i have just started my periods and am confused.  The problem is there
are no women in my house, mum died when i was young and dad never
remarried.  My brother isn't married and i just dont know who to talk to.

I know i cant fast and pray when i'm on my periods, but what else can i
do and not???

I know my friends have a shower at the end of each period to purify
themselves, but i feel shy asking, so could any one tell me if there are
any shower duas

Also how do i get rid of stains on my clothes, i know some of my
questions are stuopid, but i really dont know.

can any1 reccommend any books, but on an islamic perspective.

Plz do respond, i have no one else to talk to, every tip will be
appreciated

As salamu alaykum Sister,

Maybe you could talk to one of your friends' moms.  In Fiqh us-Sunnah Part 1 there is a section about menstration and also how to perform ghusl, which is the shower that you must make when your period ends.  Al hamdu lillah after searching I finally found the link (yeah)
http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/law/fiqhussunnah/
Insha'Allah this should help you out.

Hi anonymous,

I'm not Muslim so I can't answer your ? about duas etc. but I can tell you NOT to wash the stain with warm water.  Use cold as soon as possible and it should do the trick.  Also, I have seen a wash in the drugstores designed specifically to remove stains of this nature.

Hope it helps,  :)

Hey sweetie. :) You are all grown up now. *blush*  <=====  that's you blushing. not me. hahha. just teasing you, i hope you don't mind. :) consider me your older sister.

ok so here it goes. First thing, wash your stained clothes with hot water. If your undergarments are white--then bleach it. If not, then uh throw it away--i guess.

Secondly, don't use tampons! They can be bad for you and since you just started your periods, it's better that you start out with pads. For night, get the ones that say on them "overnight pads." You will also notice that some of them have "wings," they protect your underwear from any leaks from the side. They are good to use if your periods are heavy.

Change your pads every 3 to 4 hours!!! Sometimes they can be bad for your health, (infections, etc) and plus you don't want to smell!!!!

Everytime you use the restroom, wash yourself!!! Trust me, it can get smelly if you don't. About showers--take a shower everyday even if you are on your periods. You won't be menstruating contantly, there will be breaks, small periods of time where you won't be menstruating, go take a quick shower!

Yes, at the end of the periods, you take a shower. Do ghusl, wudu and then take a shower. I don't know what more to tell you. Hope it helps.

Oh and how are you buying the pads? Do you drive? If not, maybe ask one of your close friends to provide you with some every month. And i don't think it's bad if you let your dad know that you need them. Of course it's embarassing, but your situation is understanble since your mom passed away.

Oh and this is very important too--always keep a pad with you, wherever you go!!! You may menstruate unexpectedly and trust me you don't want to be humiliated by red stains on your pants.

Oh and you may want to mark down when you have your periods, so you will know your cycle. When you go see the doctor, they ask you about that. Plus, you know when to expect them. :)

Take care

Dear sister, there's nothing stupid about your questions. We have to ask questions in order to learn.I'm glad that you came into this board to do so :)

About Ghusl (purification shower), this is what i've been taught:

1-Make the intention in your heart that you'll shower to purify yourself.

2-Wash the private parts.

4-Wash your hands and make wudu' as if you're going to pray. The sunnah here is to to leave the feet till the end of your shower.

5-Once under the shower , start washing your hair and then the right side of you body and then the left.Make sure that water reaches every spot in your body.

7-Finally, wash your feet ,again starting with the right and then the left.

As for what you can't do while menstruating, you can't fast, pray, touch the Qur'an or read it out load. However, you can touch translations of the Qur'an which have the arabic verses as well as commentary, either in arabic or english.

If you have any other questions that you're shy to ask on the board, please message me privately.

salam :)

i haven't got my period either. but i know still since theres many womern in the house here whom got theirs.
so buy pads where them, wash, and i read that if you wash your clothes with hot water it will stay but cold water will let it all run out. but for me both is one way so try any. how old r u anywayz? not 2 ge in2 the subject but this also matters by age. if you are younger than 12. just do it the easy way. i hope that you remember after you get your period FASTING PRAYING WEARING HIJAB AND ALL THAT BECOMES A MUST!
no not shouting just letting you know that it is important.
now i have told your part let me tell my part.

1. IS THERE A AGE RANGE WHERE YOU HAVE TO GET YOUR PERIOD?
2. when do u usually get ur period? (night, while sitting, sleeping etc...)
3. do you have 2 be healthy to get your period, if so what kind of healthiness?
plz answer my questions.

1. IS THERE A AGE RANGE WHERE YOU HAVE TO GET YOUR PERIOD?

*** I think the average is 11 to 15 but can be 9 or 10 and 16 or 17

2. when do u usually get ur period? (night, while sitting, sleeping etc...)
******** No specific time of day, it just happens and each month the time of day or night it starts is different. You may flow heavier with increased activity. Sometimes stress may make it a little late.

3. do you have 2 be healthy to get your period, if so what kind of healthiness?

***** If you're a woman, you'll get it eventually,  but I have read studies that girls with a higher % of body fat  ( and I don't mean obese) seem to get it earlier where skinny, athletic girls seem to get it later.  This I heard years ago so I am not sure if medical science have learned something new.

