Arlington Cabdriver Claims $55 Million Powerball Prize

A self-employed Arlington cabdriver yesterday claimed the largest single Powerball lottery prize -- a $55.2 million jackpot -- for a ticket sold in the District. Ihsan Khan, 43, showed up at the lottery claim center with his winning ticket and his personal banker.

Khan, who is originally from Pakistan, was fasting in observance of Islam's holy month of Ramadan, and declined to speak to the media as cameras clicked his picture.

"He's a Muslim, so today is a big day for him," said Bob Hainey, spokesman for the D.C. Lottery and Charitable Games Control Board. "He said he will try to use the money for godly things."

For more than a week, lottery officials in the District and 21 states that participate in Powerball waited for the lucky person to reveal his or her identity and wishful game players rechecked their tickets for the winning numbers -- 2, 4, 6, 17, 25 and a Powerball number of 31.

Khan, who picked the numbers himself, said he has played them for six years, Hainey said.

"He was the only winner," Hainey said. "That makes him the largest single ticket winner."

The District had a $90 million lottery prize in December 1993, but it was shared by a District resident and a man who lived in Richmond. Khan decided to take the money in a lump-sum payment of $32.4 million before taxes, rather than in $2.2 million installments over 25 years.

Khan gave no explanation for why he took nine days to show up. He was accompanied by his financial adviser from Riggs Bank. Khan, who is married and has three sons, moved to the United States 22 years ago. He plans to use some of the money to travel to Pakistan in a couple of weeks.

Khan purchased his winning ticket at the Key Bridge Exxon on M Street NW in Georgetown. The owners of the gas station, Won and Eun Kim, will get about $100,000 for selling the jackpot ticket.

"This is a great day for the D.C. Lottery, because we want people to know that when they play, they can win in D.C.," said Jeanette A. Michael, the lottery's deputy director of operations. "And we want them to keep playing."

This post reminds me of that one where:

this bird is frozen in a field,
dying of heat loss,
a cow suddenly comes and dumps her waste on her,
the little bird now feels the warmth of the waste energising her life,
now that she is warm, she yearns to fly
however, as she is in waste she can't move,
minutes later a tomcat arrives,
seeing the bird in the situation
she removes the waste from the bird delicatley,
and kills the bird with one stroke.

In life there will be some situations that always turn out worse than the one b4. Someone always trying to get you down.

So make sukar for what you have today for you may not have it tomorrow.
