slm,

I want to get a new cell phone. My current one has a bad reception, especially inside buildings. I have an account with sprint and i don't know if the problem is with their network or the model of the phone.

So...i need advise on buying a good cell phone and which company has the best network.I think in the US there are only two major companies : Verizon and Sprint.

And while we're on the subject can somebody please explain to me why in the US you're charged for incoming calls as well as outgoing ones??? that looks like plain rip off to me! In the middle east, and i think also in europe, you're only charged for outgoing call.

Assalaamu-alaikum Amal, and ALL mobile users.

Two young healthy bro's i know, all of a sudden, for no apparent reason, went down with Cancer recently. One is now seriously messed up, as in brain damaged, the other is also in a pretty bad way, with severe memory loss, and brain tumours.

Now why this happened all of a sudden to two healthy young men is not clear, but when i thought about it, something just hit me. I realised that both thse guys had recently been using mobiles a LOT. And that is the only thing i can link this sudden cancer to.

So all you people out thier with phones, take heed, they are a danger, and most people have no reason to be using them. A normal phone would do fine. Its main purpose is to operate as a fashion accessorie, but this can have life wrecking side affects. If you have a phone, only keep it for emergency purposes.

I also read that in the past 3 years thier has been a 400% increase in brain tumours amongst the young, and no doubt this is linked to the cell phones!

In my opinion, keep your phone, but charge it up, get credit on your phone, then swith it off, put it in your backpack, and leave it thier, only use it for emergencies.

Myself, i suffer the consequnes also, i used to use the ohone a lot a while back, and i started getting severe headaches, i mean REAL bad headaches, but before using the phones, i never used to get headaches! The first time i EVER used a mobile, my head was spinning, i had never experienced anything like it! After a few months , i just thought forget this, i dont wanna fry my brians no more!

Now i hardly ever use a phone!

slm,

Br. Mujaahid, Jazaka Allahu kheyran for the advice :)

I rarely use my cell phone. The only reason i got it is to appease my mother who gets worried a lot for my safety when outside the house. I think it makes sense for sisters to have one considering the societies we live in.

Also you might need it if something happens to your car in the middle of nowhere.

But yeah, i agree with you. It should be used only for necessities. I really can't understand people who talk extensively on the phone, especially while driving!

Sis Amal

Why don't you get a hands free set?

www.point.com
A great website covering everything you need to know about cell-phones.You can ever search the site for phones and plans available in your area.

Well, first decide which technology you want to use: Analog or Digital. What phone you get will be based on which technology you choose to work with.

Analog: If you will travel anywhere remote, even a dozen miles away
from a big city, get analog. Digital is new so calling ranges won't be
as extensive. Also, digital is a bit more finicky -- compares to FM
radio as analog compares to AM radio. Phones are a bit cheaper. And
there's only one analog -- very helpful if you want to switch companies a lot. The disadvange is that the sound isn't the best. With a really bad company or tricky location, it can get even worse.

Digital: It's advantage is that the sound is so much clearer and the
plans are usually cheaper since the phone companies want to push this
new technology. Disadvantages: Well, the coverage areas aren't as
extensive. And if you live in a city with lots of tall building and
hills, may the forces above help you. The phones are more expensive.
There are different frequencies of digital making switching companies
almost impossible -- well here in the US anyways.

Asalaamu-alaikum Hania!!

Hania according to sound research done by several independant research bodies, hands free kits in fact multip-ly the radion 300%! That is massive! They claim hands free kits are even worse!

Sis forget using mobiles, just send pigeons instead ;) At least THEY wont give you a headache or Cancer! AND they will eat your scraps!

I eman come on, people have, in recent years, become more complacent and lazy becuse of mobiles, as in people always turn up late for meetings, etc, and simply get on their phone and say, oo oo i may not be able to make it5, on time, i'm gona be late (which translates to "i'm watching TV"!).

Hania the risks have been well published. Is it really worth risking your health over a chat with a friend?

and

X Ring ring!! "Hello, this suit fits fine, but get me the next size, i wanna try that"

Y: Ok, i'll bring it into the fitting room, hey theirs a nice purple one here, shall i get that?"

X: No, it dont look nice in sunny weather, by the way we aint had sun around here for ages

Y: Yeah i know, aww shucks, after you got your suit we'll go to the holiday shop

X: Yeah, great idea, remember last year when we went to europe, remeber that store in spain we went to, great place

Y: oh yeah, i remeber, they had this luvly suit which i..

