some great scholars in syria and was given the Ijaza to teach students tajweed. And ofcourse we discussed the proper ettiquette for reading and listening to the Quran. One of our dilemas was that sometimes you are cleaning the house or something like that, while listening to the Quran... However, when one is reading or listening to the Quran one should contemplate on every word to the best of our ability. In other words , one can do other things however , keeping in mind that this is Allah(swt) word, its not just A book , its the Quran. I hope this helps.

Assalaamu alaikum,

I cannot concentrate on any work when there are distracting sounds. What I do is, whenver I take a break from work (which is every now and then :)), I listen to the Quran. It is very relaxing. Also, when I am not doing anything that requires my concentrate, I normally listen to the Quran.

Here is an excerpt from Islam-qa:
http://65.193.50.117/index.php?ln=eng&ds=qa&lv=browse&QR=14590&dgn=3

Likewise, listening to the Qur’aan is also mustahabb, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) listened to the recitation of Abu Moosa al-Ash’ari, and he said to him, “If only you could have seen me when I was listening to your recitation yesterday.” And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) to recite the Qur’aan to him. ‘Abd-Allaah said, “Should I recite it to you when it was revealed to you?” The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “I like to hear it from others.”

So your listening to the Qur’aan on CD, as you asked about, or from a tape recorder or on the radio or TV, comes under the same ruling (i.e., it is mustahabb), whether that is at home, in the car, on the bus  or in any other appropriate place. So long as you focus on it and do not listen to it whilst doing something else, you will be rewarded for listening. And Allaah knows best.

Wasalaam.