I have seen different posts about cold water vs hot. Hot water will a lot of times set the stain permant. Rinse the item in cold water as soon as possible. Cold water will rinse it out. Then you can wash/launder in hot water, but rinse in cold water first or you may make the stain set. Even with bleach it doesn't always come out if you don't rinse in cold water first.

My son growing up had many and sometimes bad nose bleeds, especially at night when he slept, if the sheets and/or pillow cases were washed in warm or hot water without rinsing in cold first  sometimes the stain stayed.

plz answer my questions.
SALAM!

Forgive me if this sounds presumptious to all you "experienced" ladies out there :)..but I thought I'd just add this in for those that have not experienced this as yet.

On the first day that you begin to menstruate, count 28 days from that date, and that is when your next periods are likely to start.

Some have them in intervals of 25 days too, so just keep track of the dates to see what sort of cycle you have.

Also, do not expect your mestruation to be regular or "normal" in the fisrt few months.  A lot of females experience irregular cycles and there usually is no need to panic...just yet.  Wait for your body to naturally settle down to a regular cycle.  :)

If it persists, then see your GP.

Your menstruation will last for anything from 3 days to 7 days.

______________________________________________________________________

I have a few questions for the ladies :)

- How old were YOU when you were told about menstruation
- Where did you first learn about it from?  (School, frineds, mom, aunts?)
- At what age do you think it is apropriate to mention this to our children?

I was told recently that girls as yound as 8 years old are starting to menstruate...has anyone else heard this as well?

but the younger generations are startin their periods real early:(and stats show that the younger generations are the least fitest (ie don get much exercise) but i dunno wat it is!

I think that girls are getting their periods younger because of all the steroids in meat.  Even if you buy Zabeha (spelling) meat if the farmer uses steriods to pump up the weight of the cattle etc then you are actually consuming much more than you need.  This causes girls to mature at a much faster rate.

If you can get your meat from an organic farmer that is truely the best choice (of course butchered appropriately:) )

And for a lot of females, that time to settle down into a cycle can take quite a while. It took me several years -- and then the regularity was once every 26-30 days.  It still hasn't gotten any more regular than that.  So don't worry.  Early on, anything goes!

I was 11 or 12 I think when my mom first handed me a few books aimed at girls about their development.  And then I waited ... and waited ... and waited ...  I was 15 when I finally got my first period, and the next to last in my class.  As for what age is appropriate to tell your children, I think it depends on the child and the child's friends/environment.  But in general, I would wait till 10 or 11 or so to tell my daughter, unless I feel she is getting fed something else from school or her friends, or unless she is showing signs of maturing early.  But with my genes ...

But I have also read that the average age is dropping to 10 or 11 or something like that.  I haven't heard of any 8 year olds, but I did read a case about a 9 year old.  And the sad thing is, at least to me, I haven't noticed any fast emotional maturity happining along with the faster physical maturity -- the body may be speeding up, but the brain keeps plodding along.  That makes it tougher on girls today, I think.

Peace,
Dawn

I was 7 years old, during my weekend Islamic Class, was the first time that I got to know smt about menses. But it's more about a fiqh thing, rather than biological as learnt in school (which is about4 years later).

I think 7 or 8 is a good age. Reason being, by 7, a child should have known how to do solat and maintain the 5 prayers already. Hence it is also imperative that she start to know the issues and rules behind haidh (menses), sinc eit is interlinked. As such, the child would be fully ready, with knowledge, not only in fiqh, but what her body is going through, emotionally and physically when she gets her haidh.

I can still remember, my teacher told me that when I first get my menses, say "Alhamdulillah", for I have reached adulthood, and this is a ni'mah (blessing) from Allah. And alhamdulillah, that was the first thing that I said (in my heart), well... after I got over the initial shock! :)

I can still remember the time, the date and the place :)

I got this forward from a sister who talked about haidh. Here it is:

what cant we do during the time?
- obviously we cant fast or make salah during our periods, [the salah doesnt
have to be made up for, but the fasts do!]
"Stop formal prayer when your menses begins. When it is finished, wash off
the blood from your body and return to formal prayer." [Bukhari]

- we cannot touch the quran, "…none can touch but those who are pure…"
(Al-Waqi’a 56:79) [there is some question about touching transalations which
i have not seen proof for] however it is permissible to recite the quran from
memory and make dua

Hadith of Bukhari and Muslim concerning the Eid prayer. Narrated Umm ‘Atiya
(RA):
"I heard Allah’s Messenger (SAW) that the unmarried virgins and the mature
girls and the menstruating women should come out and participate in the good
deeds as well as invocations of faithful believers but the menstruating women
should keep away from the Musalla - praying place [Salat (prayers)]. Someone
asked (Umm ‘Atiya) (surprisingly), "Do you say the menstruating women?" She
replied, "Doesn’t a menstruating woman attend ‘Arafat (Hajj) and such and
such (other deeds)?"

