asalaamu alaikum, ok I was bored, so like, I just thought, why don't we have a poetry contest here? We could have open categories, or like every week, give a certain restriction that the poets have to work within (like a topic restriction, form restriction, meaning, etc.) I don't know whether compeition is better or just sharing is better, but I thought maybe competition would sort of boost some drive to express. I have long been a fan of poetry (although I am way too shy to share any of my *ahem* old stuff here ;)) and I have some background in Shakespearean poetry as well as some English and American poets. SO, I wouldn't mind being a judge, maybe we could have two more who judge and grade, like the olympics or something, or just pick some entries to share or something. Just something to do I guess, that everyone, no matter what your Islamic knowledge, can participate and even win. Do I got an idea or what? Anyone wanna participate? I want to have something for everyone, either this or a short story writing contest.  I posted here in this forumto get maximum exposure. Admin, moderators, is this cool? I wanna get an idea if this is like totally cheezy or if its ai-ight.  I am of the opinion that it would be fun. So, will it fly? aslamau alaikum. abdullah,.

Salam, I think poetry competitions have been tried a couple of times before..I'm not sure if any of them went anywhere.. I like the short story idea better.. but like princess I will read them.. I can't write..^_^

Salaam, I'd really like to be involved in this. I used to have some artistic talent in writing and it's pretty much dead since I don't utilize it, this is a perfect opportunity to get back into my so-so style. :)

slm Sorry for replying so late, but I'd like to take part if it's still on. (the poetry) ? I write poems every so often and sometimes it amazes me when I read them months later and think of the state of my mind when I wrote it. Poetry is a powerful medium for expressing thoughts, feelings and emotions. It helps me at times to get things in perspective.  Anyway, if you decide on short stories then I may have to back out since I don't really have time... Umm this was suggested before you know, in the shahadah bookstore and no one really took part... so don't be disappointed Br.Abdullah if it doesn't work out, but Insha Allah it will :) wasalaam eleanor

Here is my entry!! If you look carefully into the poem you will find a deep deep meaning that only an intellectual, artistic mind would appreciate :D Pure class. Salaams Mujaahid- is that the only poem you know man?! ;-D hehehhehehe! and abdullah- i actually like these cheesy/corny made up poems...less reading and more enjoyment...or atleast that's what i think... here i'll start... Mujaahid thinks he's cool But we all know, he's a fool! He uses the same poem all the time Shoot man, that poem's worth a dime! He's always getting into political debates which always end up in some sort of hate. whenever a reply is locked in the ummah thread We all know it's because of something mujaahid said!! [wlm] My Poem about my day (a few weeks ago) How are you doing? We are doing great! but last night I feel asleep really really late. I woke up to my baby big mouth Who was screaming so loud. I came out and found he was really awake I handed him a bottle and that was big mistake, he threw the bottle out it nearly landed on my head again he started yelling cuz he was still in bed Today I have a ton of things still to do and I need to write a 100 email to boot LOL I hope that this has amused you because not only is this poem corny its also very true! Assalamu alaikum The wierdest thing happened after I posted my "poem".  That night I dreamed that se7en posted after I did and rebuked me and Hajree for picking on brother Mujaahid in public.  It's so wierd! And I thought to myself (in the dream):" ok, I'm going to remove the post, I don't wanna make any waves. I knew se7en doesn't like me" or something like that. You like me don't you se7en??? :-) (that's supposed to be a big innocent smile) You aren't upset are you mujaahid? it's all in good humor :) salaam mariam

You've tried so hard to make this a *real* poetry contest, with at least (I'm sorry to say) decent poetry.  But look where it's gone...   it's all good though!  everyone's getting all their issues out in such creative and interesting ways :) [wlm]

slm I finally completed my poem for the competiton. I based it on a photograph. The photo is the 'Pulitzer prize' winning photo in 1994 during the Sudan famine. The picture depicts a famine stricken child crawling towards a food camp. The pictue shows a vulture waiting for the child to die so it can eat it. The scavenger watches the child’s demise When the child nears death the bird will rise And tuck into a meal, a mother had known As her beautiful boy, now skin and bone And here I sit in my furnished home Surrounded by people and never alone Blessed with food, water and a safe place to sleep Healthy and strong, showered with love so deep Yet with greed and envy I still hunger for more Never satisfied with the blessings at my door I have so much, yet my materialism does grow With an endless appetite, more is all I know I want a new computer, DVD and a mobile phone. I crave a better job, more money and a bigger home.
