salaamz,

I'm having REAL problems with the fajr prayer.  It's just not happening
for me lately.  I feel like it's my sins that are weighing me down.
does anyone know any good duas to recite to help one get up or anything
else at all?

In desperate need of help and duas

Salamu Alaikum!!

Anon- i feel ya man!!! i used to have the BIGGEST problem with waking up for fajr! my sisters would always come and wake me up and i would just usually yell sooooo loud at them and then go back to bed or i would just unplug the alarm clock...

ALHAMDULILLAH just recently, i got my act together, because it never really occured to me that i wasn't praying Fajr on time :O i used to pray when i woke up and i guess it became such a horrible practice, that i didn't realize how bad it really was..and i feel soo horrible for missing it all those times....

this is what i did: first, i made LOTS of dua'a to Allah to allow me to wake up for fajr on time...and then afterwards, before i went to bed, i made sure that i said Ayatul Kursi out loud because i read this thingy, it's somewhere here on this board also, that whoever reads Ayatul Kursi, shaitan won't harm them in the night or something of that sort...i don't really remember it, i have such horrible memory, it's really bad i can't even remember that thingy about Ayatul Kursi! :(

but anyway, i know what you're going through, just make sure you do lots of duaa to Allah to help you wake up and make your nea'a (intention) in the night before sleeping to wake up and then read Ayatul Kursi before you sleep and OH!!! *** also sleep early!! i used to go to bed soooo late, like at 3-4 am and there was no way i could wake up and pray...

so just sleep early, make duaa and put your trust in Allah...that's all you can really do...

and you know, after you start waking up, inshaAllah!, you'll feel soo good and you will start to wonder how you could have gone through the day without praying fajr on time! SubhanAllah, it's amazing..i really hope you can start waking up..if i did it, i KNOW for a fact you can! :)

okee, good luck with it all and oh, put on your alarm clock as well ;)

take care of yourself!

asalamu alaikum,

rats, I missed it today :( astag'ferlah...

try putting the alarm clock far away, so you have to get up for it...

sleep early

or even more effective,

don't sleep at all.

I used to have a bedtime: after fajr, but thats a messed up timetable and is not recommended at all. asalmu alaikum. abdullah,.

i posted a while back on the same problem - the only thing that works for me is a very loud alarm clock, and if u don't turn it off it keeps going for an hour !!!!

as bro Abdullah says don't put the alarm within arms reach of the bed or you'll end up turning it off, then rolling over and going back to sleep again.  put it somewhere where you have to get up outof bed to turn it off

also make du'a in your other salats that Allah swt helps u to defeat shaytaans whisperings and wake up for fajr

Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah -

I suggest the alarm-clock-in-the-bathroom method (only works if it’s loud and if your BR is connected to or very close to your bedroom).  Alhamdulillah, it works pretty well, considering, you’re already in the bathroom when you shut it off; can’t turn back!

Also, get to know others who are successful at waking up for fajr, well.  They’ll help you, insha’Allah, whether it’s verbal encouragement, calling you or just plain making you feel guilty.  Whatever works, hehe.  Lastly, as already well said, make sincere efforts and niyaa to get up to please Allah, and ask Allah to help you get up, EVERY MORNING.  Not just tomorrow or the next.  Make it a regular habit, since regular habits are even more important to keep, in terms of our ‘ibaadah.  Once you’ve made a regular habit of it, don’t let it go, since it’s kind of like working on developing your muscles and making them really strong, and then just stopping.  Wasted effort.  Or just working the same muscles in the same way.  You plateau or maybe go backwards.  Always push for higher goals.  Strong muscles won’t get you into Jannah; your regular deeds will though, insha’Allah.  Also, read the Qur’aan before going to bed, as it will iA be the last thing on your mind.  Even if it’s just an ayah.  The most unsettling bit of advice I once heard way back regarding fajr is: you would get up for an appointment, for work, to fly on schedule, but you wouldn't get up to meet Allah (swt)?  eee.