ofcourse we can do tasbih, dhikr, give sadaqah, do righteous deeds, and other
good things that are all forms of worship, and ofcourse duaa at all times
[being on does not mean that we r cutt off from worshipping Allah swt!] :-)

-we cannot have full sexual intercourse [scientists are now researching many
diseases that can arise beacuse of this], but then there are other types of
sexual activities you can do which im really not gonna go into!!! but there
is a hadith about rasulallah [saw] going to his wives when they were on there
periods and covering their pelvis with a cloth [cant remember the exact
hadith]

-it also does not mean that no-one can touch us, or that they will become
unclean, even the prophet [saw] used to lie down with his head on Aisha's
[RA] thighs/ lap, and would recite the Quraan in this position when she would
be on her period also It is related that 'A'isha said, "I used to comb the
head of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
while I was menstruating." [bukhari]

- a man cannot divorce you while u r on ur period [subhanallah! Allah is
all-knowing and fully understand the state of women during their time of the
month]

- while on hajj we can do everything other than tawaf and salah [if anyone
has evidence on taking the pill during this time than please let me know!]

ofcourse when the period is over [this can vary from 5-9 days for the
individual  we must tak an obligatory complete bath 'ghusl' before we can
start praying again. the method of ghusl is:
Fardh   Water in and out of the mouth in such a way that water reaches
everywhere. [gargle]
Water in and out of nostrils. [upto the soft bone i.e where it hurts]
       Water all over entire body.

Sunnah  Washing hands to wrist.
       Washing private parts.
       Niyyat (intention).
Perform Wudhu; second Wudhu after Ghusl is mustahab.
Water all over body from right to left three (3) times.

its better to make wudhu at the start of ghusl and then wash your whole body
statring with the right side, make sure the water reaches every part of your
body and no place remains dry including ur scalp [which means take off
earrings jewellery etc]
the ghusl we do after our period is the same as after sexual intercourse but
it is advisable to remove pubic and underarm hair at this time.

also please remember that it is natural to be a little moody! there is a
change in our physiological and physical statewhat cant we do during the time?

-I was told about haidh around 8 or 9 I think. Alhamdulillah I reached adulthood when I was 11, that's normal for me b/c all my aunts and cousins reached adulthood around the same age.

- I learned about it in school. I attended an Islamic middle school back in Turkey and we were taught about it in sixth grade.

-I think it's good to mention it when the child is in fourth or fifth grade b/c usually most of the girls reach adulthood soon after elementary or around then. It's so weird b/c the age that girls are reaching adulthood is decreasing. I remember my mom telling me of girls during her time and they got it when they were like 13, 14. I don't know if it's really happening, but that's what i think, SubhanAllah.

My cycle was regular during like the first year, but then for about three years it was irregular. The days in between would be between 15-20 days, and the number of days that I was *sick* would go up to like 8 or 9 days, Subhanallah. But now, Alhamdulillah it's better, even though it's still a little irregular.

Well, back to hwk again.

Barraa, try not to stress over getting it in public too! Don't worry about it, when you get your period, you'll feel it. Just make sure, if you're around that age, always carry a pad just in case. And you know how you always read about hose "embarassing moments" in Teen (don't read this magasine either..crap) of girls that when they stand up, all the guys are laughing cause her seat is all red? well..insha'allah it won't happen to you cause when it's your first time getting it, it won't be a load. (for me it wasn't, and I hope no one objects!) and believe me you'll feel it, just run to the bathroom, everyone will think you just had to go pee or something..and put a pad on..
..ok, I think this is enough, if I add anymore, I'll just be repeating stuff..everything seems to be covered. And anon, don't be embarassed to ask questions, this is the place where we get everything out. and as corny (but wise..) teachers always say.."no question is a stupid question"..

Relax- For most women, when your period starts- it is just a few drops of stain at first- more than enough time to notice and get a pad.

Yes- the first hour it is very light. Then it will begin to get heavier. I don't feel mine either- but my mood sure changes and I feel crampy!

I am pretty old and have never seen a girl with a red "splash."

Also by dressing properly- you have two layers of clothes- underwear and pants then a long shirt/jilbab to cover. It would take a lot of blood to get thru all of that!

Also you can wear a "light days" if that would make you feel more comfortable near the due date.

On the lighter side (no pun intended)- what do you call your "friend"?- With all the different cultures on this board- I bet this will be interesting!

Barraa, don't worry about your age.  Plenty of girls start later, just as plenty of girls start young.  I was 15, nearly 16 when I got mine, and my best friend in high school was 16.  If you are really worried about spotting, wear a panty liner like "Light Days", as Kathy recommended.

Then have a talk with your mom.

The day I first got mine my mom called all her friends- singing-
"She's a Woman now!"

It was the red in my face that I had to worry about!

Does anyone remember the days before stick ons- and the belts we had to wear?

how does this work. it starts and never stops pouring until the end of your period, or pours, stops for an hour or two then begins?
or what?

No pouring- Just drip drip drip... some girls get a gush once in awhile.
The cycle starts light, gets heavier, gets light again.
Just imagine a curve on a chart.