Shop assistant: "SHUT UP! YIP YAP!!! YIP YAP!! blah blah blah, cant you just come out the changing room and talk to your friend, thiers a massive queue of people waiting to try on thier cloths!"
That's seriously weird if you're charged for incoming calls
Wanna know what's even more weird? You can't exchange one service for another without throwing away the whole phone.Instead you're *forced* to buy a new one because each phone is custom made for the company offering the service...Can you say leeches?

err, there are some services out there where the first minute of incoming calls is free ;p i know, only the first min, but that's not that bad, if your friend needs to tell you one thingy really quickly, works out well :)

my service is Nextel...it's GOOD!!! you have service *almost* everywhere! i've been having problems with it though recently, but that's because of *my* phone, i think all the times i clumsily dropped it on the floor had an effect ;-D

but i'm being honest, it's a good deal and you do get excellent service...i have free weeknights starting at 8, usually other plans start at 9 and i have free weekends and i have 300 free minutes anytime...it's a good bargain sis...get it! heheheh

good luck and oh, as mujaahid said, cell phones *may* cause cancer, but just get those headset thingys where you can talk through the microphone thingy hanging on the earset, do you know what i'm talking about? just see the accessories with the phone, or if you get a Nokia phone, you'll get the earset with it...

Voicestream- they are horrible! *
Sprint PCS- that's all right ***
Cingular- that's all right as well ***
AT&T- that's pretty good ****
Nextel- excellent, *****

have fun cell phone searching! make sure you like your plan because most of them have year contracts and if you end it earlier, you have to pay extra money...so chose wisely :)

okee dokee! take care of yourself and do let us know what phone and service you got =)

In S'pore, we're charged for incoming alls as well (though lesser than outgoing). I think its fairer that way, as the mobile user has the benefits and convenience of being reached anywhere they are, and the terrestial line user, well, they pay as per normal. U don't have to top up as much if you use a public phone to call a mobile user, like in the UK. Just imagine the no. of coins you gotta slot in everytime. Drives me crazy! I'm always short of coins.

Besides, with the free minutes that you get... guess what? I only pay for my discounted monthly subsription fees only, last month :):):)

Hmmm...interesting....no comment eh? Is that on the advice of your lawyer?

So do I, AND i have loads of bottons on my phone. Also another thing, i have the internet on my phone, its a WAP phone. I also have a little cancer cell maker. AND its a tiny phone. Best of all i have no credit, which means i can't use it, hence those nastey Cancer Cell Makers cannot do their evil work!

Anyway even if i did have credit, i would still have to charge my phone as i aint done that in weeks.

Why is it that the batteries charge runs out so quickly?

i'll tell you why your battery dies fast- i have the same problem right now...

it's because you must have overcharged it, no one warned me about that...stupid old me used to charge it every night and i would leave it the whole night, and it would stay charging for about 7 hours! it's ridiculous...so now my phone dies terribly fast and it's quite annoying!

so yeah, that's probably where your problem lies...

and huh? i didn't get your lawyer joke/comment...try harder next time ;-D

ie- you guys don't know how to crack up jokes and of course we women wouldn't get them! hahah

and yeah, there are no instructions on when to charge it after you first charge it when you get it...my sister's phone actually tells her when her battery is charged, we need that on our phones...

but now i'll teach you- you need to charge your battery when the phone dies...not when it's halfway dead and btw, you should be able to get by with it being charged halfway or even 1/4 because you don't talk on the phone that much, remember, it causes cancer? ;)

Ehem...lemme just point out some very important points here.

1. Nokia is the one that is obsessed with smallness whereas Ericsson is always true to its fundamental design.

2.  Nokia's phone is easily available in Singapore for $0 when you subscribe to a line but a $0 Ericsson phone ? Nuff said.

3.  Ericsson started the lighted LCD first, Nokia followed.  Ericsson started the flap, Nokia followed.  Ericsson started the blue tooth technology with Sony, last reported in a paper, Nokia is understudying abt the bluetooth technology. In fact Ericsson T68 is the first phone with an in-built blue tooth technology.  Ericsson R386 is the first ever phone with all the WAP functions built in, Nokia ? Case point ? Ericsson LEADS and Nokia FOLLOWED. Tsk.

4.  Whenever a group of friends and I go to other countries, even to remote places, guess which phone can still get a reception and connection ? Samsung ? No. Motorola ? No. Nokia ? Nej. Ericsson ? Ja.

So, friends Romans and countrymen, ditch that Ericsson-wannabe Nokia and get the real Ericsson.

Thank you *bowing to the sounds of thunderous clapping*

it's like comparing a Jap car to a German car... gammy, full of gadgets that no one really needs, but no use whatsoever for the long haul..

slm,

I had cingular here in Alabama and it was alright, my phone was a bit crappy, (Motorolla Startac) but besides that, it was cool.  But if you even want to *step* outside of your home area, TURN OFF YOUR PHONE.  Their roaming charges are RIDICULOUS.  They even charge you if someone calls and you don't pick up!!!  But I think they stopped that now.  Anyways, I needed something with free nights and weekends.  Would you believe I used my phone for over 4000 minutes one month?!  But I used my hands free all the time.  Anyways, whoever you go to, try to find a nice salesperson.  Sometimes they'll hook you up.  For $29.99 I got 250 daytime minutes and free nights and weekends WITH long distance AND I didn't have to sign a contract.  That was phat :)

Ok...I have to go now, but good luck with your search :)

Take Care,
Wassalam,
