Extreme sports

AWW,

Just wondered are there any bros out there who are into Outdoor Extreme sports, like climbing, felling, paintball, white water rafting, clay pigeon shooting, camping, mountenering, parachuting, absailing, pothoiling, skydiving, ice/glacier, climbing, snowboarding down steep terrains, bungee jumping from a plane, cliffhanging(from sis Barr) etc etc ?

I'm thinking of starting up a regular extreme sports activity up in the North. However, I'm wondering would any of the brothers/sisters ever go to one of these adventure outings ?

If you have been on one, would you go again if it had a slight touch of Islam in it, for example praying namaaz, eating on the floor, doing wuzu etc etc.

Let me know your thoughts....

Salaams

That's a great idea BroHanif, however I do think it would be quite hard to organize. But Insha'Allah everything will go well.
I've gone white water rafting before and it's so awesome, SubhanAllah. The adrenaline rush and the excitement is so great that when it's over it feels like you're still in the water. I've also gone camping many times before with my family. It's a great opportunity to bond with fellow Muslim bro's and sisters, Alhamdulillah.
It'd be even better with Islam in it b/c you're amongst the most beautiful creations of Allah (SWT) and there isn't a greater oppportunity to connect more with Allah (SWT).
If there's anythiing I can do to help, you can email me. Jaza Kallahu Khayr.

Wa Lakum as Salam,

Sure, I have partaken in many such events.  Free climbing in Colorado, canoeing in Canada, hiking in Mexican deserts, wilderness survival, ropes courses, trail hiking in Appalachia, among other things.  I agree with being able to really connect and get grounded when faced with the beauties of creation, and the wonders and signs of Allah SWT in nature.  One of the professions shared by many messengers and prophets, alayhis salam, was shepherding.  That kind of work put them all in a position to fully appreciate and observe how wonderful the design in nature by Allah SWT , and the mercy involved in simple things provided to humankind, like shelter, food, water, and companionship.

What do you mean by the 'North?'  I would be all about doing something like any of the above mentioned things with an Islamic intention.  I would be more than happy to also offer any help for such planning as I could as well.

I'm down. Blitz me- (email me).

Regards,

Qamar Akbal Kaan

The community out here in MD periodically gets together and does a paintball activity. We got about 40 people last time alhumdulillah. Paintball has to be the funnest and most productive sport I have ever played. Salaamz

Assalamu'alaikum :-)

Actually, when I read about Extreme Sports, I thought you're talking about skydiving, ice/glacier climbing, snowboarding down steep terrains, bungee jumping from a plane, cliffhanging *ahem* ;)

ALhamdulillah, yes, I would. I've been to some outings that you've mentioned, and I think it is a wonderful idea that you have. Also, these sort of outings are different and do sound more exciting, mashaAllah. And including universal Islamic values, like team building, sharing, trust etc etc etc, would give the "power" to such outings, inshaAllah. Probably, you might want to have debriefing sessions after your activity.

I remembered, back in 1995, 8 other sisters and I went up a mountain with 3 other brothers as our guides. Somehow, we got lost in the terrain, and we only returned a day later than as scheduled.

HOwever, we were telling ourselves, that no, we won't turn back, we'll just find out way up to the top, and only then, would we come down.

And it was at the summit of the mountain, that a brother gave us a tazkirah, saying how much we toiled and gave all that we've got to conquer the summit, but have we put as much effort to conquer our nafs, and would we give as much and sacrifice our time and energy for Islam. We felt how difficult it is, going through thick jungles and difficult and unfamiliar terrains, and for 2 whole days, we were totally lost, we don't know where we were and how we'll get rid in this state of loss. But yet, we moved on, praying that Allah would lead us the way, and alhamdulillah ALlah did. ANd just reflecting on our experience over the mountain, has given us a little sight of ALlah's majestic signs about ourselves and about Him.

And the ukhuwah built during that hike, was mashaAllah.

Anyways, well, enough about me. But yes, certainly do travel across Allah's land :-) . I think the brothers would love it, inshaAllah :)

Wassalam :-)

:::-_-:::

*sobs*

Those of you who have gone hiking in deserts or mountain climbing are extremely lucky..I am *dying* to do that one day..

I go camping every summer but that's basically it...When I was in Egypt three yrs ago I wanted to join one of those caravans where you get to ride a camel and go off into the desert. But my mom and aunt thought I was insane and wouldn't let me...

It would be cool if we organised a Madina Rihlah...

I have often dreamed, when I was young, of becoming a shepherdess...

Although it is not classified as extreme sport..One thing I would love to learn is archery..*sigh* maybe I will get the opportunity one day, insha-Allah..and insha-Allah I am hoping to buy me self a sword this year..

My family is completely uninterested in any such things, even camping they won't do. We do hike on occasion and picnic, but otherwise it's very boring. I think connecting with nature, with Allah's world would also be a nice way to put it into the context of Islam, I would sign up if I could get a ride there(my parents probably wouldn't take me if it were more than maybe 50 miles).

Actually, I went up to a local mountain(Big Bear) for a school trip back in six grade, it was cool, hiking, kayaking, telling stories in the dark around a fire, studying nature, it would be even better with the Islamic aspects.

I think I did try archery, but sucked. I don't think I even hit the target at all! My hands were kinda shaking.

about organizing, I think that working through the MSAs would probably be a great idea, and we could also use the masjid network. Anyone from Socal interested?

Salaams,

We went on an outdoor pursuits day last year from work. We split up into teams and each team had to do three shooting events ( archery, crossbow and air rifle shooting) and three driving events (chuckle-buggies, Honda pilots and quad bikes). It was absolutely brillant!

I think I enjoyed the driving events more than the shooting (although I was pretty good at the archery and crossbow). I could have stayed on the quad bikes all day and the chuckle-buggies definately lived up to their names (I couldn't stop laughing whilst I was in them!!).

I've also done some clay pigeon shooting, which was Ok, but I ended up with a whopping bruise on my shoulder from where the gun kept kicking back!

I'm not sure whether it's classed as an extreme sport or not, but I went up in a hot air balloon once and that was one of the most amazing experiences! I would definately recommend it, although it can be expensive.

Salaams,

ROCK CLIMBING is soooooooo cool. Except when you land, the harness gives you a horrible wedgie :)

Merimda mentioned archery. Definetly try it out sometime. It is so kewl. My dad goes hunting in the fall and winter...he has YET to take me...I've used his rifle a couple of times...the kick kills though

But, I'm realllyyyyy looking forward to paintball, our community here only organizes it for the brothas...don't know why though
