In the name of Allah The Merciful The Compassionate Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam)'s Journey to Taaif For nine years, since his declaration by Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) as a Nabi, Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) had been delivering the message of Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) in Makkah and making great efforts to guide and reform his community. Except a few persons who had either embraced Islam or who helped Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam), though not accepting Islam, all the rest in Makkah left no stone unturned in persecuting and making fun of Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) and His Sahabah. Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) uncle Aboo Taalib was one of those kindhearted people who helped Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam), in spite of his not accepting Islam. The following year, on the death of Aboo Taalib, the Quresh got a free hand in stopping people from accepting Islam and harming the Muslims. At Taaif, the second biggest town of Hijaaz, there lived Banoo Thaqeef - a clan strong in number. Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) left for Taaif in the hope of winning them over to Islam, thus saving the Muslims from the persecution of the Quresh and also establishing a base for the future propagation of Islam. On reaching Taaif Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) visited the three chiefs of the clan separately, and placed before each of them the message of Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) and called upon them to stand by his side. Instead of accepting Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) message, they refused even to listen to Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) and, not withstanding the famous Arab hospitality, each of them treated Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) most insultingly and rudely. They plainly told Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) that they did not like Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam)'s stay in their town. The prophet (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) had expected a polite, even a cordial treatment and due courtesy in conversation from them as they were the heads of the clan. But one of them said: "Hey, Allah has made you a prophet!" The other said with derision: "Could Allah not lay His hand on anyone else, other than you, to make him His Messenger?" The third one said: "I do not want to talk to you, for if you are in fact a prophet, then to oppose you is to invite trouble, and if you only pretend to be one, why should I talk with an imposter?" Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam), who was a rock of steadfastness did not lose heart over this treatment from the chiefs, and tried to approach the common people; but nobody would listen to Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam). Instead they asked Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) to clear off from their town and to wherever else he liked. When Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) realized that further efforts were of no use, he decided to leave the town. But they would not let him leave in peace, and set the street children after Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) to make fun of Him and to stone Him. Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) was so much pelted with stones that his Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) body along with his shoes was covered with blood. Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) left the town in this pitiable state. When Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) was far out of the town, and safe from the mischief mongers, Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) made Dua to Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) thus: "O my Allah! To whom I complain of my weakness and lack of resources and my being unimportant in the eyes of people. O Most Merciful of all those capable of showing mercy! You are the sustainer of the weak and you are my own Sustainer. To whom has you given control over my affairs? Not in the least do I care for anything except that I may have your protection for myself. I seek shelter in Your Light, the Light that illuminates all that is dark and which controls all affairs in this world as well as in the Akhirah. May it never be that. You may be angry or displeased with me. I must remove the cause of your displeasure till you are pleased. There is no strength nor power but through you." The Master of the universe was moved by this Dua and the Angel Jibraeel (Alaihi Salaam) appeared before Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) greeting with Assalaam o Alaikum and said: "Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) knows all that has passed between you and these people. He has deputed an Angel in charge of the mountains to be at your command." Saying this Jibraeel (Alaihi Salaam) presented the Angel before Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) and said: "I am at your service. If you wish, I can command the mountains overlooking this town on both sides to collide with each other, so that all the people between them would be crushed to death, or you may suggest any other punishment for them." The merciful and noble Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) said: "Even if these people do not accept Islam, I do hope from Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) that there will be persons from among their descendants who would worship Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) and serve His cause." Such was the conduct of our noble Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam), whom we claim to follow! We get so much irritated over a little trouble or mere abuse from somebody that we keep on torturing and taking our revenge throughout our lives in every possible manner. Is this proper for people who claim to follow the generous Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam)? Look. even after so much suffering at the hands of the Taaif mob, Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) neither curses them nor does He wish for any revenge, even when Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wassallam) has the full opportunity to do so. |
