Translation of the Holy Qur'an

I have a question. I went to a bookstore a few weeks ago;
they had just gotten in 5 different translations of the Qur'an.  I took
one off the shelf and happened to read (if my memory is correct and it
may not be) Surrah 5 verse 57 which stated that Muslims should never be
friends with Christians or Jews.  The second translation had about the
same words.  The others said that Muslims should not be friends with
anyone that insulted or opposed Islam.  I did not write down any of the
translators' names, and when I went back the next week all copies were
gone.  I realize that the only way to understand any writing is to know
the language it was written in.  However, is there any guide in finding
a well done translation of the Qur'an?
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hi George,

The particular verses that you are quoting are translated a bit incorrectly.  The word "friend" in those verses means "protectors/allies/supporters/etc."

But then again, the *meaning* of the verse can be easily misconstrued without some explanation.  This is where it's important to read a translation of the Qur'an with commentary.  The literal translation does  not tell you the context, which is extremely important with the Qur'an, because it wasn't all revealed at once, but in stages, often responding to particular situations that the Muslims would face at the time of the Prophet (pbuh).

This does not, of course, mean that the Qur'an does not apply today.  It does.  But the verses still need to be understood in their context.

And Allah knows best.
