I need all the suggestions that I can get

From what I have learned Iman is always in a constant state of change.  It is either growing in our hearts or decreasing, it is never in a steady state.  Just as we will never remain young; every second, day, month, and year our bodies grow older.

I have a major question because I have a major problem.  I need to soften my heart with Iman and the fear of Allah(SWT).  I feel like the majority of the time I live my life like a kaafir and I seem to constantly submit to my own desires.  I know that Islam is something that takes time, but I feel like I don't have time.  Everyday I am getting closer to the day in which I will leave this dunya.  I really need to improve my quality of life and truly begin living.  I need suggestions from anyone who has or hasn't been in this situation before.  Please give me suggestions, big or little (it is important to me).  Something that has helped you or somebody you know.  What can I do to begin living?
=-=-=-=-=-=             =-=-=-=-       -=-=-=-=           =-=-=-=-=-= I want the angle on my right shoulder to be overloaded with writing good deeds, Insha Allah.  I want the angle on my right to say to the angle on the left, "Come and help me write some of these good deeds, you have hardly written a thing since he truly submited to the will Allah."

AWW,

Haven't you already started on the road to recovery by posting the topic here ???. Its not easy as turning on the light switch and practice all the sunnas, pray all the nafl namaz's stop doing the evils, it takes time.

I would say the first and foremost is to start to pray the namaza's especially Isha and Fazr as they are the most taxing.

Keep your tongue either in the rememberence of Allah, recite the kalimah an Quran often. Talk less and when you talk, always have the fear and love of Allah in your heart. That way, insha-allah your tongue won't slip.

Remember your death, by reading the various duas and by visiting the graveyard.

Keep company with those that remind you of Allah and his prophet saws.

Keep a control of your eyesight, keep your gaze lowered when you find yourself in the presence of women.

Spend in charity. Spend on your family and those who are in difficulty

Eat food which is hallal and from good earnings.

Mediate on your life and say to yourself, every day that you are going to bring a change in yourlife and above all you want to become a friend of Allah.

Give Islamic dawah to others so the world can not give you its dawah.

*The  kitab Purification of the soul is excellent I would purchase that one, it certainly helps me and it will help you as well insha-allah.*

And above all make dua that the words above make a change in my life, your life and in everyones life.

When i feel like that, i try to do something which i know will give me a kickstart. Sometimes this means going to one of the big masajid in the city and spending a few hours there praying, reciting, etc.

Another thing is to read a book called "Purification of the Soul" which is a really inspiring book. Likewise another book you may like to read is "Paradise & Hell" by Dr Umar al-Ashqar.

Also, if hanging around with a kaafir is bringing your imaan down, then spend some time with Muslims in the week too. If its people who are active in your community then thats cool; but if there isn't anyone around except the old men in the masjid, then hang around with them, because the you are less prone to shaitaan's influence if you are with a group of Muslims.

This was a really cool post Bro Sadiq. Brother 'Father of Fathima' made some good suggestions mashallah. I like reading inspirational articles about other Muslims and they make me remember I'm a Muslim. Brother Ahmer posted a good link to articles about Muslims around the world: http://www.icna.org

Some are really inspirational.

Asalamu Alykum wa RahmatuAllah,

I think getting involved in muslim activities has helped me a lot and as you said that our heart goes in and out of Ghafla until a certain point is achieved and than we are just increasing in Iman, and that point is reachable!!! However, people like you and I have to constantly work to achieve that, one wrong move and we are back to the first step. But all we have to do is turn to Allah(swt) and just kill our nafs (inner self).. ~~~~~ Hanging out with people of Iman , who will uplift you and not bring your down is key as the bro's already made that clear. I literally feel when i hang out with sisters who are more dunyaly oriented your Imaan starts to go down. And ofcourse make Du'a!!!! Also every day think about death, especially before you go to sleep that truly humbles you down. OK inshaAllah khair to you :)

Assalamualaikum wr wb

May ALlah bless your efforts to increase your Iman, Amin.

Sometimes, when I find that my feet are travelling away from the right path I will sit down and take stock of my life thus far. I will examine all the hardships I have gone thru and how I manage to overcome them. Always I will realise that I have only managed to come this far thru the Love and Mercy of ALlah.  That usually humble me because then I realise how weak and powerless I am and how much I need to have ALlah in me, with me, around me.

Its hard to be a true Muslim 24/7 especially with all the influences around us but its important that we struggle to be a true Muslim 24/7. At the end of the day, its always important to make dua for we can only be successful in whatever we do if and only if ALlah bless us.

