Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

Not long to go now ;-)

Four weeks and counting for all those going!!
Insha Allah this week we will cover some references to Hajj within the Qu’ran and Sunnah but to start off with I want to tell you a story……

The story begins with a young boy who goes to Jummah one Friday. On this particular day the Imam talks about Hajj since the festival of Eid-ul-Adha is fast approaching. The boy sits completely transfixed and listens attentively to the story of the pilgrimage being related to him. Whilst in this state he hears the following:

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:

He who came to this House (Ka'ba) (with the intention of performing Pilgrimage), and neither spoke indecently nor did he act wickedly, would return (free from sin) as on the (very first day) his mother bore him.

‘Free from sin’ he thought as he walked back home from Jummah that day. ‘A clean slate’ he told his brother later on that afternoon. Indeed the boy was much taken aback by this prospect and was overwhelmed by the enormity of such a reward for such an act. From that very day, the boy aspired to the day he too would embark on the long journey, which would see him (God willing) returning home without sin.

The first House (of worship) appointed for men was that at Bakka full of blessing and of guidance for all kinds of beings:

In it are signs manifest; (for example) the Station of Abraham; whoever enters it attains security; pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah, those who can afford the journey; but if any deny faith Allah stands not in need of any of his creatures.

[3:96-97]

Bakka was the old name for the current city of Makkah and the portion in red is the commandment from Allah which makes Hajj obligatory for those who can afford it.

Behold! We gave the site to Abraham of the (Sacred) House (saying):

"Associate not any thing (in worship) with Me; and sanctify My House for those who compass it round or stand up or bow or prostrate themselves (therein in prayer).

"And proclaim the Pilgrimage among men: they will come to thee on foot and (mounted) on every kind of camel lean on account of journeys through deep and distant mountain highways;

"That they may witness the benefits (provided) for them and celebrate the name of Allah through the Days appointed over the cattle which He has provided for them (for sacrifice): then eat ye thereof and feed the distressed ones in want.

"Then let them complete the rites prescribed for them perform their vows and (again) circumambulate the Ancient House."

Such (is the Pilgrimage): whoever honors the sacred rites of Allah for him it is good in the sight of his Lord.

[22:26-30]

From the time of Ibrahim (as) till today, there have always been people who have performed the Pilgrimage in accordance with the above verses. A fact which always amazes me given that Makkah is lies in a valley and is in the middle of the desert!!

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger(may peace be upon him) as saying:

An Umra is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the next, and Hajj which is accepted will receive no other reward than Paradise.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet was asked, "Which is the best deed?"

He said, "To believe in Allah and His Apostle."

He was then asked, "Which is the next (in goodness)?"

He said, "To participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause."

He was then asked, "Which is the next?"

He said, "To perform Hajj-Mabrur."

Narrated 'Aisha:

(the mother of the faithful believers) I said, "O Allah's Apostle! We consider Jihad as the best deed."

The Prophet said,

"The best Jihad (for women) is Hajj Mabrur."

[Bukhari]

Aisha asked Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) whether jihad was incumbent on women, and he replied,

"Yes, jihad which does not include fighting is incumbent on them. It is the hajj and the umrah."

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:

There is no day when God sets free more servants from Hell than the Day of 'Arafa. He draws near, then praises them to the angels, saying: What do these want?

[Muslim]

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said,

'When the day of Arafah comes Allah descends to the lowest heaven and praises them to the angels saying,

"Look at my servants who have come to Me dishevelled, dusty and crying out from every deep valley. I call you to witness that I have forgiven them."

The angels say, "My Lord, so and so was suspected of sin, also so and so and such and such a woman."

He said that Allah Who is Great and Glorious, replied, "I have forgiven them."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "on day have more people been set free from Hell than on the day of Arafah."
