looking at/talking to prospective partner before marriage ?

I need some clarification. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In islam, is it *recommended* to look at the woman(or man) before considering marriage or is it only *allowed* to do so ? or is it not allowed at all ?

I remember there is a hadith where Rasullulah SAW tells a sahabi to look at the prospective woman before marriage. I was told by someone that looking at the woman before marriage is allowed only in case if the woman has any 'aib' (physical defect/shortcomings). I don't think this is true.

In our society, it is not allowed for the partners to see(not even pics) until after nikah. Only the female members of the brother's side get to see the girl. Only 'see' not even talk. And the male members of the sister's side meet the brother. You can imagine how 'ultra-conservative' our society is.

I know many contemporary scholars also allow meeting of the prospective couple before considering marriage. Ofcourse, the meeting should be held in the presence of a woman's mehram and proper islamic adab should be followed. I came to know of this only from the message board. Does anyone know what the daleel for this ?

What's the correct opinion? I would be more interested in the opinion of 'hanafi' madhab.

Jazakallahu khair.

assalaamu alaykum

I had the same discussion with a knowledgeable brother I know and he said their was a hadith that Umar RA went as far as asking if he could see the sister's leg before getting married. ALLAH hu Alim but I will inshallah try and search out the hadith.