Wallahualam bissawab.

Remember Allah SWT likes those things which are done consistently!!  As urgent as the feelings may be to charge ahead with whole lists of things to do, remember that.

The most important thing is awareness of Allah SWT.  And awareness of Allah SWT is trying to break through in your perception by an impending sense of greater respect for Allah SWT in your utilization of 'time' you have left.

Here is an interesting hadith qudsi that may shed some light:

It is authentically reported on the authority of Abu Hurairah (ra ) that the Prophet (saas ) said: "Allah (swt ), Most Blessed, Most High, says: "The son of Adam wrongs Me: He curses time, though I am time: In My Hands are all things and I cause the night to follow the day." 2 In another narration, He (saas ) says: "Do not curse time, for verily, time is Allah (swt )."

My advice is try to be more aware of time for prayers.  I find that I am constantly looking to the next prayer on account of my setting out to measure the shadows, look at my previous days measurements or times, washing up, making any sunnah or nafillah, etc.  Remain steadfast in maintaining your wudu, and gaging the earliest time for the 5 prayers, for there is the greatest virtue in praying at the set, early times for prayer.  Doing this in and of itself will help your attitude, iman, and over all health, insha'Allah.

I go through feeling the brevity of life in this dunya relatively often, and feel the sins, known and unknown like a tornado around me, and it is that feeling that blasts me back into a conviction to return to the straight path.  Turn that feeling into a motivation and springboard to do better.

asalaamu alaikum bro Sadiq,

hey you raise an interesting topic and I was just thinking about that very issue today.  I have just moved away from my home town and started a new job in a new place. I'm staying in a motel until I can find a place and my whole life feels so unsettled.  In this state my imaan has been affected and like you I need to soften my heart again and regain that consciousness and fear of Allah SWT.

I guess this is a reminder for myself as much as it is for you.  I need to take time out from my day, away from all distractions and spend some time thinking about Allah and all the blessings I've been given.  I need to take the time to read the Quraan after Fajr or Asr salaat.  I need to find some good muslim brothers to hang out with in this area.

I make dua that Allah makes it easy for me and for you to get to the highest state of imaan.

wasalaam,
Ahmed

I was reading a book about purification of the soul and it talked about the 4 major things that disease a heart being Glances, Food, Ill Talk, and ill companionship. If these 4 things are controlled then it said the others should inshallah fall into place. ALLAH hu Alim. Assalaamu Alaykum wa rahmathullah

 Assalamu alaikum brother,

bro , this is a kind of life we live here in dunya and that shows that we're not perfect...The most important is to know which state we're. Masha'ALLAH if you figure out that you're in a bad state that is the half of the solution coz, some people don't ..

I get this problem early last year, thought i was praying but my Iman was decreasing then i start to read quran and morning du'as , evening du'as and start to fast each monday and thursday i try my best to pray with Jama'at in the mosque ....

The major question is how you will start ? i'll suggest to you to spent atleast 3 days in the mosque for ITIKAF or if you feel lonely in the mosque go with TABLIGH with 3 days coz, it is very important to change our current environment ...

The most important thing is rememeberance of greatness of ALLAH SWT....so, you 've to see all the creations and try to remember ALLAH when ever you see one HIS creations and keep asking yourself why ALLAH create this ?

After that try to main maintain that state after you get
I think i make it long ..

Wa alaikuma salaam

asalamau alaikum,

every response here is cool

Check this:

stop thinking with your private parts... don't gaze at women

Don't go to where haraam is committed

Watch some news and read up on some Palestine stuff, get real angry at what is being done to muslims, that helps me sometimes feel re-vigorated.

Try to stay around muslims.

Drop by a mosque.

Try to look like a muslim (i.e. facial hair) cause you'll feel like a big man and macho even (not in a prideful way, but in a duty-sense)

yeah.

Assalamu alaikum,
One thing I know works for me is getting into the habit of reading the Qur'an every day.  It's hard to get into any kind of habit, you have to force yourself at first, but once you do you'll really notice a difference I believe.  In addition to the words of the Qur'an and the meaning, I think that one of the things that affects you most is that you decide to have a special time for you and Allah alone, and you keep on feeling the effects throughout the day.

Usually I check out my friends and who i am 'hanging with!' (I feel so weird-using that term!)

For me- I find that the people around me affect my level of day to day Islamic life.