Remember the ahadith already mentioned, how our Rasul (saws) told his companions about shaytaan using his tricks to stop us, how happy shaytaan is when we don’t get up, how the angels record those who pray fajr and 'asr at their prescribed times.  The best deed is praying at the earliest time, and the most loved deeds are the regular ones, even if small.  May Allah make it easy for you and us all, aameen.

slm,

One thing that might help is having a glass of water by the bed and splashing your face with it first thing when you open your eyes :)

Or get someone else to splash water on your face.  Tell me THAT doesn’t work…hehe (thinking back to college dorm antics).

alsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Allah wa barakatuhu:-)

subhan Allah.....a lot of great suggestions have been made masha'Allah..

but regarding the feeling of sins weighing you down...one  thing to do is take a moment and look at things you could improve on in your life (with the intention to please Allah ta'ala of course)...it could even be the smallest of things that is holding you back..if you think about it and too many things come to mind, then pick one thing to improve on and work on that...or even make the effort to do a certain good deed everyday (ie. reading a small portion of the qur'an before bedtime - this totally makes a difference in my life)..it will make a difference insha'Allah and insha'Allah succeeding with one improvement will lead to another...alhamdulillah, we're human and we make mistakes, but we gotta look at them as obstacles in this life-long course....take one at a time...it's not like any of us can get to the peak of a mountain in one leap....each step  (putting energy and effort in) gets us closer to our goal of being better muslims, insha'Allah....insha'Allah u'll find that as you work on ur self,  acts of 'ibadah won't seem so hard to get to.;)

i remember a few yrs back when i was getting more into the deen ..i was trying to get a hold of all my salah's but was having a hard time ...i mentionned it to a (masha'Allah) wise sister and the advice she gave me was, to keep trying and eventually i would reach a point where making salah was a part of my being and a normal aspect of my everday life...alhamdulillah it really only takes effort, dua'  and trust in Allah ta'ala on our part and, the mercy of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala ...alhamdulillah for Islam:-) ..

i hope some of that may help you..if i've said anything wrong, it is from my ignorance and what is pure is from Allah 'azza wa jal

walsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Allah wa barakatuhu

ps..pls forgive me for the lack of punctuation;-D

Its pretty simple for me... drink lots of water before sleeping :) !
Also, try and get more sleep.  This would be the most natural way, and probably good for health too.  You shouldn't need a real loud alarm... if you do, it might be because you might not be sleeping enough...

I wonder how people woke up for fajr before alarm clocks were invented?!. LOL :D  I really need my alarm clock to scream at me in the morning to wake me up :)

Embarrasingly enough, sometimes I turn it off and go back to sleep, but my mother wakes me up after that.

Assalam u Alikum,
I was waiting for someone to mention this but I guess no one else has tried it.My Dada ji(paternal grandfather) told me about it. Before u go to bed, read the kalima "La Ilaha illallah ,Muhammadun Rasoolullah SAWS" three times and then say to yourself," YOURNAME ,please wake me up at DESIREDTIME". Alhamdulillah,it works for me and its wonderful. If u are done and tired of all other methods,u might wanna try this.Wallah u Alam.
Ma'asalam.

Just wanted to add, if you're one of the people who turn off the alarm and go back to sleep remember this:
if your husband/wife, father/mother, big brother, uncle/auntie called you early in the morning and requested you to get up, you'd get up immediately. So why is it that when Allah, our creator, calls us early in the morning we're so hestitant and too lazy to get up?

This guilt trip works for me every time :)

Reg & Mehak what interesting comments. They remind me of an article i read some time ago about scientists saying that the human body has its own clock and you can focus yourself to wake up at a specific time without the aid of a clock or anything.

If I'm not too sleepy, I can get up for fajr just by imagining me doing it and thinking about sleeping until that time, seeing the area around me lighten. I use an alarm just in case, though.
