Beyond the Eyebrows!

Hello everyone,

I was thinking about the "eyebrow plucking" threads that have appeared here, and it got me to wondering.  It's my understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong) that the "reasoning" behind this is that one shouldn't change what God has created.   If that's true, how far does it go in Islam?  I'm talking beyond the physical here.   Say for example, someone is really, really shy by nature, should she work  to change it, or accept herself as she is as this is the way God created her?  What about an angry person, or someone who feels depressed all the time?  Would it be permissable for someone to take anti-depressant drugs, or anti-anxiety medication?

Curious,

Sparrow

slm,

What's prohibited in islam is obsessing about one's appearance and trying to change it so as to fit someone else's idea of what's beautiful when Allah has told us in the Qur'an that He has created us in the most perfect form.

However, if there's a defect or an illness that threatens someone's health, physically or psychologically, than it's permissible to resort to whatever measures to remidy the problem.

The ultimate purpose of the share'ah (islamic law) is to safeguard the life, honor, property, and wellness of the human being in general. That's why in cases of dire need one is excused if in order to save himself he has to commit some prohibited act such as stealing food in a time of famine.

Perhaps the more knowledgeble brothers and sisters on this board would care to expound on this.

Wallahu A'lam

salaam

i just wanted to comment on the what about depression part of the question. i believe that part of the problem with depression is really just the need to work on aqueedah.. trusting in Allah (swt) and at the same time doing ur best to get things done. as for anti depressants it really depends on how serious the problem is. if some one is in desperate need for stability then there is no harm in antidepressants... but i feel that they should be seen as a last resort.
allahu alim,

ma salaam
